Description: Standing at 6'2 and weighing in at 200 pounds, Eddie's natural agility remains unhindered by his size, allowing him to both keep up with much lighter athletes, as well as slug it out with bigger fighters. An incorrigible adrenaline junkie, Eddie has taken up both kickboxing and judo, parkour, rock climbing, urban exploration, and even worked as a movie stunt performer until what he refers to as "The Event". Eddie is quite gregarious and easygoing, but when things go wrong, however, Eddie's good humour is quickly buried under a taciturn demeanor worthy of the most grizzled hermit. His temper remains his Achilles heel. As long as things are running smoothly, he's friendly and personable, but once things take a turn for the worse, his anger threatens to overwhelm him. Now, Eddie is learning to channel his aggression to help him in his attempts to rid the world of what he considers a "demonic invasion".

Eddie's recollections of "The Event"
Sitting at a table in a roadside diner with two other men, Eddie talks about his first experience with shadow.
"It happened about five years ago, you remember that summer when several young people had gone missing? Well, I was out at the old abandoned Dixmont Insane Asylum just outside Pittsburgh doin' a little exploring. The place was scheduled for demolition, a large section of the facility had been gutted by a fire that officials are calling arson-related, but weren't giving any more details than that.
Anyway, while I was wandering through the empty halls of the main ward, I heard some strange noises, like something moving around upstairs from me. As I went upstairs my flashlight started flickering, and gave out completely just as I reached the top of the stairs. After tryin' to get the damn thing workin' again, I pulled out my lighter so I could at least see. This whole time I hadn't heard anything more, but I was starting to feel uneasy, like somethin' was watching me. Just as I got the thing lit, someone grabbed my arm! Reflexively, I just hit 'im with a left, and I guess I hit him pretty hard, 'coz he took a header down the stairs. I thought I'd hurt some guy who was just playing a prank, but when I got to the bottom of the stairs, there was nobody there. I decided it was time to leave, but as I got out into the hallway, I happened to look up as I passed by a moonlit window. It was the guy I'd hit before. He didn't look hurt, but he was on the ****in' ceiling, just starin' at me! I wanted to run, but I just couldn't make my legs move. That's when Bobby here busted in and shot the bastard right through the heart with a crossbow. Ya know, if you had told me an hour before that that vampires and **** like that were real, I would'a laughed at you for a fool. Now? I'm a firm believer in monsters, but I'm not scared of 'em... They're scared of me!"

Role: Eddie's role would be that of a front-line combatant in the fight against shadow. Not hesitant to get his hands dirty, Eddie will take on creatures of shadow any way he can, whether shooting them with silver bullets, or wrestling them off with his bare hands.

Description: William Riven, or Liam as he prefers to be called, at first glance appears to be an overweight twenty-something geek with an affinity for the color black. At 6'1" and 230 bls, Liam is both taller and heavier than average, though he moves with an unsettling grace that comes from years of the softer martial art of Aikido. His long brown hair is pulled back high on to back of his head, his goatee is cropped short, and his brown eyes sweep across the room from behind stylish black glasses. He wears a black dress shirt and a black tie, black tactical pants, and black boots, and sometimes forgets to remove his Radio Shack managerial name tag. Unlike most Shadow Chasers, and all of the Scoobies, Liam has managed his money well, making investments in such a way as to enable him to live much better than a mere Radio Shack store manager. When not at work or at his suburban thee-bedroom home, he always carries a well-made oversized black backpack with what appears to be a compound bow lovingly strapped to one side, and it's quiver of arrows strapped to the other. He usually is either reading some graphic novel, or listening to some fringe podcast on his iPhone, soemtimes both, though usually at a low enough volume to hear his surroundings. He keeps his longsword strapped into the "gun rack" on the back window of his black minivan, which from the scrapes and dents has seen better days, and worse ones.

