| #1FailedlegendSep 24, 2013 1:53:02 | So uh yeah first time playing SWSE or any star wars PnP for that matter and I love me some Ewoks and I love me some force lightning...so I'm wanting to make a Neutral Force User (former Ewok Shaman) that's primarily uses a single lightsaber and Force Powers The backstory is pretty in depth but long story short is...Was Ewok Shaman/Leader, Imperials attacked village, Imperial Officer stole Ewok Daughter (weird tastes I guess), Ewok Angry searches for daughter, Meets Jedi tuned Neutral Force User, Ex-Jedi hones Ewok Natural ability with the force, Ewok resumes hunt for daughter utilizing both sides of the force to do so. Now I'm sure I got a few things wrong like for exampole it seems that Jedi dont just automatically get force powers they have to take force training to gain 1+Wis Mood force powers...is this right? A few house rules that are relevant - Despite Ewoks getting no proficiencies the DM allowed me to keep lightsaber proficiency due to being trained by an Ex-Jedi - The DM Granted me a free "Force Training" feat at lvl 1 to reflect my training with the Ex-Jedi and my Shaman background - The DM has decided Weapon Finesse grants attack and damage Anyways that said this is what I have so far (this is for a 1-20 campaign so is currently only level one but the plan is Force User 7 -> Force Adept -> Force Disciple but I'm open to pretty much any force based classes) Note: The DM has limited us to the core book for now since well that's the only book we have and since she's new.
Str 9 (-1) Skills: UTF (7), Perception (8), Survival (13), Inititative (8) HP: 31 Ref: 16 Melee: 4 (2d8+7)
Talents Force Powers (Usable once an encounter, Nat 20 recharges all powers) Force Lightning: Range - 6 UTF vs. Reflex 8d6 damage -1 C-Track (save for half) Note: Can continue to hold an object every round with a new UTF check and standard action Battle Strike - Makes UTF to add extra damage to an attack Throw Lightsaber - Make a melee lightsaber attack up to 6 squares away, lightsaber returns to you hand afterwards with successful UTF check
Equipment: Black Lightsaber (2-handed for Ewok, Single Blade 2d8), Short-Range Com, Field Kit, Concealed Wrist Holster (Lightsaber), Heavy Cloak (just clothes).
A Droid Scoundrel w/ plans to go gunslinger Scout or Soldier that will be a Bounty Hunter A Sith focused on being a front line fighter A force power focused Sith that was kicked out of the academy for insisting the sith were misinterpreting the Sith Mantra and continues as such. A Sentient Droid Ship/Pilot (think EDI from Mass Effect or Max from Flight of the Navigator) The last one is unsure...wants to be a jedi but would have the same issue a Paladin would with the rest of the party its full of Siths (Blackguards) and Neutral characters. |

You're far more likely to get additional, and more timely, responses there. Now I'll try to answer some of your questions but will have a big criticism.
1. Getting Force Powers DOES require spending a general feat for the Force Training feat. It requires UtF as a trained skill and there are two species that can get it as a racial bonus. It is a VERY powerful feat in most cases and certainly NEVER something I'd give a character for free.
2. There's nothing saying an Ewok could not start in the Jedi class. Furthermore, nothing about the "Primitive" racial trait prevents a character from getting WP(lightsaber) as a starting feat.
3. Your GM should NOT be allowing Weapon Finesse to substitute DEX for damage as well as for attack. There are two TALENTS available from PrCs that would allow that but it is not something that a feat should do.
4. Do not limit yourself to just the "Force" based classes if something else has an ability/talent/skill that you believe would be useful. A key concept about building characters with the SAGA system is that names do not matter. Just because you start your character as a Ewok Jedi 1 that does NOT mean you need to be a character who follows the Jedi Tradition.
5. At least with SWSE just using the core rulebook (SECR) you can still make just about any character type you want. Now some are a bit more challenging but unlike many RPGs you can still do just fine using only the SECR.
6. Using Force Lighting WILL turn your character to the darkside. There is a talent available to a very rare force tradition, and by extension to the "master" classes like Force Disciple, that can get rid of the Darkside descriptor on Force Lighting but that will be along way off.
7. When Move Object (MO) is used as an attack your UtF check need to exceed the target's REF Defense for it to do damage to both the target and to the object thrown. I will mention that the most broken thing about the SWSE system is making skill checks vs. defense scores and UtF with Move Object provides a prime example of the problem. I don't want to go into it more here as I've said much about it in the past. I also want to note that if you try to deal damage using MO you can NOT maintain the power.
Comments on your build: Ability Score as TOO HIGH!! What you have there is the equivalent of point buy (planned generation) with 40 points which is nearly twice the standard 25 point buy is for heroes and that is already 10 points higher than the 15 non-heroic characters should get. With those stats I'd be treating your 1st-level character as if it were 2nd or 3rd level because the stats add that much.
It looks to me like you are starting in Jedi (Force User) which means you can NOT have Survival as a trained skill if you are only using the SECR. One book does have a way to do that but you aren't using it so I'll not say which one.
Even with your GM's foolish houserule about Weapon Finesse you're damage modifier would be incorrect. A two-handed weapon just double the STR bonus and that would be the only bonus this character has.
Your feats really should be: WP (lightsaber, simple), Force Sensitiivity, Force Training. You can save Weapon Finesse until your bonus feat for Jedi2 and you shouldn't qualify for the conditional skill focus at this time.
As for your group I STRONGLY recommend that a first time GM stay away from a Sith Party which is what you're looks like it is. I also suggest she turn down the volume (power level as seen by the freebies and stats) which can help avoid problems of making a lot of advice and pregenerated stuff far less useful. If possible I suggest you point her toward to forum I mentioned earlier. |
