| #1RavingDorkJan 12, 2009 22:06:10 | I want to take my Reutech Protecta Revolver Shotgun (from Weapons Locker) and add the autofire module, collapsible, and variable ammunition gadgets (d20 Future). This way I can choose to use it as an automatic shotgun, or as a flamethrower (dragon shells, Weapons Locker) at will. Is there anything preventing me from doing this? It seems almost silly having an automatic revolver shotgun that can breath fire and be broken down into lego-sized parts. ![]() Also, is there a way for me to silence the thing? Can I get cold-loaded buckshot or something? ![]() When using my Dragon shells, is it possible for me to gain the benefits of fighting defensively (thereby gaining a free +2 bonus to Defense with no drawbacks)? ![]() The rules for shotguns say they suffer a -1 penalty to damage for each range increment of the attack. Does that mean I take a -1 penalty to damage for shooting the guy standing next to me? Or does he have to be at the extreme of the range for the penalty to apply (30 feet away for a shotgun with 30-foot range increment)? Help. ![]() |

Nope, nothing's preventing you from doing this. That's why we don't use Future. Also, is there a way for me to silence the thing? Can I get cold-loaded buckshot or something? Just use a silencer like everyone else. And by everyone else, I mean this guy. ![]() When using my Dragon shells, is it possible for me to gain the benefits of fighting defensively (thereby gaining a free +2 bonus to Defense with no drawbacks)? Huh? The rules for shotguns say they suffer a -1 penalty to damage for each range increment of the attack. Does that mean I take a -1 penalty to damage for shooting the guy standing next to me? Or does he have to be at the extreme of the range for the penalty to apply (30 feet away for a shotgun with 30-foot range increment)? The second one. |
| #3nodaishoJan 13, 2009 0:24:58 | A shotgun can have a suppressor on it, though I would hate to run flaming magnesium flakes through a suppressor. I guess it wouldn't be as bad as with a rifle, as the way the shotgun suppressor works is that it has a barrel extension inside with holes in it that the shot can't get through, so gas gets vented into the baffles, but shot doesn't. At least, that is how Tromix does the saiga suppressor. I need to get me one of those, if not the suppressor, at least the converted saiga. |
| #4RavingDorkJan 13, 2009 1:04:20 | Nope, nothing's preventing you from doing this. That's why we don't use Future. Shame. You're missing out. :P Just use a silencer like everyone else. And by everyone else, I mean this guy. The blood splatter on the wall is a nice touch. Huh? If I fire a dragon shell, there is no attack roll, just a Reflex save for half damage. I asked if I could attack with a dragon shell while fighting defensively, effectively getting a +2 to Defense with no drawbacks (can't penalize an attack that doens't occur). The second one. Thanks, that's good to know. DO you know where it says that in the rules? ![]() A shotgun can have a suppressor on it, though I would hate to run flaming magnesium flakes through a suppressor. I didn't plan to have a suppressor on it while firing the Dragon rounds. :P In any case, d20 Modern clearly states shotguns can't use suppressors. Is that an error? |

| #6tema69Jan 13, 2009 7:29:38 | Listen mate, you're gonna need to read up on the fighting defensively rules. It's melee only. And no, we're not missing out on anything by not using d20 Future, that book is broken and fubar. And whether or not shotguns can be silenced, I remember something about picking up a cat and sticking it on...* AFAIK, shotguns don't take silencers. I've seen websites selling shotgun suppressors (note the difference), but I'm not sure how/if/when they work. *...from the Postal games, IIRC? |
| #7nclancemanJan 13, 2009 8:54:35 | Thanks, that's good to know. DO you know where it says that in the rules? That part isn't stated outright, it's part of the definition of a range increment. Range Increment: Any attack at less than this distance is not penalized for range. However, each full range increment causes a cumulative –2 penalty on the attack roll. Ranged weapons have a maximum range of ten range increments, except for thrown weapons, which have a maximum range of five range increments. Thus, within the first range increment, you aren't penalized. Also, here's another rule you might be interested in: Buckshot: Standard load for shotguns, buckshot suffers a -2 penalty to damage per range increment rather than the standard -2 penalty to hit (minimum 1 point of damage). This rule supersedes the rule in the d20 Modern rulebook (see d20 Modern Roleplaying Game Chapter 4, Weapons, Ranged Weapons, Longarms) which penalizes damage in addition to penalizing the attack role. The rest of that document might be of some interest to you, come to think of it. Listen mate, you're gonna need to read up on the fighting defensively rules. It's melee only. Hey, go easy on him. We all forget rules sometimes. I remember the first time I GM'ed this game, I forgot that only one Action Point can be used on any one task at a time... |
| #8tema69Jan 13, 2009 11:31:28 | Alright, sorry, I guess I sounded too agressive there. |
