| #1Master_VegaNov 23, 2008 13:46:26 | After making goodness knows how much stuff for D&D, I had a fun idea for d20Modern: Weapon Enthusiast Feats, a way to further specialize a character's fighting style. I just whipped these up this morning, so they probably aren't balanced with each other, or the rest of the game, yet. Any helpful suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated... as would some advice on what to do with the Assault Rifle Enthusiast feats. Anyhow, enjoy. Firearm Enthusiast feats: Shotgun Enthusiast Your prowess with the shotgun allows you to shoot from the hip and catch enemies off guard. Prerequisites: Personal Firearms Proficiency, Point-Blank Shot, Weapon Focus (any Shotgun), BAB+3 Benefit: You may fire your shotgun at an adjacent opponent without provoking an attack of opportunity. In addition, your shotgun gains a threat-range of five feet, allowing you to fire as an attack of opportunity. Reflexive Specialist The quickness with which you target and fire upon foes makes you a terrible target for charges and melee advances. Prerequisites: Personal Firearms Proficiency, Point-Blank Shot, Shotgun Enthusiast, Weapon Focus (Shotgun), BAB+9 Benefit: Your shotgun's threatening range increases to 10ft. Small Pistol Enthusiast Experience with twin-gun fighting has honed your accuracy with both weapons. Prerequisites: Personal Firearms Proficiency, Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Focus (small pistol), BAB+3 Benefits: When two-weapon fighting with your light pistol in your offhand, reduce the penalties for two-weapon fighting by 1 (thus to -1/-1) Twin-Weapon Specialist Your accuracy with two pistols becomes incredible. You fire each as though you were only using a single gun. Prerequisites: Personal Firearms Proficiency, Small Pistol Enthusiast, Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Focus (any small pistol), BAB+9 Benefit: When two-weapon fighting with your light pistol in your offhand, reduce the penalties for two-weapon fighting by an additional 1 (thus to 0/0) Medium Pistol Enthusiast One big pistol is enough for you, because as many bullets as those gunslingers might pump out, you still have accuracy and power they cannot match. Prerequisites: Personal Firearms Proficiency, Point Blank Shot, Weapon Focus (medium pistol), BAB+3 Benefit: When firing only your medium pistol, you gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls. Single-Gun Specialist Your skill with medium pistols grants you quicker reaction time, and even sharper aim. Prerequisites: Medium Pistol Enthusiast, Personal Firearms Proficiency, Point Blank Shot, Weapon Focus (medium pistol), BAB+9 Benefit: When holding your medium pistol (and no other weapon), you gain an additional +1 to attack and damage rolls, and a +1 bonus to initiative. Long Rifle Enthusiast Your expertise with the rifle, and knowledge of critical locations, increase the lethality of your shot. Prerequisites: Long Shot, Personal Firearms Proficiency, Weapon Focus (Long Rifle), BAB+3 Benefit: Increase the critical multiplier of your rifle by one (EX: X2 to X3). Long Range Specialist You can reliably target critical organs and nerves, so long as you set aside a little time to do so. Prerequisites: Long Rifle Enthusiast, Long Shot, Personal Firearms Proficiency, Weapon Focus (Long Rifle), BAB+9 Benefit: So long as it is the only attack you make during the round, any shot from your long rifle deals an extra 1d6 of ballistic damage. This extra die is not multiplied on a critical hit. Sub-Machine Gun Enthusiast You are incredibly quick and accurate with your sub-machine gun, allowing you to clear corners and rooms quickly. Prerequisites: Advanced Firearms Proficiency, Personal Firearms Proficiency, Weapon Focus (Sub-Machine Gun), BAB+3 Benefit: When using your SMG for autofire, increase the DC by 2, and the accuracy of any burst-fire attack is increased by +2 (note that you still must have the Burst Fire feat to make a burst-fire attack). Search and Destroy Specialist Your sharp reflexes and steady hand allow you to down multiple foes before even a single round is fired in return. Prerequisites: Advanced Firearms Proficiency, Personal Firearms Proficiency, Sub-Machine Gun Enthusiast, Weapon Focus (Sub-Machine Gun), BAB+9 Benefit: When using your SMG, you gain a +2 to initiative checks and may make a full-attack action during a surprise round. Assault Rifle Enthusiast (to be created) Flavor Prerequisites: Benefit: Second tier Assault Rifle Specialist Feat (to be created) Flavor Prerequisites: Benefit: Light Machine Gun Enthusiast Flavor Prerequisites: Advanced Firearms Proficiency, Personal Firearms Proficiency, Weapon Focus (Light Machine Gun), BAB+3 Benefit: When using your light machine gun for autofire, you may make the attack as a 30ft line. Lead Rain Specialist Flavor Prerequisites: Advanced Firearms Proficiency, Light