| #1trappedsliderFeb 19, 2010 13:45:34 | So with recent postings its started to become clear that we really have no reason to keep the ofrums at all, that the fights in the past to keep the forums were pointless so i'm taking the pluse of whats left of the caring community before I go to webster and dicuss permently locking the d20 modern forums down for deletion... |
| #2stormwrathFeb 19, 2010 14:15:38 | What? and No! If some people want to move to another galaxy its their prerogative. The Modern board should remain. Many of us will continue posting here and answering questions by people who want to join the ever expending Modern family. One forum doesn't exclude the other. Its the beauty of internet. You certainly do NOT have my ascent to write to webster. regards storm |
| #3backstabbistFeb 19, 2010 15:04:49 | Keeping the forum open would only make sense if they want to support the game in ANY way in the future... which has become ubiquotusly clear they have no real intention of doing. We can read the writing on the wall, any nod to Modern will come in Deck or HealingSurge form, via BoosterTCG or 16page 4e splatbook WoC aint the ones selling the modern books anymore, its the bargin bins and internet sites that have either $5 Modern bin books or $250 calling them rare. The classic Modern fans aint interested in any new Deck/4Splat, so trying to hang onto those fans aint worth it, and anyone that will buy the Deck/4Splat will do so without regard to this forum closing: they already hang out at the woc board's Deckville & 4etopia The WoC Cares For Modern dipstick comes in the form of Project Javelin: they just stopped doing it a long time ago |
| #4trappedsliderFeb 19, 2010 15:30:54 | What? and No! If some people want to move to another galaxy its their prerogative. The Modern board should remain. Many of us will continue posting here and answering questions by people who want to join the ever expending Modern family. One forum doesn't exclude the other. Its the beauty of internet. and its my long standing preogative that the forum usege is way down and if it is moved it would be the legacy forums, where folks can still read just not post,we're already spread out at brilliant gameologist thanks to me and then your plugging your site,so theres really no point outside of folks who mange to get thire hands on the book or srd to keep the forum and like BS has said there isn't any clear intention of supporting the game anymore. Now if there was something in the line up then i'd be all for keeping the forums, but right now its just turning into an advertising area for other places. EDIT: And before some says but you worked your butt off keeping this place around, I know I did, which is why this pains me to see this place like this.... EDIT II: oh BS,do you have that list of d20 vets who still hang aorund here? I'd like thire input on this... |
| #5stormwrathFeb 19, 2010 15:48:23 |
I would like to thank you personaly for all the work you put in. I was a lurker before I started posting not so long ago. I think at this point we should just let the boat ride the waves. If Wotc sees that the number daily posts doesn't justify the expense then its up to them to pull the plug. Calling for closure at this point is premature IMHO. Storm |
| #6zammmFeb 19, 2010 16:06:55 | I would agree with Stormwrath here. I admit I'm not a part of the d20 Modern community in any way, but I can't really see what purpose shutting down this forum would serve. If the forum dies on its own, it dies and that's that, but shutting it down before that happens just because it's low-traffic accomplishes no beneficial purpose. |
| #7TheRealOrionFeb 19, 2010 16:20:16 | I agree with zamm. Given that Wizards maintains a huge set of discussion fora anyway, closing down one little forum doesn't make all that much difference. I'm not going to stop posting here just because I have other places to post. This forum still has a purpose; other fora just have different purposes. |
| #8trappedsliderFeb 19, 2010 16:31:11 | Maybe I'm jsuit irriated by the hwole attitude about of "we don't need WotC" and this was jsut a natural out growth of that attitude? I'm currently doing my own thing behidn the screens trying to get us out from D&D but I mean it just seems pointless to do it,if thats gonna be the attitude you know.. |
| #9dulsiFeb 19, 2010 16:35:10 | I see no reason to shut down these forums. They have higer traffic than some of the setting forums. Threads like Advice for a new GM in a Modern Setting show that this place still has value. |
