howdy partners, i am about to start up a western themed d20 modern campaign with a few slight personal modifications to the rules. However i have yet to hammer out a proper plot to help keep the players intrigued while they go along. so far i have come up with a few cliche parts but original ideas that fit within the realm of realism would be appreciated, so if u have any suggestions for me could you help me out and post em? thanks!

well, there is always the RailRoad... if it aint protecting the surveyors to bring the tracks thru your county, its shooting the torch gangs that are trying to burn you off your property to put the tracks thru your land. The railroad is a double edged sword, with a few extra edges on the sides and another behind the hilt that will slice you 9 ways from sunday.

You could have to deal with the sallon keep wanting to pack up & leave now that the sherrif was shot (again)... but if you put a new sherrif in he will want to close the *****house (and we aint gonna let that happen). There is the crooked Railroad Colonel that is trying to setup a doublecross of the crooked cattle colonel, and neither of them trusts the crooked mining colonel (hmmm, I believe even the schoolmarm is a colonel... every-frickin-body was a colonel back then)

You think you're in for days of liesure once you secure the Tequilla routes,
but then realize the injuns, zombies, and even the Bluebellies are raiding the Bourbon supply routes... and we know we aint gonna let that happen.

You ever wonder where all them cowboys and gunslingers got their powder & ammo?
I bet your players never considered that even something as simple as getting ammo could be a real pain back then in something happened to interupt the tradewagons.

You ever want to just run away, travel, and see the world?
Certainly the cheifs daughter would think that way, and what are the odds that she fall in with the PC party. Dont worry, I'm sure dad is an understanding guy and wont send his indian ninja hit squads after you

Remember, any technology level is a good time to run a "More Beer" campaign.
Just take the beer away fromthe party, and watch as they create the campaign to re-establish beer supply.

Building on the railroad idea, you could have one businessman hire some desperadoes who dress up like natives and attack a train or blow up some track; the heroes might be on the train when that happens. Perhaps the thieves also steal what they can after staging the attack. The heroes might recognize something unusual about the "natives," putting them at odds when the Army shows up to "deal with the thieving Injuns once and for all."

This could provide some good investigation, as the heroes track down the desperadoes through their fencing of the stolen goods, and could make for some good interaction with the victims, the thieves, the businessman who hired them, the Army officers, and any real natives who happen to be in the area.

Also, have you taken a look at Sidewinder: Recoiled from Dog House Rules? They did nice work on that product.

I've used this book for quite sometime in my western campaign, its quite useful, I suggest picking it up.
