Dec 14, 2008 10:33:46 I'm wanting to run a D20 Modern/Future game, but I don't like the whole idea of the wealth system. In my opinion regardless of your wealth you should end up poor if you spend your money haphazardly. Someone with a Wealth DC of 15, from my understanding can buy ANYTHING with a purchase DC of 15 or lower without losing any finances. My question is, does anyone know how to convert Wealth DC into actual cash? I'd appreciate any help!

Dec 14, 2008 18:26:55 Actually, buying anything with PDC 15 or higher will automatically drop you at least one point. But to address your question, there was a system in the D20 Modern Player's Companion, published by Green Ronin, where to find one's money you take their Wealth +10 and convert that to cash using the table on page 204 of the CRB. However, even the authors don't recommend this, as it opens up cans of worms that are better left closed.

Not all of these things will come into play, but I guarantee a player will want to whip out a credit card to buy that spiffy ubergun when they realize they don't have the money on hand.

The wealth system is not perfect, far from it, but there are reasons they didn't go with a cash system. Of all the possible alternatives, counting money is probably your worst option.

Unless you like the sound of "d20 Accounting," of course :P.

Wait, wasn't that the first two years of Living Greyhawk? (or at least, Year Two and the Adventure Certificates?)

I'm not sure if anyone played LG, but those first few years, before they perfected the Adventure Record system, were very difficult on those who had a problem with math.

Maybe take one Wealth score or more after a GM's 1d4 roll to see how long between payments

Dec 16, 2008 12:04:56 I work my games on a cash basis. My players prefer it. Plus it makes the awards/treasure more satisfying. I must have some greedy players (not really) and they like the idea of hiding their stash, building up reserves in multiple places (ala secret agent style), and having secret accounts. When they want to show off and blow some money, it lets them.

It adds level of fun if you have money, and a challenge when you don't. It works for us.

You can go on a cash basis as long as you don't all bogged down in too many details. We are plus +30 in age, so loans and investments are not that complicated to insert in game. If they don't understand them, then my players have bigger problems IRL.

One of my players wanted to invest in stocks. Sure why not?! Only at the beginning of each month I roll a d20, with 20 being +10%, 10 = 0%, and 1 being -10%. He likes it and it takes only a second to implement in the game. At first, his PC had grand ideas of being a financier on the side. Now, he uses it as his cover as he travels as he has made $$.

Dec 18, 2008 15:40:22 They do have their own hired NPC Accountant. Of course, the Accountant is his dream girl and the accountant staff, in how I described them for the party, is to die for. We have one female player, her PC's dream guy is also on the Accounting staff.

For some reason, the Accountants are just not into dating their clients no matter how much they try.