The Event as posted two years ago on Liam's Blog:
The last twenty-four hours have been the weirdest of my life. Two night ago, the 15th, was just like any other Friday night. Close the store, vacuum, count the drawers, lock up, take the bus home. At least, until the last bit. So, I was waiting at the bus stop, last bus of the night, jamming to some Jonathan Coulton, I think it was Re: Your Brains, but whatever. So, I was just standing there, when I hear a shout from across the street, over in the park. So, I look up, and just catch a glimpse of some kicking legs at the edge of one of the lamps before disappearing into the darkness. So, I have to make a split second decision. Do I stay here, turn up JoCo and go home, or do I go over and check things out, possibly missing my bus? Get home cheaply and quickly, or be a hero?
No question.
So, I ran across the street, and into the park. Don't let my size deceive you, like Gimli, I make an excellent sprinter, very dangerous over short distances. So, I make it over to the edge of the light, then pause. Light, I need light. I then smack my forehead, and reach into my pocket, extracting my iPod. It might not be the best flashlight, but anythings better than nothing. So, I follow the drag marks into the brush, the blue glow of the iPod lightning my way. Then, from maybe twenty feet ahead, I hear another scream, so I shout "Hey! Let them go!" Not knowing if it was a guy or a gal, and not wanting to get things wrong, I went for the gender-neutral pronoun. Another scream, and now a loud growl answer. Well, in for a penny, in for a pound.
I rush the shout, and see a woman, about my age, athletic, flailing and fighting with this monster. Only word for it. I've seen Buffy and Angel, Special Unit 2 (great show, too bad it was cancelled so early) and X-Files, so monsters aren't alien to me, but that's on TV, not in real life. But, the aforementioned pound, so, I grab her, and quoting the good Doctor, say one thing, "Run."
So, the two of us, in the shaky light of my iPod, and now running through the brush, and then through the park, and then across the street, not even taking the time to look behind us. She slows me down a bit, but not enough, and luckily, not enough to miss the bus, which we catch just barely.
So, we're catching out breath in the back of the bus, the one old lady leering at her nearly scandalous ripped shirt, when I break the ice. "The name's William, but you can call me Liam."
"Becka, Rebecka. And thanks," she replies.
I pull off my shirt, though luckily I always wear an undershirt, this one was my Cthulhu For President (Why Vote for a Lesser Evil) t-shirt, and offered my shirt to her, asking, "What was that thing?"
She took it, "Thanks. You wouldn't believe me."
"Try me," I said, helping her into the oversized shirt. She looked good in it, too.
"Werewolf."
I paused. Well, it made sense. Humanoid, claws, hairy. Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck. "Okay, so, what were you doing being assaulted by a werewolf?"
She looked at me, "Seriously, you believe me? I say it's a werewolf, and you just take it in stride?"
I smirked, "Best friend in middle school was convinced he was a witch, myths have to come from somewhere, and the duck axiom."
She chuckled, "Duck axiom?"
"If it looks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck, then it's probably a duck."
"Oh, well, in that case, you got a cell phone I can borrow?"
"Sure," I said, reaching into my pants pocket, "What 'cha need it for?"
"Oh, just some friends I'd like you to meet."
And, well, I met them. There were four of them. Becka, Joel, Sidney, and Bob. Called themselves the Scooby Gang. After telling me a few of their stories, I didn't need to ask why.

Role: Liam fills three roles in the Scoobies. He's the group's resident hacker and computer expert, as well as a passible hand-to-hand combatant, though he prefers to have Sidney shoot whatever monster they find before he has to go toe-to-toe. He's also the only one with a good paying job, so he owns their base of operations, a three-bedroom house in suburbia, and the Mystery Machine (license plate "MREMHN"), a black '07 Dodge Caravan with Roswell Alien Antenna bobber, though he rarely drives.

