Apr 22, 2008 20:53:59 Just use D&D then with a few house rules and tweaks.

Edit the spell lists to fit middle earth, (get rid of the big flash bang and summoning type spells)

use spelless variants for Paladins, Rangers etc.

make the istari Aasimars, and drop clerics and use favoured souls instead which would fit with the concept of each of them being the servant of a particular valar (but get rid of the wings), and rename them Wizards, change turn/rebuke undead to Turn/rebuke outsider, drop spontaneous healing in favour of a spontaneous domain spell.

(as each of the istari had "domains",maybe give these domains to the wizards, Radaghast gets Plants and Animals, Saruman would be Knowledge and Artifice, Gandalf would be knowledge and good)

Wild orcs become goblins, Mordor orcs are orcs, the Uruk hai are hobgoblins.
The Balrog is a Balor, Sauron is a wingless pitfiend lich (see libris mortis for fiendish liches) favoured soul of Morgoth with evil,darkness,destruction type domains, is incorporeal and unable to use his spells or spell like abilities without his phylactery, the one ring.

a lot of it just requires tweaking and rewriting the flavour text, for instance use the stats as outlined above for Sauron, but instead of being red scaly and horned (which he probably was under the armor, i know he was described as being hot, which is why the writing on ring glows when he wears it) describe him as being slim and clad in ornate black platemail, give him a kickass mace, and some feats from savage species (like the one where you can attack an area, and watch him wade through battlefields).

D&D is largely derived from Tolkienesq fantasy anyway (with a few dollops from Morcock, Lovecraft and some others).
