| #1body_electricFeb 27, 2008 15:26:15 | So, i'm currently the strong hero and probably the heavy bruiser on the current game i'm on. which is well and cool, even if I don't have as much outta combat skills, i'm the one saving the rest o' the groups butts in a fight and can take names/kick arse! However, I am looking at advanced classes for him... its a sci-fi-fantasy (sci-fantasy?), basically Star wars meets Final fantasy sorta deal, he's a sword user and pretty durn good with the high frequency blades. I was wondering how the helix warrior was as an adv class? I'm going with it by his backstory (A cliche story on how his scientist parents genetically manipulated him and callously left him as an orphan, standard video gamey stuff), so he'd be developing them soon enough. I was wondering though, any other advanced classes for a melee fighter that uses sowrds worth looking at? I know about soldier, but thats not the primary focus. Also, how is the helix warrior as a class for a melee fighter? Good? bad? |
| #2backstabbistFeb 27, 2008 17:16:24 | The Full BAB is nice, as is the Darkvision. But toys can make up for Darkvision, and the other things it can do are not that impressive. Tracer (cheesemonger) has Full BAB, plus . That can really put the smackdown on somebody fast when you start tossing on them extra d6s. Add the Ranger+2's and armor feats and you got a nice overpowered class to take.Martial Artists is another good one for MongoSmash types: Full BAB and ability to kill obscenely after claiming to surrender: TWF fists that do d8+ |
| #3Cyber-DaveFeb 28, 2008 9:58:29 | I always liked the Helix warrior. The characters "carrying bonuses" end up allowing a Helix to carry around a lot of toys. The other abilities are not bad, and having natural darkvision helps the character out when they are stuck in a scenario without toys. Another class that works out well for that type of character is the dreadnaught. Holding a large sized sword 1 handed? Yea... thats pretty bad ass. Their knockdown and steamroller style abilities are nice in melee as well. |
| #4tema69Feb 28, 2008 16:26:41 | I'd categorize it as mediocre. I'd go with the Dreadnought instead. |
| #5aothFeb 28, 2008 17:15:33 | What about the Field Officer? Aoth |
| #6farmboymdpMar 04, 2008 9:53:44 | I agree with Tema, Helix Warrior is pretty mediocre when compared to the Dreadnaught. As others have said, most of its abilities can be replicated in some other way, or are just lackluster compared to Ability Surge, great saves, and numerous direct combat bonuses. |
| #7tema69Mar 04, 2008 10:38:12 | @Farmboy: Exactly. @Aoth: Field Officer is pretty good, yeah. I had a character (I only got to play him for a few sessions though, due to our GM) who was Charismatic, Negotiator and Field Officer. When enemies were within close range, he could use his talk down and sow distrust, and at longer ranges, he could aid his allies with the inspiration stuff... It was actually a horribly overpowered build. |
| #8backstabbistMar 04, 2008 15:56:28 | Feild Officer is better for the noncombatant CHA guys to pump the MongoSmash. Mongo should not waste initiative on self-pumping while there are guys that need killing right over there. Look at what the FO does: He uses CHA to help others do stuff... he does the pumping rather than than doing. Just check the Leadership Diplomacy Check button in my sig for a FO pumping a guy picking a lock rather than shooting the lock off himself with a beltfed semi-auto bazookoid pistol ![]() |
| #9nodaishoMar 10, 2008 16:36:28 | All right... so why does the FO have a full BAB? Do some of his abilities depend on BAB? I am making a character right now, actually, going for a precision rifleman (backstory has him being a sport shooting competitor, what in depends on what rifle I end up giving him), and I think I will end up going for soldier, but I am still trying to find a class that shoots that has 1/1, since we already have someone going for tracer and I don't want to fall behind. I could do the Strong/Martial Artist, but that just makes me feel dirty, like if I were to dual-wield 5-7s with Miniaturized M2HBs integrated. |
| #10backstabbistMar 11, 2008 2:15:20 | First off, the comment about miniaturized 50BMGs: A) Never use miniaturized in you games B) Miniaturized should not apply to firearms C) Refer to A. If you still feel compelled to use miniaturized, - Helix Warrior for the BAB & Carry - Use a Gargantuan weapon that miniatures down to a Large.. like a 40mm Bofors, or mini one of the ParticleBeam guns off an AsaultShuttle down to a Large, cause with that 4000' Range Inc you wont have to worry about a bunch of -2's on your shots Remember, the pocket pistol mini-50BMG is cute, but the Bipod Mini-88Tankgun is more of a competition marksman tool Otherwise, I'd still go with Str/MA for the BAB and just grab FirearmProf & DTap ala carte. A marksman type would be more interested in Range Inc and power to do the job without hosing the place in lead. Take fewer shots but have them all hit, and have them all hurt. A Semi or even a Single would be fitting, but in as much as Arnie was doing fine with the 40mm m79, a future guy might want to use the miniaturized Break-Top Tankgun that would fit just like the m79 (but be way more killy-er) If your GM allows (& if he allows mini then he seems open minded), you migt want to use a heavy rifle version of the future guns. I extrapolated a rough table of standard gun classes and how the future weapons techs would fit in those classes: ![]() |