| #9backstabbistJan 13, 2009 12:29:00 | mSRD does allow Fighting Defensively for Ranged Melee Attacks: .... Fighting Defensively: A character can choose to fight defensively while making a melee attack. If the character does so, he or she takes a –4 penalty on his or her attack in a round to gain a +2 dodge bonus to Defense in the same round. Ranged Attacks: ... Read it, Know it, Live it |
| #10tema69Jan 13, 2009 15:45:51 | Damn, I was pretty sure that Fightin' Defensively was melee only. I apologize for being rude, especially seeing how I was rude and mistaken. :P ...must've been confusing with Combat Expertise. |
| #11RavingDorkJan 13, 2009 17:22:57 | The rest of that document might be of some interest to you, come to think of it. What is that? Some kind of 3rd party document? We only use core stuff in our groups. Damn, I was pretty sure that Fightin' Defensively was melee only. I apologize for being rude, especially seeing how I was rude and mistaken. :P So...um...can I use fighting defensivly with my shotgun flamethrower? :P |
| #12nclancemanJan 13, 2009 17:54:48 | What is that? Some kind of 3rd party document? We only use core stuff in our groups. Technically yes, but it was written by Rich Redman, whose name graces the cover of the corebook... and probably some D&D books I never brought. I'd say it's close enough to be considered 'core material' but your mileage may vary. |
| #13nodaishoJan 14, 2009 18:03:47 | no Yes. You need custom ones, to avoid tearing out the baffles, but they exist. Tromix made one that never got full production, as far as I can tell. It had a barrel extension inside, with holes smaller than shot, so the gas could escape, but the shot couldn't. Sure, nobody uses a suppressor on a shotgun, but that doesn't mean they can't work, and you are talking a future game as well. |
| #14backstabbistJan 14, 2009 19:28:14 | Tromix made one that never got full production, as far as I can tell Consider the only manufacturer you named hasnt actually run production of any, and it really is the same basic plenum&baffle technogy of sound supression used for many many decades..... there is a reason nobody makes any. Plastic shotshell wads play merry havoc with the baffles/bleeds. The plastic is pushing outward unlike bullet slugs that dont have any intent to push on the side of the barrel very hard. As well as trying to keep any shot sized around T from PARTIALLY entering the baffles... shot column trafficjam presto-corko-KaBlooie. There is a reason ther are not made, and it is not because they cant find one set of circumstance and conditions that it will work.... its because of all the other situations where it fails with epic lawsuits |
| #15narukagamiJan 15, 2009 0:33:11 | What is that? Some kind of 3rd party document? We only use core stuff in our groups. Thats a shame, you're missing out on a LOT of the better material. |
| #16nodaishoJan 15, 2009 11:04:40 | Plastic shotshell wads play merry havoc with the baffles/bleeds. So clean out the plastic shavings after using it. As well as trying to keep any shot sized around T from PARTIALLY entering the baffles... shot column trafficjam presto-corko-KaBlooie. Have them not use shot smaller than a certain size. Alternately, I bet that there would be a way to design it with exits backwards, might do bad things to the recoil, but the shot would be going forward, where as the gas expands wherever it can. There is a reason ther are not made, and it is not because they cant find one set of circumstance and conditions that it will work.... its because of all the other situations where it fails with epic lawsuits Except that they are made, I hadn't heard of Hushpower previously, but now that I've looked them up, looks like they have actually made them, and aren't just scamming people out of their money. They are single-barrel and o/u guns, but Reflex in Finland makes shotgun suppressors as well. Apparently most guns need modification to fit, and with supersonic loads, the sonic boom is still unsafe for hearing. I guess that makes sense, considering that it would be like the crack from 9 9mm rounds when using 00 buck. Doesn't seem like a shotgun would lose too much effectiveness if you dropped the velocity down to subsonic, though. |
| #17lawdogJan 16, 2009 19:20:22 | They do exist. I have seen them at product shows, but not in practice yet. They were rather large. Here is a good youtube video of a shotgun with an integral silencer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB__xEwuM50 Thank you internet. |
| #18lord_of_the_ninth_02Jan 20, 2009 16:41:44 | Alternatively, you could load your shotgun with slugs and while a suitable suppressor might be hard to find there is no reason it wouldn't work (especially since shotgun slugs tend to be subsonic already). I would imagine (not having seen the movie), this is what Anton was doing. |
| #19backstabbistJan 20, 2009 17:19:26 | LoNinth ok, sure, that aint so bad to picture |
| #20johannixxJan 20, 2009 23:08:43 | Alternatively, you could load your shotgun with slugs and while a suitable suppressor might be hard to find there is no reason it wouldn't work (especially since shotgun slugs tend to be subsonic already). I would imagine (not having seen the movie), this is what Anton was doing. In the book, at least, he specifically mentions using birdshot at one point to reduce penetration of building materials. I've seen shotgun suppressors, but I've never seen them in action. They're generally big, bulky, and intended for breaching guns rather than true combat weapons. |
