I was just wondering if it is known whether or not WotC plans to make new material for d20 Modern (or even overhaul the game; It would be nice to see a modern era game using SW Saga's system).

here you go

I've asked Solice about d20 Modern's future. Looking into it, she tells me there are plans for an updated d20 modern game BUT no ETA on when, or when there will be an announcement. The exact quote is "We do plan on updating the d20 rules and content, but we do not have a date at this time. Stay tuned!"

Speaking of future, and sci-fi, using Saga's rule system, check out the Land of Nod found in my signature!

Ok, I know, that was a shameless plug... but, did I mention I am dying for some feedback on my fluff from sci-fi enthusiasts? :D :P

As far as I can see, on downloaded PDFs, I haven't seen the actual book... ever.

Awesome. I probably could tailor Saga to a modern setting, but I don't ever have the motivation to undertake projects like that. That is why, after all, we pay people, like WotC, to make products for us. Though I do dearly hope they go the Saga route and not the 4e route.

I suppose you could ask the question about why WotC needs to update d20 at all. There are numerous tweaks and house rules commonly available to plug the holes well enough. There are many 3rd party content developers delivering nearly every genre to the system.

If you wanted a more robust and detailed version of the d20 rules you could move over to Spycraft.

If you wanted a lighter and more flexible version of d20 you could move over to True20.

In both cases, existing d20 content ports over on the fly pretty easily.

WotC's delivery of "tool boxes" has been a nobel effort, but rarely delivered in a satisfactory way inside the d20 Modern label. I don't see much value in rule changes just to put "New Edition" on the cover of the manual. There would have to be some value and defined goals to be delivered. Something like "easier playability" or "faster play" would be good design goals. But simply new release for the sake of new release would not be anything compelling to me as a buyer. I suspect that WotC is struggling to decide what design/product goals they have for the genre as well. Plus they have huge development efforts in their flagship lines at the moment. D20 Modern has never been even a 5% share holder of their product line.

But as I said... all is not lost. The SRD still stands and there are still years of playable content out there from 3rd party developers/writers. The system as it stands today is highly flexible. While not the "newest thing" it still reamains as a completely viable game system for a broad spectrum of players.