Transcript of June 5th, 2004 session with Patient Rebecka Simms.
Doctor Alms: Okay Becka, why don't you tell me why you're here today?
Rebecka Simms: I'm going crazy Doc. I've got to be going crazy. No way can this sh–t be real.
DA: Breathe Becka, breathe. Now, take it slowly. Start at the beginning.
RS: Okay Doc. The beginning. Well. That'd have to be last month, the 13th.
DA: The day your fellow EMT died, right?
RS: Yeah, the day that Richard died. It was a normal day, just like any other. Couple of calls, but nothing major, then we get this call. Big fight down at the skate park. By the time we roll up, there's probably like half a dozen cops there, and twice as many punks cuffed to the fence, but there's these two on the ground.
DA: They're injured?
RS: Yeah, blood everywhere. Rich and I, we run over, check them out. They're both alive, but barely, so we rush to get them into the rig so we can get them to the hospital.
DA: Tell me about them.
RS: Well, they were little guys, maybe four feet tall, scrawny, but looked like class A gang bangers, must have picked a fight with the skaters, must have lost too. Knife wounds mostly, plus just bludgeoning damage from a skateboard or something. So, we get them both into the rig, they're out cold. I'm driving, and Richard's in the back, keeping them alive until we get to the hospital.
DA: And that's when it happened?
RS: Yeah Doc, that's when it happened. One of them woke up, starts freaking out, screaming in some weird language. Hell if I know what it was, I've heard dozens of people freaking out in some other language, but never did I hear this one. So, Richard tries to calm him down, so he doesn't hurt himself, or Richard, but the punk keeps screaming, and flailing about. Real nasty. And then, well, then he ripped open Richard's neck. Just like that. One minute Richard's trying to get the punk to calm down, the next he's gurgling through a hole in his throat.
DA: The autopsy found it was a knife wound.
RS: Knife wound my a–s! I've seen plenty of knife wounds. These were like claws. So, now, I've got three patients in the back, and I'm alone in the cab, so I step on it, try to get there before any of them die.
DA: You didn't make it.
RS: No, I didn't make it. (Patient begins to cry) I couldn't save him. And then, once we get there, the punk jumps out the back and runs away. He kills Richard, then runs away once we're at the hospital.
DA: It's alright Becka, just let it out.
RS: He's dead, and I couldn't do anything about it. I'm an EMT, and I couldn't save him even though he was in the ambulance. (Patient continues to cry)

Role Becka is first and foremost the Scoobies' Medic, though her proficiency with vehicles is a close second. When in the field, and they can set up an ambush, she acts as Sidney's spotter.

Description: Sidney is one bad-a-s black woman. A lifelong hunter and karate student, Sidney enlisted in the Marines after 9/11, feeling it was her patriotic duty as an American. At 5'9" and 150 lbs, she was quite capable as a Marine, and eventually qualified as a Scout-Sniper, going deep into the mountains of Afghanistan. She didn't re-enlist. Now she's not sure if she's still stuck in that war, or if she's in the middle of one even worse, but she stands by her adopted fire team, the Scooby Gang. She normally wears her black hair cut short. Sidney's standard outfit consists of urban MARPAT fatigues, urban MARPAT mesh vest with civilian versions of her standard Marine web-gear, and an undercover vest. She carries around a long aluminum travel case, her rifle and it's gear, including an EO scope and EO binoculars for Becka to use while acting as Sidney's spotter. She rooms with Sidney at Liam's house, and spend her time either practicing at the range, or playing SOCOM with Bob and Joel.

Sidney's Recollection of The Event to Becka and Joel:
It was January of '02, and we were deep in the mountains of Afghanistan, hunting for Bin Laden, the Saudi scum. It may be a desert, but it gets cold up in those mountains, and so we were hunkered down in a cave for the night. Unfortunately, it wasn't uninhabited. During the night, I'm not sure when, but the camp was attacked. It got the Sergeant first, he was on watch, then came after the rest of us. I woke up from the screams and reacted fast enough to kill it before it got me, but I couldn't spare the rest of my squad. We were destroyed, and the killer was a massive beast, probably twelve feet tall, and I'm not sh-ting you, it looked like a Yeti. I couldn't tell Command that we were attacked by a Yeti, so officially, it was a Taliban ambush, and I scarred them away before they could **** and kill me. A Yeti, had to be, but how could it be? I didn't re-enlist, they wouldn't let me, PTSD they said. That's how I found you guys. But I've got one question. Why the Scooby Gang? There's just the two of you?

Role: Sidney's role is the sniper, pure and simple, though she can take care of herself, and the rest of the Scoobies. After Bob and Liam joined, her skills with a rifle outweighed her skills in melee, but she's still had to go toe-to-toe to save herself, Becka, or Joel.