| #11belly120Mar 11, 2008 5:41:47 | to be honest its not that helix warrior is mediocore its that dreadnought is stupidly beardy. here have +8 to your str, that alone is madness. raging barbarians have a gradual build up in str boost but this class just crams it right up there. my favourite thing is the guys that wrote future still seem to think that in the future its all about melee. it makes me sad inside but future is just broke anyhow. |
| #12backstabbistMar 11, 2008 12:47:35 | yeah, what in Future classes helps you hit targets with guns(ray, particle, disintegration, etc), but there is plenty to make Mongo Smash Harder... even giant robot suits of armor to add +8Str to your Dreadnought +8Str (morale for silly stacking) while the corresponding Dex boost is... uh... Nope, gun guys seem to miss out on that +8Tohit and +8Damage, in that situation they get -1 for the mech size, and the McGuns in the future are not as good as the guns we have now (T-95 CAVALCADE joke gun) & Pop-up MiniPlasma is a miniature concealed version of a gun they dont have existing in non-miniature ... if the MiniConcealed plasmagun is that, where is the standard Plasmagun (not concealed pop-up) for large mechs? |
| #13belly120Mar 13, 2008 7:22:06 | argh! don't get me started the more i look at future the more stupid holes appear till it finishes up like a colinder. non scaling mech guns. loads of melee abuse the worlds most abusive gaget system non scaling ship weapons etc etc |
| #14backstabbistMar 13, 2008 11:42:38 | Ok, now that we've taken our obligatory shots at the holes, lets get back to the Classes. I recall an old saying, If Future classes are allowed, take Dreadnought & |
| #15nodaishoMar 14, 2008 1:42:17 | Yep, I have to agree with you there. Dreadnought can be nasty, and Tracer just has the ungodly BAB, range-capable sneak-attack, and favored enemy, even before tracking. I ended up going with the MA for the guy I mentioned, I wasn't actually able to use miniaturized M2s, I was saying that using Martial artist in a character that doesn't do martial arts seems about as bad as that, I want my characters to have reasons for their classes. Then I realized the obvious route: Have him have hand to hand training in character, he just prefers shooting to punching. |
| #16backstabbistMar 14, 2008 2:53:10 | Just say he needed to lose some weight, and spent the past 8 years taking TaeBo at the club. Now he jumps around & hums while he beats people up. |
| #17stigmatadorMar 15, 2008 9:34:15 | argh! don't get me started the more i look at future the more stupid holes appear till it finishes up like a colinder. You forgot a bunch of other reasons that have been discussed and houseruled(some rather well I should say). And Modern D20 suffers too. Which is why I am hurrying to end my D20 Future game and move on until the next edition comes around (if ever). Have a wonderful day! |
| #18strange_personMar 17, 2008 5:24:13 | Yeah, it's true you can get darkvision with goggles instead of a class ability, but when you're exploring some space hulk (which, obviously, has no interior lights) and an EMP takes out all the fancy gadgets that you didn't bother to get tempest-hardened, those innate abilities will start to look a lot better. |
| #19backstabbistMar 17, 2008 23:24:54 | Roadflares are for more than just melee combat. I am sure the rest of the party will enjoy game nights where they cant see anything so the Helix guy can feel usefull I'm not saying the Helix is worthless, buy we have to get into some pretty precise situations to make the guy shine, and it is more likely that choosing a different class & buying a sack of PDC 5-9 items is better than giving up the benefits of the other class and getting abilities that other guys just buy in addition to their class If you want to cast spells and see in the dark, take Mage & buy some goggles, incandescent-flashlight, and roadflares... roll for PDC 5 three times and subtract 0 Wealth. Or take Helix and just see in the dark but no casting If you want to build robots and see in the dark, take Techie & buy some goggles, incandescent-flashlight, and roadflares... roll for PDC 5 three times and subtract 0 Wealth. Or take Helix and just see in the dark but no robots I mean, who hasent used MuzzleFlash from a shorty-burst to see where they are going in a spooky FPS game? Besides, it is not like I am not goingto be in a envirosuit anyway whenever I am exploring some space hulk. And if the suit no longer is doing its things, I have bigger problem than not being able to see where I am dieing. "Cap, The hull looks intact. No signs of battle or boarding but scans show all their crew is dead." Very good Lt, lets assume it wasnt some kind of bio/chemo activity and snoop around breathing their air. |
| #20stigmatadorMar 18, 2008 11:39:34 | I mean, who hasent used MuzzleFlash from a shorty-burst to see where they are going in a spooky FPS game? ![]() How freaking true!!!! I am guility of that too! ![]() Have a wonderful day! |