| #10TheRealOrionFeb 19, 2010 16:48:31 | I didn't mean any of those statements as a "scorched Earth policy." I'm not looking to burn bridges; I just want to acknowledge that Wizards is not, for its own quite consistent reasons, interesting in building a bridge to d20 Modern, at least not the version of it that we play. I don't "need" Wizards any more than I "need" gaming in general. My point was that there are certain things that we have to acknowledge we're not going to get out of Wizards, specifically more support for a line of games that they don't seem interested in producing any more. If Wizards isn't going to give us that support, then we're going to seek it somewhere else. It doesn't mean that I'm going to stop coming here. |
| #11Master_VegaFeb 19, 2010 17:35:09 | I'd prefer if the board stayed open. I might not post much anymore, but I do keep up to date on what is being discussed here. There are still new, awesome ideas posted here, and far fewer blatently offensive statements are made here than at BG. >_> |
| #12rustam1Feb 19, 2010 19:28:01 | No, no, don't take away the Modern forums! bad, trapslider, bad kitty. it's not nice to say such things, even if it is just to make contraversial conversation. naughty, naughty! |
| #13Cyber-DaveFeb 19, 2010 19:39:29 | I also think that this board should stick around, and asking that it be shut down is a very premature move. |
| #14theguernFeb 19, 2010 20:05:22 | Hello, So I kinda lurk around here alot. Only ever made two posts here before this one though. Basically I have no right to give an opinion. What I do want to say is I find this forum very useful as a resource. I realise this isn't a place to advertise other sites but before this forum is closed (if it is) I'd love to know where people post in other d20 modern forums. You know, so I can lurk there instead. |
| #15trappedsliderFeb 19, 2010 20:30:18 | I think I just g9ot tired of being the optimist around here and that lead me to posting this....just the reaction of "its not going to do anything" and such to my thread dicussing my letter![]() EDIT: Hello, Hi there, The forum iisn't going anywher. I'm just venting my festuration in a very odd way... |
| #16narukagamiFeb 20, 2010 0:09:45 | So you're going to threaten to have a forum shut down because you don't like the reaction you got from one of your threads? I'd step back a minute and put that into perspective before you do anything stupid. ![]() Just because we have other venues of discussion doesn't mean we're not going to still use this one, the official forum where its more likely you'll see more discussion. I mean, I lurk ENWorld, doesn't mean I don't lurk here too. |
| #17backstabbistFeb 20, 2010 0:20:22 | Guern-So I kinda lurk around here alot. Only ever made two posts here before this one though. Basically I have no right to give an opinion. hogwash you are exactly the voice we need to hear |
| #18narukagamiFeb 20, 2010 0:30:11 | Guern-So I kinda lurk around here alot. Only ever made two posts here before this one though. Basically I have no right to give an opinion. ![]() |
| #19malburFeb 20, 2010 0:40:31 | I too generally lurk here rather than post, I would also be saddened to see this go (which has been cleared up as not happening i think). Anyways, there has been fighting and disagreements, but one thing i think we have to remember is when things get heated, we're all here because we love the game. We may interpret it differently, we may look at it with different views and different interests (powergamers vs. roleplayers... a topic i've always had difficulty with in my circles) or what not, but in the end, we all just want to get the most fun out of this game. I believe because of our interest in having fun, we ALWAYS have to remember that we have to keep our cool. If we disagree, that's fine... just don't attack one another. If anything, i think the feuds are something that have contributed to decreased posting as anything that reaches a few pages of posts runs the risk of becoming a flame war, through no individuals fault. Again, I lurk and have been for a couple of years, so I don't want to lecture you veterans to the board... but that's just something I see that has happened. OH and what ever happened to Fort Monroeville? I thought we'd keep that going and make a bada** city out of it! |
| #20trappedsliderFeb 20, 2010 0:47:34 | So you're going to threaten to have a forum shut down because you don't like the reaction you got from one of your threads? Its the over all reaction that bugs me the whole feeling that evceryone but me has given up on the hope that WotC will make another d20 modern
we need stats for NPCs... |
