| #1trappedsliderJun 21, 2009 18:36:05 | yes yes..bit me:P I'm going to fully work this out in this thread using jimmy the test subject jimmy's con is 16,so he has a mod of +3,so he is initially allowed a total number of 4 cybernetic implants. and he's taken the heir occupation ,so he will never go below 10 wealth. his current profession skill rank is 4,the max for a first level character. Jimmy buys a feat plexus taking up one of his allotments,he then installs the cybertaker feat, which allows me to have 5 implants. He then buys a skill plexus and fills it with skill profession implants, for a total boost of +8 to his 4 ranks in wealth. He then buys another cybtertaker implant, allowing him to buy another skill plexus which he fills with profession, bumping it up 16 ranks in profession he then does this cycle 10 more times, so he now has 40 to add to the 16 assuming that ever other time he bought implants were the cybertaker so,he now has a 56 ranks in profession at 1st level,so when he levels up to 2nd level and gets over the DC for his profession check when he levels up,which should easily done since his wealth is 10, he will have more wealth than a 20th level character. now if someone could find out exactly how much wealth jimmy has, they will get a cookie. |
| #2penchantJun 21, 2009 22:05:53 | I have a few issues with this. Getting ranks in Profession skill does not add to wealth, it only adds to the chance of gaining wealth when you level (of which, the maximum is +5 no matter how high you exceed the check). Also, the Skill Plexus is a DC 25 wealth check. He would have to roll a 15 on his initial wealth of 10 to make this check (I believe you can roll once per week) so it is not an automatic gimme, nor is each skill to be jacked into it. So after weeks and months of hardwiring in your cybernetic skills (in a PL7 setting) to get your profession (what profession BTW?) you are so skilled in it that you blow away the competition and get... +5 to your wealth. Now if you don't actually spend that money (you do still have to adventure to earn XP to continue to level, remember) you can build up your wealth by 5 per level. Of course, you also have a giant squid head from all the cyberware you have stuck in your noggin. I mean the Feat Plexus - Cybertaker combo is like a multitap for the wall outlet and you just have half a dozen plugged into each other, all to support your profession (cobblery?). Ah, the Diva Plava Laguna. I understand now. But no, you can't have the wealth of a 20th level character at 2nd level. Also, what happens if your cyberware actually takes any damage? You can lose the whole array If I'm reading the rules correctly. If you lose a plexus then you lose everything plugged into it, and so the whole christmas tree goes with it. Also, what happens if you lose the feat plexus that allows you to have all the extra implants but still have all the skill implants plugged in? still, its an interesting thought exercise. ![]() |

From the SRD : there is no limit to how high the Wealth bonus can climb. Every time a character gains a new level, make a Profession check. (If the character has no ranks in the skill, this check is a Wisdom check.) The DC is equal to the character's current Wealth bonus. If the character succeeds, his or her current Wealth bonus increases by +1. For every 5 points by which the character exceeds the DC, he or she gains an additional +1 to his or her Wealth bonus. I suggest reading up on the welath rules ;) so he has 56 ranks and a current wealth bonus of 10..so lets say he rolls a 15+ his 56=71 i'll let some one else finish this off... |
| #4backstabbistJun 21, 2009 23:32:27 | I remember the Profession chat from a few month back:So: Jimmy had Wealth10 and 56Profession, 15rolled +1 Wealth for making the check +12 check of 71 exceeded his wealth by 61 +11 56ranks Profession = Wealth 34 now, as was pointed out, Jimmy will have to have gathered some XP to make it to 2nd level, so would it be safe to assume he also gathered some +Wealth rewards and looting while gathering the XP? |
| #5penchantJun 21, 2009 23:45:50 | From the SRD : there is no limit to how high the Wealth bonus can climb. So the financial system collapses in PL7. I've already agreed that the cybernetics is totally broken. Yer still gots a squid head :P referring to some of the of the silliness with the Windfall feat plexus (bought up in some of the other related threads), what happens to the money you got if the implant is destroyed? If you lose a feat (through retraining or other means) you lose the benefits it gave you. You lose hitpoints if you lose Toughness, you gain reputation if you lose Low Profile. |
| #6trappedsliderJun 22, 2009 1:01:46 | I remember the Profession chat from a few month back: yeah, oddly enough jimmy big bucks could then repete the cycle before leveling up again... So the financial system collapses in PL7. I've already agreed that the cybernetics is totally broken. Yer still gots a squid head :P That i a good point, but if the wealth is spent how oculd you lose it if oyu lose the cybernetics? |
| #7penchantJun 22, 2009 10:02:15 | That i a good point, but if the wealth is spent how oculd you lose it if oyu lose the cybernetics? well, you either apply real world logic to the system or you don't, I guess. If you are following the rules because they are the rules, then it doesn't matter if they make sense. If you are trying to run a game, you don't get into the mess to begin with. Which occurs to me: Who here would actually try to use these wealth exploits in a real person's game? Who thinks they could get away with it? Just curious. |
| #8TheRealOrionJun 22, 2009 13:57:36 | When I was younger, I was the GM who let players get away with stupid things because (a) they were my friends and I didn't have the heart to tell them they were treating me like crap, and (b) they put the burden of proof on me, the GM, to tell them why they couldn't do the thing they were proposing. I have since grown out of this, but it's not an easy thing to deal with. We can solve the Feat Plexus problem by turning Windfall into something other than a feat. That's easy for me because the system I work with has "advantages" in it. It's harder if you're playing Future by the book, but then this thread is all about not playing by the book. The Skill implant seems harder to change given the rules involved, but I think Penchant makes a very good point. This stuff doesn't happen in the abstract, for the PCs. As a GM, it's your job to enforce the realistic consequences of some of these rule hacks. Of course, we have to do it in a good-natured way. It can't be perceived as punishment. Ideally, you should actually talk to your player and say, "Okay man, you found a loophole. I'm going to let it go this time, but I am going to enforce the consequences on your character. You get a huge Wealth boost, and I get to throw some good-natured abuse at you. Fair enough?" Of course, I think most in-game problems can be solved by talking to your players out-of-game. That, and finding players who aren't jerks. |
| #9DwarfFighterJun 22, 2009 14:50:36 | He then buys a skill plexus and fills it with skill profession implants, for a total boost of +8 to his 4 ranks in wealth. He then buys another cybtertaker implant, allowing him to buy another skill plexus which he fills with profession, bumping it up 16 ranks in profession he then does this cycle 10 more times, Skill Implants each provide a +2 competence bonus, which is a bonus that specifically does not stack. Also, I would be wary of allowing feats like Low Profile, Renown and Wind Fall to be taken as implants. Most feats empower the character within the game universe, while these feats make the game universe conform to the character. -DF |
| #10TheRealOrionJun 22, 2009 15:10:23 | Skill Implants each provide a +2 competence bonus, which is a bonus that specifically does not stack. Well, that would seem to put that discussion to bed. And I agree. There's no reason why there can't be an exception for a few Feats that just make no sense as Implants. |