Description: Joel is a middle-aged man, about forty-three, but looks far older, the stress of his life prematurely greying his hair and wrinkling his face, the cigarettes and booze didn't help much either. He wears a sharp, if lightly worn, pin-stripe business suit under his wool overcoat, and has a stuffed laptop bag slung over his shoulder. He moves like a boxer, and although not very buff, he goes to the gym every day to work out and practice, though he rarely goes into hand-to-hand combat, he knows his limits.

The Event as told to Becka:
You're young, and although it's sad what happened to your friend, the forces of Darkness are all around you. I'm guessing what attacked Richard was some sort of Goblyn, an uneasy spirt of malice and fear. They had them in the old country, Czechoslovakia, though I guess it's just the Czech Republic now. I was out hiking with my cousins, beautiful girls, which is probably why the Goblyn attacked us. Though this one was much bigger than you described, there must have been more hate back behind the Iron Curtain than in that Skate Park. It was seven or eight feet tall, and at first, we though it was just a fellow hiker, perhaps a soldier. But as we got closer, or more accurately, as it got closer, we realized that it was no mere mortal. It was a mean and spiteful spirt, and it was coming to take my cousins. I had to do something, and since I was still in University, still full of myself, I decided to fight it. That was the worst decision of my life. I woke up a few hours later, and Mila and Zophie were gone. I followed the tracks of the Goblyn, but by nightfall I still hadn't found them. Two weeks later they were found, beaten and dead, in Poland. So that's why I called you. You've seen what's really out there, the creatures of Darkness. And the two of us, we can fight them. Here, let me show you some of the other creatures of the Darkness I've found. I've got pictures.

Role: Joel is the Giles for the Scoobies, though he's more than just that. He's got connections, both in and out of Shadow, and can read practically anything. Until Liam showed up he was the Scoobies' main source of information on Shadow, now he and Liam shares that duty, with Liam taking the online research, and Joel hitting the library. He's smart enough to stay out of combat, though he can usually end it quick enough if he's forced into it.

He was good, but not good enough to go to the next level, though some of his old teammates said it was because he freaked out in the game against Miskatonic. Bob's six feet tall, an inch shorter than Liam, though most of his two-hundred pounds is muscle. He met Joel at his Gym, and after befriending the older reporter, eventually joined the Scoobies, about six months before Liam. He shares a room at Liam's with Joel, and the two men share a passion for boxing, as well as a growing skill on Joel's part at video games. Bob usually, like his manager at the Radio Shack Liam, he's the assistant manager, wears his work uniform, though on his days off he wears t-shirts from his college, or his old jersey. He's almost never separated from his leather jacket, a gift from his mother before she died, and although not when on the clock, his Glock 17. Although Liam is younger, Bob's less mature, and looks up to the man four years his junior, and the two of them have a bit of a competition for the interest of Becka, though neither has told her about their interest.

Bob's recollection of his last game, against Miskatonic:
It was Halloween, horrible day for a football game, but that's what the schedule was. We were up in Massachusetts, against one of the lesser known schools up there, Miskatonic. Now, sometimes, when people describe members of a football team as monsters, they're using it metaphorically. But these guys, well, they were monsters. I swear. Trolls, Ogres, Orcs, at least, that's what my roomie told me they were once I described them to him. At the time they just looked inhuman. Huge hulking figures, gnarled teeth. I just couldn't stand it. I left the field as soon as I saw them. The guys blamed me for the loss, but Miskatonic was undefeated that year. Not a single loss. They've gotten better since, I've watched some of their games. They throw about half of them, so they end up out of the playoffs, but still, they're monsters. A team full of monsters. But, then again, you know about monsters, don't you Joel.

Role: Bob serves as a face for the Scoobies, and also as Joel's bodyguard, though like every other member of the Scoobies, he fills more than just those roles, including acting as Liam's cover at work, in case Corporate questions why the manager and assistant manager are missing during the middle of the day. He's also the only one of the Scoobies who has a degree, having completed it just last year, finishing up the final semester after he lost his football scholarship.