| #21malburFeb 20, 2010 1:00:44 | yes, NPCS are needed... as well as an actual map of the city. Unfortunately, those are two of my worst features, I can make story but i'm not sure how to stat people... And I think that the people are more worried about the possible reincarnation of D20 Modern. The people who enjoy d20 Modern as it is now, like it because it remains 3.5ish, a rule set that we (many of us at least) prefer because of the liberties it allows us. After seeing how WotC changed D&D in 4th edition, most of us are afraid that they'll do something similar, in effect damaging what we love... |
| #22narukagamiFeb 20, 2010 1:05:04 | Its the over all reaction that bugs me the whole feeling that evceryone but me has given up on the hope that WotC will make another d20 modern I get where your disappointment is coming from, but this is going to sound REALLY mean/rude of me so I want to appologize in advance, I REALLY don't mean it in a spiteful way, but.... Don't you think its a little childish to have the board shut down because you don't like that some of us are not as optimistic as you? |
| #23bladerockFeb 20, 2010 1:35:47 | Overreaction much? i like hanging out here, it has a higher maturity level than 90% of the wizards boards... where will i go if you close this place? WHERE? Also, i roleplay D20 modern at this same site, it's kinda convenient not to have to go elsewhere to check up on stuff. Meh, first they redesign the forum into this crapfest and now this? What? did i kill a cow in india in a past life? lord, i just found a place to hang out at and it's going away! *hyper ventilates* Or well, it's no longer going away, it would seem... i'm confused. |
| #24atomic_dogFeb 20, 2010 3:44:23 | Who gives a flump whether or not WotC make a new edition of Modern? To be perfectly honest I don't particularly want them to. I already have all the books I need, everything else has come from the community. Modern is generic, I can adapt the core book to fit whatever setting I like. With Past and Future I have toolsets for either side of the present day, and the Menace Manual has extra creatures and NPC archetypes. And Urban Arcana satisfies my high fantasy fix. Beyond that all my resources come from here. I have a whole folder of bookmarks on my iPhone of houserule and variant rule threads from this forum, and I'm always lurking in wait for more. And when I've finished my homebrew setting, I'll share it here as well. Just because I don't think or care that WotC will support the Modern line doesn't mean this forum is dead and redundant. And I concur that this threat is a little immature. |
| #25theguernFeb 20, 2010 5:53:11 | Guern- Thats kind of you to say backstabbist, but as far as this community goes I have consistently taken from it and not given back. This is the internet so I'm kinda ok with doing that, but if I haven't got involved in the making I don't think i can opine on the breaking. TheGuern |

I ask becuase this being a very semi tight knit community, I don't recgionzie either one of your names unless you both had pervious names that got lost during the forum migration |
| #27backstabbistFeb 20, 2010 11:28:29 | Burn it down. Burn it, then crater the scortch mark. Then salt the crater and nuke it to glass the salt... you know, just in case |
| #28shinobi_guyverFeb 20, 2010 11:38:51 | I know I don't post much, and I try to help when I do, but these forums are a great resource that shouldn't be lost. If they must go (and all things do eventually), then they should be moved to the Legacy Forums area and archived. And after saying this, I just remembered I need to get back with Master_Vega about his D20 project. >.> |
| #29bladerockFeb 20, 2010 11:41:14 | who are both of you? I am a physical manifestation of all your sins. :P No, i didn't have a different username before, look at my join date, it's pre-forum death. I used to spend all of my time in the d20 modern play-by-post, rather than the discussion boards (we used to have so many sub-boards back then.) Then, i left around the time when the gleemax boards where revealed by Wizards themselves to be pointless and the message boards got their facelift.... which sucked and still sucks. I returned about a month ago, mostly because i've been without a playgroup for a long time, and after looking around i found the d20 modern PbP group (Shameless plug, click right now!), which replaces the old board. I've been hanging there mostly. |

| #32backstabbistFeb 20, 2010 22:29:32 | Wont happen? We ( that meaning 80% TrappedSlider + 20% Modern oldtimers) had to fight to keep them open. Ask d20Future, d20Apoc, d20UrbArc how that fight to keep the forums turned out |
| #33windmanFeb 20, 2010 23:05:25 | Nope, won't happen. Wizards is too big right now to close their forums for those who don't like it. It's political marketing. |
| #34bladerockFeb 20, 2010 23:21:37 |
I am... ![]() Dun, dun, DUN! |