Machine Gun Enthusiast, Personal Firearms Proficiency, Weapon Focus (Light Machine Gun), BAB+9 Benefit: When using your light machine gun for autofire, use 10 + your base attack bonus to determine the DC, instead of the normal method. Melee Weapon Enthusiast feats: Light Blade Enthusiast Flavor Prerequisites: Archaic Weapons Proficiency, Improved Initiative, Weapon Focus (any small Archaic or Exotic Slashing weapon), BAB+3 Benefit: Increase the critical threat range of your small Slashing weapon by +1. Special: This stacks with any Improved Critical ability, but does not apply to Keening effects. Precise-Strike Specialist Flavor Prerequisites: Archaic Weapons Proficiency, Improved Initiative, Weapon Focus (any small Archaic or Exotic Slashing weapon), BAB+9 Benefit: Deal your dexterity modifier in additional damage when using your small Slashing weapon. Medium Blade Enthusiast Flavor Prerequisites: Archaic Weapons Proficiency, Combat Reflexes, Weapon Focus (any medium-sized Archaic or Exotic Slashing weapon), BAB+3 Benefit: By expending an attack of opportunity, you may make one extra attack with your medium-sized Slashing weapon. This extra attack, as well as all of your attacks during your turn, take a -2 penalty. Quick-Strike Specialist Flavor Prerequisites: Archaic Weapons Proficiency, Combat Reflexes, Medium Weapon Enthusiast, Weapon Focus (Any medium-sized Archaic or Exotic Slashing weapon), BAB+9 Benefit: On a successful critical hit, you may make an additional attack with your medium Slashing weapon. You may only gain one extra attack in this way. Heavy Blade Enthusiast Flavor Prerequisites: Archaic Weapons Proficiency, Power Attack, Weapon Focus (any large-sized Archaic or Exotic Slashing weapon), BAB+3 Benefit: When calculating power attack damage to attacks made with your large Slashing weapon, you deal 2 extra damage for every 1 point of BAB sacrificed. Normal: You only deal 1 extra damage for every 1 point of BAB you sacrifice. Note: For those of you who implement the Power Attack from D&D3.5, this feat instead multiplies power attack damage by 1.5. This feat does not stack with other feats that increase power attack damage. Sweeping-Strike Specialist Flavor Prerequisites: Archaic Weapons Proficiency, Heavy Blade Specialist, Power Attack, Weapon Focus (any large-sized Archaic or Exotic melee weapon), BAB+9 Benefit: You may choose to make melee attacks with your large Slashing weapon as area attacks affecting three adjacent squares, which are also adjacent to each other. The Reflex DC for half damage from these attacks is equal to five plus your base attack bonus. Other Weapon Enthusiast feats: More to come. |
| #2tema69Nov 23, 2008 15:03:20 | Great ideas, Master Vega, I'll get back to this ASAP. Edit: As for Assault Rifle Enthousiast, how about not triggering AoOs from adjacent foes when firing. Also, it could give the user +1 or +2 to Double Tap and/or Burst Fire, provided of course that the user has the necessary feat. I'm still thinking on what to do with the 2nd Tier AR Enthousiast... |
| #3Master_VegaNov 23, 2008 20:43:36 | Thanks for the reply. Hmm... that sounds like a suitable bonus for the first feat to grant. As for the second feat, I keep on getting images of my CoD4 games (where, along with L4D, I got the inspiration for several of these), where ARs are a good compromise between sniper rifles and SMGs. They have precision just slightly less than the former, and allow for reaction only slightly slower than the latter. Should the second feat reflect that? Edit: and a question I forgot to post in the OP. Should I add melee weapon Enthusiast feats, or just keep it to firearms? |
| #4shinobi_guyverNov 24, 2008 5:58:05 | Edit: and a question I forgot to post in the OP. Should I add melee weapon Enthusiast feats, or just keep it to firearms? Melee Enthusiast feats sound like a good idea. Maybe we could get a couple that deal with improvised weapons? |
| #5tema69Nov 24, 2008 9:06:34 | Yea, I was looking at what assault rifles really are meant to do, and that is bridge the gap between SMGs and full-powered rifles.. So a CQB, versatility, and a bit of range sounds good. How would you suggest giving the AR that extra punch? And yea, sure, do post the melee weapon enthousiast feats. |
| #6korik1Nov 24, 2008 9:37:31 | It might sound overly simplified but why not have the AR Enthusiast feat the same as either the first tier of the SMG Enthusiast or the Rifle Enthusiast, and then have the second tier as the second tier feat of the opposite? If something completely original is designed, I think the first tier should extend the range increment of the AR with a bonus to hit, and the second should increase the damage or possibly increase the effectiveness of burst fire. Also, my thoughts about the other feats. They're all good except for the issues I'm about to make. The Long Rifle Specialist I think should increase the threat range of the rifle so as to build on the first tier feat. That way it makes it more deadly while simultaneously representing greater accuracy. I also think that the +1 initiative for the Single Gun Specialist is kind of out of place. I think that the additional bonuses to hit and damage stacking with the first tier feat are sufficient. Hope that helps. |