Description: In his mid-thirties, and of average hight and build, Aleksander lives the life of a successful trial lawyer, fancy condo in the heart of the city, sports car, good food and wine, but aside from his neighbors and the bouncers of his favorite clubs, almost nobody knows who he is, that is, until they need his, and his partner Johanna Sheets, unique perspective. The two of them started a law firm after Johanna passed the Bar to serve clients who have fallen onto the wrong side of the law in the process of chasing Shadows. Although he dresses well, he also carries a Glock 20 at all times, unless he's in court or some other locale they don't allow firearms, and is always watchful, just in case he has to go chasing himself.

Role: Aleksander is a researcher, an investigator, the one that puts the pieces of the puzzle together, so that Johanna can successfully lead the defense of their clients in court, or hopefully, out of it. In the process of his investigations, he's come across some rather occult materials, he knows they are valuable, but he hasn't studied them enough to know exactly what they do, or at least, how to make them do what he thinks they should do, instead relying on his wits, and his Glock as a backup.

Vignette:
Aleksander Losowski, Assistant District Attorney kept supremely out of his depth. Just eight hours before, as he followed the female vampire out of the party, he was sure it would be a simple matter of splashing her with holy water and a quick and deadly silver stab to finish her off. Instead, it had turned into eight hours of cat and mouse across the campus, and across town, as went from populated area to populated area. If it wasn't for the obvious lack of reflection, as well as her aversion to running water and garlic, Aleks would have guessed she was just a rich Goth, and not a stalker of the night. Finally, she had left a final early morning coffee bar and retreated to the relative safety of the steam tunnels. Having researched the campus for weeks beforehand, Aleks knew that that particular steam tunnel only went one way, and that if he went in the other end, closer to the physical plant, he'd be able to corner her and take her our in relative obscurity. So, penlight in one hand and holy water in the other, he carefully walked down the tunnel. About five minutes before sunup he though he caught a ray or two of early light, so he thought better of the light and turned it off, advancing in just the dim glow of the intermittent grate to the world above. Just as he got to a corner, which he knew led directly to where the vampire had come in, he popped the top off his holy water and turned the corner. Suddenly the tunnel was full of light, and Aleks let out an uncharacteristic scream of surprise, which was echoed by whomever had turned the corner. His holy water now splashed harmlessly on the ground, Aleks turned on his penlight, illuminating a younger woman in her mid-twenties wearing a pair of jeans and a hoodie.
"I'm so sorry," the woman frantically pled, backing into the outside of the corner, "I'm so sorry."
"Bloody h–ll, you nearly killed me!" Aleks shouted at her, his heart racing. She didn't look like what the vampire looked like, but he wasn't sure if the undead b-tch could change her looks or not.
"Quiet" hissed the woman.
"Why?" questioned Aleks, lowering his penlight. He then glanced around, "You expecting something else down here?"
"Yeah, why else would I be stalking through the steam tunnels with a wooden stake?"
"Ah, so you're after her too, eh?" replied Aleks, hoping that his upbeat attitude would calm the irate younger woman down. "Well, I didn't see her come past me, so we must of missed her someplace."
"Wait, you're hunting a vampire?" asked the woman, not sure if Aleks was talking about the same thing she was.
"Aren't you?" he asked, smirking slightly.
"Maybe?" she replied coyly, "Not saying I was, not saying I wasn't"
Aleks put two and two together, and then made a bit of a mental leap, "You're here for the law summit too."
She stuck out her lower lip, an expression that, in another time or place, Aleks would have found adorable, "How'd you know?"
"Well, the noncommittal answer is textbook. That, and since it's the middle of July, why else would a young woman like you be on a college campus?" Aleks deducted. He also thought he had seen her at the welcome party the night before, the same party that he saw the vampire at, which confirmed that she wasn't the vampire, which meant that it was still out there.
"And you? You're what, thirty? Shouldn't you be in some office somewhere?" she bit back.
Aleks gasped quietly, he was a bit touchy about being thirty, he'd just has his birthday a week before, "Hey, I'm giving a talk about new ways to use the Internet in the practice of Law."
The woman's face turned white, a sign Aleks took as a bad one.
"What's wrong?" he asked, trying to sound a bit brave, and a bit calmer than he actually felt, "There a bug on me?"
She shook her head, and grabbed another stake from the pocket of her pants.
Aleks gulped, "She's right behind me, isn't she?"
Aleks lunged forwards, just as the woman charged over him at the vampire. A flash of light and the smell of ash suddenly filled the confined space of the steam tunnel.
He rolled over, he business suit ruined by the mud and muck at the bottom of the tunnel.
Seeing as how the danger had been neutralized, and in proper Buffy fashion, he stuck out his hand to her, "Aleksander Losowski."
"Johanna Sheets," she replied as she took his hand and helped hum onto his feet.
"Nice to meet you Johanna," he said, idling dusting off his suit, but knowing that a massive dry cleaning bill would be required to return it anywhere close to the condition it was in just the night before.
"So," he admitted, "I missed her."
"Yeah, apparently that's why she ran into the tunnels, she could turn into steam."
"Ah," said Aleks, realizing that the law student knew as much about vampire as he did, if not more, "Well, live and learn."
"Yeah, live and learn."
"Oh, and thanks," he said, turning on the charm.
"You're welcome," was all she replied, as she lead the way back down the tunnel.