| #35bone_nagaFeb 21, 2010 14:33:32 | So because some people have acknowledged that WotC is not likely to support the d20 modern line anymore means we can't have a forum? They aren't going back to OD&D, 1e, 2e, or 3.x, but those guys still have their forum. So what if activity is down? That doesn't make this place useless or meaningless. And down isn't the same as dead. If we went months without a single post, I'd see your point. As is, not so much. Even having moved on to later systems (like Neurospasta, hopefully trying out CyberDave's work soon, and maybe e20 if it gets off the ground), I still enjoy discussion of d20M, and sometimes points and ideas from one system can be migrated to another. And its not like this forum is using up all WotC's server space or bandwidth or anything. There's really no reason right now not to keep it open. Just my 2 cents. |
| #36trappedsliderFeb 21, 2010 16:46:17 | Wont happen? I think it was more 90% me 10% others and I had to give up those forums due to low numbers |
| #37gmanv2Mar 06, 2010 14:17:56 | Its the over all reaction that bugs me the whole feeling that evceryone but me has given up on the hope that WotC will make another d20 modern Just saying I was a tad bit grumpy to realize you were trying to troll or something there, :/. With that said, this goes nowhere hopefully. I'll try to post more...:D |
| #38the_enemyMar 10, 2010 16:06:36 | All I have to say is that I just got here. Please do not close this forum. |
| #39james_cosperMar 11, 2010 15:59:41 | Hi, Please leave up a d20 Modern forum. I think a big part of the low traffic is the lack of a Modern link anywhere people can find it. When the link to the Modern site was removed from the Games section of the masthead and then the forums switched and all of the old bookmarks were wiped a lot of people probably assumed there were no longer Modern forums. I don't post much and when I do it is usually for a rules question. I check in to see what the Army Vs Romans and Resident Evil pages are developing and anytime an appropriate movie comes out. Our DM is unavailable for a couple of weeks so I'm running a three-session Modern game and came in to brush up on the rules. It was a great resource to have the faq at the top of the forums. Thanks for all your work, James Cosper |
| #40james_cosperMar 11, 2010 16:05:55 | I just saw my post count and the day I joined the forums under my screen name. I think I first signed up because of Modern to post for a rules question. I even had a Bullet Points question. So, my post count is low but I come here for research when planning games and especially for house rules and home settings. There is a lot of great stuff on the SWSE forum but Modern had the greatest depth and breadth. And there were incredible resources like Crazy Ironstar's Used Car Lot. I think the current TOS are probably another factor for the lowered frequency of new topics. I'm worried this will happen with SWSE now that that line is coming to a close. Hopefully those forums will stay up as long as the Modern forum has been up. |
| #41narukagamiMar 12, 2010 4:14:59 | Don't worry about anything closing. Trapped may be the community rep but that doesn't give him any actual administrative or moderator powers. Plus remember, community reps aren't permenant, we can all just send emails stating that our rep is no longer representing the community... |
| #42schizoveenMar 12, 2010 7:30:42 | I'm a big Lurker here... really DO NOT wish to see this forum to be closed.... just an opinion... The topics are inspirational and to 1 or 2 posts per time is just enough to keep the creativity flowing. Killing the forums is killing History. D20 modern is part of this community just like a small bakery in a big city... we don't all want wallmart.. some of us like the smaller exclusive locations.. i like it here... |
| #43FallensbaneMar 12, 2010 11:53:35 | I don't think anyone here has the right to suggest that this forum be closed down. Plenty of people use this forum, there is a large wealth of knowledge here that will help many new players as well as help veteran players. Currently I mostly lurk, I use to post alot on various forums here under a couple different ID's (Awhile back when the Walmart Post Apoc thread was popular). As far as wizards making a new D20 Modern down the line. I Fully expect it to happen, but I am not sure it will interest me much if it is based fully on 4E. Originally I was very optimistic about 4E, but after a few months of playing I found I was missing the previous system so i went back. But, this is really a topic for a different forum. Currently I am working on a Pathfinderized Version of D20 Modern/Future, It will incorporate much of the new pathfinder system as well as the Star Wars Wounds/Vitality system and a Modified 4E Minon system for larger number battles. More than likely I will start a thread down the line to get some feedback on it, which will require these forums to be around ![]() |

