| #1RagitsuJun 18, 2009 5:27:10 | http://www.amazon.com/d20-Modern-Roleplaying-Game-Rulebook/dp/0786928360/ref=cm_cr-mr-title Around $100 for a new copy? Yeesh !On the other hand, if you're tired of d20 Modern (:mad , you can sell your book for about three to four times the price you paid for it. |
| #2chonenJun 18, 2009 7:47:27 | Ya that definitely is a barrier to entry, or at least making people more likely to get pdf files. The Core books are cheaper on Ebay though. And most of the supplements are super cheap. |
| #3TheRealOrionJun 18, 2009 21:14:13 | Still, not a bad time to buy up whatever's still at your local shop. Looks like cover price is just as good as used price right now. Damn. |
| #4RagitsuJun 18, 2009 22:24:28 | Yeah, well, the "just buy used" argument is wearing real thin. |
| #5TheRealOrionJun 18, 2009 23:12:22 | Who's been saying that? Not trying to be sarcastic. Just curious. As I said somewhere else (can't remember which thread), we're all going to be printing up the SRDs and putting them in binders really soon. |
| #6RagitsuJun 19, 2009 16:28:12 | Who's been saying that? Not trying to be sarcastic. Just curious. Some people here, and on practically any other d20 based board I visit. The problem with this is threefold. Since we are now hunting for "used" books instead of relying on a dependable output of product, the supply is much more greatly limited. Secondly, not everyone wants to buy a used book, either on general principle or because of any defects/marks that come from (mis?)use. Lastly, it is harder to pitch or get into a system where the supplements aren't being made anymore. |
| #7nobodez_hereJun 30, 2009 9:49:51 | I guess I'm lucky I got my third copy for list value a year ago. $75 for the cheapest new, $128 for the most expensive new. That's why I love my FLGS! |
| #8malburJun 30, 2009 11:09:06 | Another alternative is to use the SRD... true it doesn't have some stuff, but I recently started a campaign and that's all we've been using... I'm the DM (and played D&D before) so i arbitrarily set exp rewards and stuff (or I would if they got through any content! Learned that lesson though, super short missions that are basically straightforward until they get used to it...). Not that I don't want the core rulebook... I'd love it in fact, just can't afford it right now used or new. what is the legal issue with things like .pdfs? Since it's been abandoned and out of print, and they provide srds, are pdfs illegal? gray area? legal? what's the story? |
| #9narukagamiJun 30, 2009 12:35:45 | .pdfs of Modern are still considered piracy, even if Wizards, who still owns the copyrights/ect, have completely abandoned the product in all but IP ownership. You gotta do what you gotta do. |
| #10TheRealOrionJun 30, 2009 13:15:12 | Well, "illegal" is a misnomer. PDF's are copyright infringement. They're a violation of a special privilege that comes with ownership of intellectual property. If you infringe on copyright, the owner merely has the right to sue you. Unless you're doing it on a large scale and making money at it, it simply is not a crime. Legally, morally, and logically, it's just not theft. That doesn't mean it's suddenly a-okay to do it, or that I'm advocating it. I just like to clear up the lies that the MPAA and RIAA spread. |
| #11malburJun 30, 2009 13:29:32 | then the search for cheap copies while using the SRD continues :-\ |
| #12TheRealOrionJun 30, 2009 14:19:02 | Pretty much. If only the XP tables were available somewhere, you'd be set. S'too bad, really. There's no other product to fill the niche, unlike D&D where you can play 4e if you want, so if you don't have the d20M books, you're only about 90% able to play the game. eBay is your friend! |
| #13malburJun 30, 2009 17:38:26 | true... but it's not hard to take the Challenge ratings from the srd and then applying the tables from D&D for exp.. what else do you miss out on? I'm really not sure... |
| #14RagitsuJun 30, 2009 19:07:40 | Content aside, the d20 Modern Core Rulebook is one of the most finely crafted books i've ever owned. |
| #15malburJun 30, 2009 19:35:24 | i've seen it. I played a campaign 2 years ago when books were still able to be found and i remember how nice it was. Wish I could find another copy :-\. sorry for the thread highjack btw... really though, as I remember, the book is pretty awesome. I really liked the comic type images. |
| #16TheRealOrionJun 30, 2009 19:37:15 | true... but it's not hard to take the Challenge ratings from the srd and then applying the tables from D&D for exp.. what else do you miss out on? I'm really not sure... Do they line up? I'm on vacation so I can't check my copies. I know that d20M characters are a little less powerful in general, but did they just depower all of it and then leave the CRs and the XP awards as is? |
| #17malburJun 30, 2009 20:21:08 | idk if it's a direct match... but it's generally close enough for me... I also generally give more exp than the tables say to because i'm a big fan of levelling :-\. also, low level's aren't that fun, get a little higher and it's better... and then exp slows down anyways. |