Description: Johanna is younger than her partner, in her later twenties, just a few years past her Bar exam, but already an experienced litigator, as well as an experienced Shadow Chaser. Her long blonde hair is usually done up in a bun, though sometime she decided to braid in and let it hang down her back Lara Craft style. She usually wears a stylish pant-suit, and like her partner, is armed any time she's legally able. Instead of the sports car of Aleksander, Johanna has, in addition to a small downtown condo, a large suburban home, practically a mansion, and drives a much less obvious, and more spacious, luxury sedan. On weekends she fronts for a local Ska band, which is rapidly gaining in popularity, allowing for access to places that even as a famous lawyer she couldn't get into.

Role: Johanna handles most of the in-court face-to-face, letting Aleksander handle the research and pre-trial paperwork. When he's forced, or when he feels it helps her clients or their case, she'll switch into more casual gear, and aside from the higher quality, would be undistinguishable from any other Chaser.

Vignette:
Johanna creeped along the steam tunnel, flashlight in one hand, stake in the other. She knew her quarry had come down this way, so it was only a matter of time, and with the coming dawn, it wouldn't be able to escape until nightfall. She caught a glimpse of a light from around a bend up ahead, and quickly extinguished her flashlight, unfortunately, whomever, or whatever, was around the corner, did the same. So, in near total darkness, Johanna continued her advance.
Now mere feet from the corner, Johanna switched her grip on the stake, from an underhand to an overhand style. A quick sidestep, and she switched on her flashlight as she rounded the corner. The person on the other side screamed and Johanna dropped the stake as she screamed too. She had nearly staked an innocent man, as her quarry was female.
"I'm so sorry," she pled, backing into the outside of the bend, "I'm so sorry."
"Bloody h–ll, you nearly killed me!" shouted the man.
"Quiet" Johanna hissed back.
"Why?" whispered the man as he lowered his own flashlight, more of a penlight to Johanna's Mag Light, "you expecting something else down here?"
"Yeah, why else would I be stalking through the steam tunnels with a wooden stake?"
"Ah, so you're after her too, eh? Well, I didn't see her come past me, so we must of missed her someplace."
"Wait, you're hunting a vampire?"

Johanna's face turned white.
"What's wrong?" he asked, "There a bug on me?"
Johanna shook her head, and grabbed another stake from the pocket of her pants.
"She's right behind me, isn't she?"
Johanna nodded, then lunged, just as the man dived forward as well, under her lunge, and out of her way.
A flash of light and the smell of ash suddenly filled the confined space of the steam tunnel.
The man rolled over and stuck out his hand to Johanna, "Aleksander Losowski."
Johanna grabbed it, pulling him up, "Johanna Sheets."
"Nice to meet you Johanna. So, I missed her."
"Yeah, apparently that's why she ran into the tunnels, she could turn into steam."
"Ah, well, live and learn."
"Yeah, live and learn."

