I have been looking at the d20 Future starship information. The book says that a starship is limited to thrusters and one or two other types of engines. My qusetion is how many engines of one type can a starship have? To put it another way, how many ion engines can one ship have?

I don't have the book in front of me, but from what I remember about the rules, and what I've learned about the design philosophy behind them, I'm fairly certain that "officially" a ship can only have one engine of any given type.
For example, you can have thrusters and ion engines on a ship with 2 engine slots, but you can't have 3 fusion torches on a ship with 3 slots. Furthermore, I don't think that the movement rates from multiple engines stack, so even if you have a base move of 3,000' with thrusters granting +500' and ion engines granting +1,500', your base speed becomes 4,500' not 5,000' (but I could be wrong about that).
To put it another way; you can only have 1 ion engine on a starship.

Now like I said that's my memory of the "official" rules. If you are the GM, there's nothing to stop you from house-ruling that multiple engines of the same type can be added to a ship and that their movement rates can stack. just be prepared for some fast ships and get out some big maps.

It doesn't make any sense to stack engine rates. If they did all the afterburner type items would be useless.

So basically GM Houserule that ships built with the same engine model can travel with say four engines at 1/4, 1/2, and double their speed with the drawback of higher fuel consumption at the double speed meaning that 4 years supply is reduced to two I think...

Give me some ideas because I've been tinkering with this concept amongst other things of the core books...

I think that sounds pretty good to me... but like I said, I don't have the books with me, (they're at my brother's house) so I can't offer much more than I already have...
I guess I would say that if a ship has 3 engine slots you could fill them all with the same type of engine and get triple the speed for triple the fuel consumption...
I think fuel consuption is mentioned in the Traveller Science Chapter.

Siblings and the authorized/unauthorized swiping of ones books... I will take a refresher look at the core stuff tonight and maybe come up with a few houserules for my own campaign

Does anyone know of a site that I can ref in regards to gravity scales and what the highest level of gravity a human, natural or gene modded can handle cause I need to figure out the bonus ability modifiers for say a player who comes from say a two times Earth norm/etcetera... and height/weight modifiers...

remember you can always ref the rules online thru d20 MSRD.

on that note, ships have only one main propulsion system, and thrusters.
Example:
ION ENGINE (PL 6)
The ion engine generates power to break down molecules of a fuel material to create ions, and then expels them by means of a magnetic impeller. It doesn’t provide as effective a mass-thrust ratio as the fusion torch, but it’s more fuel efficient, and its exhaust is not nearly as dangerous. Ion engines don’t function in any kind of atmosphere, so most ships with this kind of power plant also come equipped with thrusters.

anytime one starts talking ship construction, it's a can of worms being opened.

Well it appears as though the link in my sig on Starship Engines and Traveler Science I did ages ago is broken, but that's my take on it. As far as I'm concerned it makes for a more interesting game to house-rule stacking of engine effects. As mentioned, this does require augmentation of the afterburner engines introduced in Future Tech, but that's not difficult.

If memory serves, my link addressed the fuel expenditure issue, and assigned "fuel points" to various engines based on number of encounters or distance travelled.

I started to look though the Future Tech source book and it mentions that additional engines can be built on the starship but they are bought seperately like an upgrade. It does not give how it effects the ship. You know, whether tactical speed is enhanced or not. Also, how is cruising speed determined?

Well like I said, "officially" I don't think multiple engines can stack their movement rates.

As for cruising speeds, the hard sci-fi and the fantasy sci-fi cruising speeds for each engine are listed in the Traveler Science chapter of D20 Future (I think).

The "Dark Horizons Universe" free on the RPGnow website had a couple new enigne types... Check them out since they are free PDF's
