As you all may very well know, UnCon (the Wizards of the Coast online convention) is coming soon.

As part of the festivities, I've agreed to host and judge a D20 Modern character creation contest. The winner(s) will receive a Fabulous Prize (TM)*, the recognition of his or her peers, and a general sense of awesomenes.

Rules:

1.System used will be point buy 28 points
2. Only the core book is to be used
3. The theme of the character must fit in with a Shadow chaser's game
4 Character level will be 10

Characters submitted will be judged on a scale from 0 to 25, with points coming from three categories.

 • Originality (0-5):

 • Fluff (0-10): Each entry should describe the character (IE bobby started on the path back when blah blah..sue got her gear from her grandma blah blah)

 • Balance and Role Fulfillment (0-10): Each entry should clearly state the character’s intended role and his or her stats should support that role.

The entry with the most points at the end of the day wins. Tie breakers, if required**, will be the three categories, in order

[i]* Fabulous Prize (TM) to be determined by UnCon staff, and may not actually exist. Still, bragging rights are worth something, right? In fact, we might get more than one prize to award. More information to follow.

Clarifications

How many times can I enter?
You can submit as many entries as you'd like. (When the time comes, please separate them into separate posts.) However, when it comes time to determine the winner (and especially if multiple winners are allowed), only your best entry will be used.
What about pictures? Can I include them?
Pictures of your character are perfectly acceptable to include in your entry. If the picture is your own work, it will be reflected favorably in the "Fluff" category. Moreover, if it's your own rendition of your own character design, it'll also be reflected favorably in the "Originality" category. You can certainly use someone else's picture as an inspiration, but due credit to the artist should be given, and you shouldn't expect any bonus points for having one. Pictures of your character should be considered a nice-to-have and certainly not a requirement.
Sounds great! What's the due date?

By the way, I think it's cool that this forum is still active, and this contest is just the sort of thing to keep it that way. It shows that powers-that-be still care about this community.

By Core, you mean the d20 Modern Rulebook, right? Not d20 Future, Past, Apoc, etc...

Alrighty then. Time to begin work...

Do you want us to post the character image here, or simply link it?

Also, if a concept is not defined in core, can we still include that concept employing existing races/classes/occupations/feats? (So long as it fits Shadowchasers of course.)

Not trying to sound stupid but what do you mean by:
"3. The theme of the character must fit in with a Shadow chaser's game"

So far, with just two competitors, it's looking pretty good, at least, from my perspective. Of course, I can't stop making new characters. I'll probably come up with two or three today.

I have my character's background just about finished (I'll finalize it after stats). I'll try and actually stat him up today when I get back from work.

Great stuff so far... and holy crap, Nobodez! Did you use a character creation program for that, or just type it all down into a template each time you wanted to make a character?

Actually, I did those all from scratch though I looked at the existing entry for Liam, but each time I typed it up fresh. Which is why I kept forgetting Simple Weapons Proficiency. I did all my work on paper first, then added up all the skills, feats, and talents, and figured out the interactions. Then, I put the rest of it together.

And I'll have the Vignette for Aleksander and the Stats for Johanna up later tonight.

Okay, so I'm late... I'll have stats for my entry posted up tomorrow sometime... I promise. :P

Idea for "prize" - someone runs a game for us to play our own (favorite) entries from the submission thread? :D ;)

Just a thought...

Wait, which one would I want to play? One of the Scoobies would be interesting, as would the combat lockdown ability of Johanna's Frightful Presence and React First. They're like children, how could I pick a favorite?

Forgive me but, CTs or CAs? I only woke up a few minutes ago, so maybe that's the reason they aren't ringing any bells...

Roll a die? :D

You might want to pick whichever one goes with the rest of the party best, or fills in the slot that you think isn't covered enough... or the one you just feel like playing at the moment. :P
That is assuming someone actually runs the game.

Understood.

One last question before I finalize my character:

For health and wealth rolls, do we simply take the average, or roll them and link to all rolls?

That's not exactly what I meant, but it seems everyone else rolled for their wealth and HP, so I'll do the same.

Anyhow, so I lied about my submission. I'll have it in tonight or tomorrow (or not at all, since the contest ends tomorrow. :P) I'm a bit lazy when it comes to purchasing equipment for some odd reason.

it ends tomorrow night at 11:59 pm...and heres a hint that i think i tossed out..may have been subtle it was hidden in a part of the rules..but your character need not to have purchased your gear...may have been handed down or something like that....as long as its reasonable...unless you can some how rational explain why anybody would have a thermal nuclear device in their house and get away with it...

sue got her gear from her grandma

Finally finished. Please tell me if the story is a bit too farfetched for the contest. I'll alter or withdraw it if it is.
Note: Yes, his origins, as well as the interruption, are intended to be humorous.

Thanks!

I wouldn't be against it. It'd be a good way to keep the community active. Other contests (class/feat creation?) could be fun, too.

Okay, since it's come up, there are rules for how Wealth for higher level characters is generated. It's from a March 2003 Bullet Points article, which can be found here.

I guess you could skip the holiday theme and have us make Urban Arcana heroes.

That would be fun. Especially since UA has a lot more Advanced classes to have fun with. Heck, we could do Agents of PSI after that, to round out the core campaign settings.

Heck, with the number of campaign settings in the books (three in Core, three in Past, one in D*M, eight in Future, three in Apocalypse, and one [with three additional sub-campaigns] in Cyberscape) that's two years right there.

Urban Arcana (or the stuff we'll be using from it) is in the MSRD, so you know.

If you have a problem with using the MSRD, that's fine, but I thought I'd put the information out there.

On another note: I'd encourage you to pick up D*M. It has a smaller amount of crunch than the rest of the Modern line, but the fluff in there can be applied to any sort of conspiracy campaign. It's a lot of fun... and the cover glows in the dark. :D