Visual and Personality Description: August Melborne appears to be your average early-twenties human male, five-nine, light skin, tangly brown hair that barely reaches his neck, blue eyes, t-shirt and jeans. His only unique feature is his thin build. Despite his less than outstanding appearance, there has always been an odd air about him; he always seems to be checking over his shoulder, glancing down an alleyway, stopping just to listen, perhaps simply habits generated through light paranoia, or maybe simple need for awareness, but they still draw the curiosity of those who spend time with him. He has never been a man of many words, though he is by no means unsociable. August spends more time listening than talking, gaging the opinion and manner of his fellow before choosing his reply - which can range from a quick, to-the-point remark to a feature-length monologue to best illustrate his point (often to comedic effect).
Friends who ask might be informed that he grew up in Seattle, Washington and moved out to go to law school in Boston, Massachusetts, abandoned that plan quickly and retreated to his former career in forensics. They will also learn that he almost married his highschool sweetheart when he was twenty-one, but she left him for a more devoted man. Those who pry will be gifted with the knowledge that the real reason for their split-up was the inability to cope with the death of their unborn child only a month before his due date.

The Origin: ... but only a select few know that, up until a particularly dark night some five years ago, he never even existed - not in this world anyway. As a complete and unfortunate coincidence, August first appeared in epic fashion before a group of barely religious college students conducting a silly and groundless ritual to commune with spirits they did not believe in. To put it into words, his magnificent arrival began with an unseen portal causing the smoke from the young adults' incense to swirl intensely. They were fear struck, believing their false incantation had indeed worked. It was not long before the originally pale Melborne plummeted from the portal and onto the group's wigi board, breaking the wicker table it sat upon. The rest of the memory gets hazy, being knocked out on impact can do that to a man, but August clearly remembers the students arguing about what to do with him, and something about him being the work of Satan. Cutting a long story short, he befriended one of the girls in the circle of friends and escaped the most apparently noble of the college goers. This string of events, of course, led to yet another cult believing the end of the world was nigh, with the specific twist that the founders had done the great evil of summoning the Antichrist via wigi board, gibberish words, and incense. Needless to say, this particular branch of protestantism was quickly disowned by the others and died out shortly thereafter due to failed courses and parental threats to cut college funding.

Interruption: Just in case you are wondering if the aforementioned woman could possibly be the fiancé he often tells his friends about, she is not. The story of almost marrying someone, and having a sweetheart at all are a complete fabrication, though he does use Malissa - the young lady - as an inspiration while speaking of the fabled girlfriend. August actually parted with Malissa soon after his rescue because she elected to finish her schooling instead of run away with a mysterious and rather clueless man. What she did do before she walked out of his life was name him, which is why the poor man is named after a month in the year, has a middle initial and no middle name, and his last name holds no significant link to his heritage.
Now onto more important things...