| #7Master_VegaNov 24, 2008 21:26:54 | Korik: I was considering making the SMG and long rifle feats allow for assault rifles, but the character must dedicate to one of them and is immediately disqualified for the other when he takes one. I suppose that doesn't represent flexibility, though... Perhaps the AR requirements should be steeper in requirements, and allow him to apply one full feat tree, as well as one half of the other, to his AR? Anyhow, I was thinking about making Long Range Specialist increase the rifle's crit range, but I wanted something more consistent. It still is based upon accuracy, but it isn't as reliant upon luck... and wouldn't get absurd (or invalid, depending on if it stacks or not) in combination with Soldier's Improved Critical class ability. I'll edit the changes into the OP when we've reached a decision. Anyhow, I added melee weapon enthusiast feats. Should I separate them into "slashing, bludgeoning, and piercing" enthusiast feats, giving different benefits to each? |
| #8tema69Nov 25, 2008 5:17:07 | Yea, I think the different damage types would work well as specialization. |
| #9Master_VegaNov 25, 2008 21:56:15 | Okay, I changed all of the feats to relate to slashing weapons, which they were originally designed for. I'll get to work on the other feats... though it'll be slow because I'm beginning a second project: changing up advanced classes to be more like base classes... but still just as devoted to an archetype if you choose them to be. You'll see when I post it. Anyhow, does anyone have any ideas for the bludgeoning/piercing Enthu-feats? |
| #10tema69Nov 26, 2008 5:43:26 | Uhh, I like the new feats. Two things bug me though: First, the Medium Blade Enthousiast seems a bit powerful. I'd say "instead of making any AoO this round, you may make an extra attack" or "expending an AoO, you may make an extra attack at [x] penalty to hit". Also, in Sweeping Strike Specialist, I'm assuming that "Heavy Weapon Specialist" is "Heavy Blade Enthousiast"? ...or did I miss the Heavy Weapon Specialist feat somewhere? Other than that, I'll think about the B/P Enthusiast feats, but I think many of the Piercing ones could be applied to Small Blade specialist feats, and the Bludgeoning could be applied to Heavy Blade specialist feats. I'm looking forward to see your AdC project. |
| #11Master_VegaNov 26, 2008 9:46:22 | No, it's Heavy Blade Enthusiast. I just missed it while editing. >> I'll fix that. Anyhow, HBE is one of the reasons I'm having a hard time making the bludgeoning and piercing feats. I wonder if I should just put those three feats back to the way they were, and then have one additional feat for slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning instead. Edit: Fixed the problems you brought up. Still working on the AdC project. I probably won't be finished until this weekend due to my holiday schedule. >> |
| #12tema69Nov 26, 2008 9:54:10 | I understand your point. How about this: Light Blade Enthusiast Have it be Light Slashing/Piercing/Bludgeoning instead, same benefits. Precise-Strike Specialist applies to Piercing & Slashing. Medium Blade Enthusiast call it Medium Piercing/Bludg/Slash instead. Quick-Strike Specialist applied to Slashing or Bludeoning perhaps? Heavy Blade Enthusiast I can see this being an all-rounder too. Have it be Heavy Slashing/Pierc/Bludg instead. Sweeping-Strike Specialist Applied to either Bludg or Slash. |
| #13Master_VegaNov 26, 2008 10:20:00 | I understand your point. How about this: Yeah. That looks about right. I just need to make some new feats to cover the places where piercing/bludgeoning are left out. |
| #14tema69Nov 26, 2008 10:57:40 | Yea. Two more Piercing and one more Bludgeoning feat would make 'em all balanced in numbers. |
| #15lord_of_the_ninth_02Nov 26, 2008 22:49:53 | These are fun. I think I'll introduce a few of them to my players next time I run a modern campaign. Nice way of making some of the often rather vanilla weapons seem distinct without creating balance problems. |
| #16Master_VegaNov 29, 2008 0:37:51 | Thanks, LotN. That's what I was trying for. It's good to know I hit the mark in the opinions of several people. Aaaanyhow, sorry for the lack of updates to this thread. I probably won't be able to get any crunchy things up here tonight, as I need to crash soon (work tomorrow morning, followed by a mad dash to a friend's wedding.) However, I will try to have the slashing/piercing feats, and some special ranged-weapon feats for non-firearms up by tomorrow night. |