Plus remember, community reps aren't permenant, we can all just send emails stating that our rep is no longer representing the community... Before you stab me in the back I'd like to point out that nothing is going to happen at all AFAIK about the forums. And I'm not so much as a community rep as the one of the few folks here who deal with Community managment. |
| #45backstabbistMar 12, 2010 12:45:39 | Fallen- There USED to be a wealth on info here, 'here' being the d20Modern, d20Future, d20Apoc, Cyber, & somewhat the UrbArc ... now they're not there Sure much has been preserverd by old timers saving it in the PreGlee days, but a TON was lost we we lost the Future forum I vote for Trappedslider as King of the Lab Forum |
| #46TheRealOrionMar 12, 2010 14:18:33 | It is sad that so much was lost, but that just makes it all the more important that we keep what's been preserved. My impression, and please tell me if I'm being presumptuous Trap, is that a few posts by a few of us (mainly me, perhaps?) made it seem like we were actually opposed to Wizards entirely and Trap felt frustrated by that attitude. We've already talked it out and I think that we've clarified what I and others were trying to say, and we've stated quite clearly that we don't want this forum to disappear, but rather than there are places on-line where we can have a different kind of discussion than this forum allows. Thankfully, the web is a big, big place, so there's lot of room for all of us. |

Fallen- I didn't know you could vote for king..... |
| #48TheRealOrionMar 12, 2010 18:04:55 | [history nerd] Actually, there were many places where you could vote for king! It wasn't a practise of either the French, who eventually had absolute monarchies, or the English, whose royal power was eventually pushed out by the parliaments that they (ironically) got from the French. The Poles and Danes, however, did actually vote for their kings for quite a while. Only members of the court could be king, and only those same court members could vote, but the succession was not strictly father-to-son. For example, in Hamlet (Act 4 Scene 1, I think), "the people" call for Laertes to be elected king. This scene is probably Shakespeare's misunderstanding of Danish succession, but it does show that the concept was known by the early-modern period (i.e, the Renaissance). [/history nerd] And knowing is half the battle... |
| #49rustam1Mar 12, 2010 18:17:44 | Fallen- Where did the info go that was on those forums (d20 Future, Urban Arcana, etc.)?? Was there just so much data on the servers that they just had to dump it instead of pushing it to archive storage? |
| #50trappedsliderMar 12, 2010 22:47:56 | Fallen- they had to cut forums due to lower numbers when they switched to gleemax, but before they switched to the new software, and currently the archives aren't funcitonial. The only stop that got brought over was stuff that was marked Do not archive. And as some will argee it was by my work along with a few others that we still have this forum... |
| #51the_enemyMar 12, 2010 23:15:16 | Well, I am glad that this forum is here. It is THE best resource, bar none, that I have found for D20. Without it I would probably not be playing it, and on that note, I have started my first dice-rolling RP a couple days ago, and it is with D20 Modern with a few house rules taken directly from this forum. Even if it gets closed down, it needs to be archived simply for the treasure trove it is for anyone who wants to play D20 Modern. |

| #57rustam1Mar 15, 2010 9:41:11 | I really REALLY miss the Things That Go Boom thread okay. gentlebeings attend, it's about the information, access to the information, so we don't have to remember. this is the point, being able to tap into the knowledge base keeps us from having to reinvent the wheel. every time a knowledge base is deleted, it's like burning the last copies of an old book. preserving and storing the originals is fine but removing all access totally without providing digital access is just almost as bad as destroying it. re-establish access to the knowledge base if possible or tell us we have to to go reinvent the wheel example of providing access to the knowledge base: gutenberg project |
| #58WebsterMar 16, 2010 2:50:23 | Well.... I'd rather keep this forum around a while longer- The point of my posting about the Gamma World game was to show that something other than D&D could be done with the 4e d20 system- and it's possible there's a Modern game in the works. (Don't quote me though. :D) I'd hate to shut it all down only to have to re-open it. |