More Background: Melborne spent the proceeding year getting used to modern culture, something intriguing to him as it differed so much from a world he could not remember. It was amusing to him, really, to be able to recognize that his new home was so different from his old one - even though he did not know exactly how so or how much. Regardless, considering just how different things must have been in his home realm, he did very well adapting to his new surroundings and began to build the background he lies about today.
Despite his humorous beginnings, August's life on earth was about to take a turn for the serious. It was another six months once he had fully adapted before he encountered his first relative, in the form of a vicious shadowbeast that killed two of his acquaintances and nearly took his life as well. He barely escaped the attack and hid in one of the aforementioned acquaintance's house for another day before fleeing at the first sign of visitors. The next few nights were spent on the street trying and failing to sleep.
Finally, on the fifth night, he resolved to face the creature again, this time with the weapon he had found in the slain woman's home. His first search proved unsuccessful, as the creature had moved on from the first killing. However, rumors of another series of murders a few blocks north proved invaluable on his second night out. He found the beast, indeed, and just in time. Reacting quickly August fired the small handgun at the six-legged creature, scoring a lucky shot and wounding it before it could pounce one of the cowering humans before it. He tried again and missed by a whole two meters, but he did succeed in drawing the monster's attention. No sooner had he cursed his inaccuracy than a tentacle reached out to whip him.
Fortunately for him, he was just outside the creature's reach... though that was likely to change. Before he could fire again, however, another shot struck the foe from a different direction; this first bullet was followed by another, and then another until the beast collapsed to the floor. A dark figure stepped up to the incapacitated shadow and pressed a large pistol up to its head, whispering something August could not understand before firing again. The creature melted into the shadows rapidly, and was completely gone before the unknown man could reach Melborne.
"Thanks for the help. I don't think I could have saved those people without you," a gruff voice told him, emitting from a dark skinned man offering a hand to shake.
"Just doing what I could... I guess," he answered.
"Is this your first time?" his savior asked.
"First time? There are more of these things?" August thought he should be surprised, even tried to be so, but he simply could not. Something inside him knew about the thing they had just killed. He finally shook the man's hand.
"Plenty, unfortunately, more than I can manage by myself."
"I don't suppose you're looking for help?"
"Maybe I am," the man replied soundly, "You up to it?"
"Maybe I am," the othersider mimicked, though not mockingly. This earned a small grin from his new acquaintance, who he learned was a former policeman named Richard Harold Morrison. He began working with Richard the next week, helping in building construction by day and hunting shadows by night. In time he had fully constructed an identity and, for reasons unknown to him, found that he actually existed as a United States citizen. The hunts went on for two and a half years before Richard was killed by a powerful shadow creature. After escaping the suspicion of the local law enforcement, as well as his coworkers, August decided he needed a new locale and moved to another state.
Though a strange series of events, he found himself taking up a career as a private investigator and using his occupation as an excuse to snoop around at night. He has been hunting there ever since, and though he has replaced his friend's handgun with a finer weapon he keeps the firearm close as a memento.

The Present: As a Shadowchaser, August is a skilled tracker and investigator, with sharp eyes and ears to keep him in tune with his surroundings (and out of ambushes.) His hunts with Richard steadied his hand, and honed other skills necessary to survival including first aid among other important skills. He is more than willing to work with others, but is slow to trust them.
August is not a stunt driver by any stretch of the imagination, but he sports a street bike for transportation.

Role: Incase the last paragraph did not illustrate his role well enough, August works as a spotter and tracker for the group, as well as a medic if no one of more talent is available. He is a decent ranged combatant, and prefers to keep his enemies within decent range, but not too close. On the attack, his skills also play well to ambushing foes.

(Note: I would have preferred he use something less conspicuous, like a Honda Shadow, but that's not in the corebook.)

"So," asked Captain Wykowski, as he sat behind his desk, leaning back and looking at the shaken Specialist standing at attention on the other side. "What brings you to me?"
The Specialist glances down at the Captain's desk, at her file open in front of him, then looks at the Captain, "Sir, I was reassigned. Sir."
The Captain sighed, "I can see that Specialist. What I don't see is why a perfectly good mechanic was reassigned to an Infantry company. Says here you did two tours in Iraq. Is that true Specialist?"
"Sir," answered the Specialist, "I completed one tour and was reassigned before I could complete my second your. Sir."
"Good, I like honest soldiers in my Company. But, you still have not answered my question. What brings you to me?"
The Specialist pauses.
"Well?" asked Captain Wykowski again.
"I," began the Specialist tentatively. "Sir, I saw something. Sir."
"You saw something Specialist? You're going to have to be more specific. What did you see?"
"I saw something that wasn't, couldn't be real. Sir."
"Ah, which is why they sent you here. Now, was that so hard?"
The Specialist's expression went from one of fear to one of inquiry, "Sir, no it was not. But, why does that not bother you Sir?"
"Specialist," began the Captain, "I see more impossible things in a week than most people see in their lifetimes. It's my job. And now, as long as you're in this Army, it's yours." He stood up and reached across his desk, offering a hand shake, "Welcome to Shadow Company Specialist."
"Shadow Company Sir?" asked the Specialist as she shook his hand, "I thought this was Echo Company, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry?"
Wykowski smiled, "Of course it is Specialist. That's what it says, but like I said. Impossible things happen all the time."

Role: Captain Wykowski leads Shadow Company operations for the front, fighting alongside the soldiers, inspiring and leading them to victory. As a graduate of West Point, he's trained in matters of tactics and history, and as the Company Commander, he has valuable field experience fighting against the creatures of Shadow.
