| #1killswitchxxxMar 01, 2009 8:21:44 | the retium virus has been around since the stone age it is the virus that reanimates and changes the human structure. although throughout time of medicine and knowledge or cures of the common cold the pill. zykengin which is a simple pill represses the human immune system to the retium virus which is now the most commonly used pill in the world. although the virus spreads faster and more efficient throughout the body with the virus. there are alot of mutations that happen. although zombies have been thought of as real and can be killed with headshots theses reborn humans are something different several headshots might just destroy the vile creature but it isn't guaranteed some die with a simple headshot some don't it depends on how the recipent deals with the virus. Although the infected due to tests communicate through grunts and primal noises. There is a cure but that is only given to our top scientists. But there is a natural immunity which is the non consummation of the product. The National guard and military are knowledgeable of the virus precautions are taken for the virus. The rate of infection is spreading at a rapid rate. There is no telling what would happen if its not controlled. There is a agent among at the incident we don"t know what he will pose as. What are your thoughts please comment. |
| #2killswitchxxxMar 01, 2009 9:13:44 | That is a basic story line to my campaign. I'm sorry if it wasn't the best i just woke up and posted that. but the pcs are in a city that is the worlds biggest city and its called hellsgate Arizona. there's 4.3 billion people in the city although the city is very very big so crowding isn't an issue. I know this is giant but i still would like your thoughts about this? |
| #3DwarfFighterMar 01, 2009 16:32:04 | Thoughts: You want a campaign where the PCs do little more than kill zombies. Also, my head hurts from your Ulysses-like exposé. Have you had a look at the Resident Evil thread? http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=364629 Other than that - what sort of input would you like? -DF |
| #4AnimeSniperMar 01, 2009 18:10:10 | Going from what you have, you could have the ancient virus be released at the following; 1. during construction of a new city/suburb the engineers uncover a cavern system with self contained cave ecosystem 2. digging deeper for diamonds at an african diamond mine the engineers release the virus. 3. an off-shore drilling operation pierces what is thought to be a new oil vein which contains the virus and after processing the inert virus is released at several locations throughout the world when the fuel is burned |
| #5malburMar 01, 2009 18:58:27 | I like this idea as it creates a zombie senario that does not have just a single type but a wide variety. If this is what you're going for (some fast, some slow, some resilient to damage, etc.) then one thing you might want to do is created a few specific categories underwhich they would function. I would think that some good ones would be: Slow: Your "average" zombie. These guys are straight out of horror movies and they are scariest in numbers. Not particularly fast but if you are not careful, they can get you. Tough: These guys are really hard to put down. Get them in a pack and you're in trouble. These could be slow and as a result they'll be able to catch up to you before they drop and as a result, they will be a bit more annoying. Probably best to keep them for higher levels. You could make it so a spot check would reveal they have skin that looks particularly thick and hide like. Fast: Seen in movies like 28 Days/Weeks later. They'll run at you and they're pretty damn fast. they don't worry about things like breathing, they'll just chase you until they catch you (or they lose your scent...). Scary as well as you can't outrun them on foot. Spot check shows they've got strong leg muscles or are wiry. Smart: Not in the normal sense of the word, but able to use rudimentary tools (clubs, limbs, etc.) these guys will pick up tools and use them to bash you to bits... so they can then eat you. Spot check is pretty simple, they got a weapon in their hands. Feral: These are the people that weren't killed outright. They're still alive but they're feral. Kinda a combo of fast and smart as they'll use tools if they can and they will be able to run. Heck, you could even make them smart enough to wear armor and able to talk! Just some possible ideas for templates! |
| #6AnimeSniperMar 01, 2009 19:33:23 | I like those as template ideas... bonuses for each corresponding ability. |
| #7killswitchxxxMar 02, 2009 10:00:25 | I really do like your templates for the zombies although. I have gotten alot of influence from games such as left 4 dead and dead rising. So i have nine types of zombies and counting. a living dead which is the slow but tough zombie. A "seaker" which when is killed or it sees the pc's it alerts the horde. Then the "infiltrator" which is a zombie that looks human and it is somewhat intellect. Then the "brain" which are smart zombies. then the "jumper" which is a hunter from l4d. "runners" well that explains itself. then latcher's that are like smokers from l4d and also exploders which are exploding zombies. and also a flyer which got mutated from a bird and the zombie grew wings and now can fly. what are your thoughts on this? I already have them stated but i was lazy to do all the typing of the stats |
| #8killswitchxxxMar 02, 2009 10:07:45 | Also i have a major plot event i skipped. In the beginning the pcs are invited to zykengens compound and they all were optionally asked to take this serum which was a "super solider" serum. which it was at first but when the zombies come they are not immune to the virus but they mutate from it and it could be bad or good and if there bit they have a less chance of survival and passing the dc for the virus. but if the pc didn't take the virus they are completely immune to the zombies but they are not physically altered like the other mutated pcs. In my game i have three possibly outcomes my campaign will end. the first is cure of the zombie infection, the second is the destruction of the zombies and the third is the control of the zombies. But also to talk about whats in my game there isn't only zombies and mutated humans there is also psychopaths and just messed up survivors from the outbreak which is everywhere. |
| #9malburMar 02, 2009 14:52:17 | I'm nut sure about the wide variety of zombies (at least for myself) but if you like them, go for it. I'm also a huge follower of The Tower chat which discusses how best to survive a zombie outbreak by getting to the "higher ground"... Also, are you planning to include other creatures that are typically found in zombie scenarios such as feral animals, crazed humans etc., or are you merely looking at the different types of zombies that you can put in the game? Also, how defendable is that compound the PCs were brought to? Is is able to be used to fight off zombie hordes or are you forcing them to constantly be on the run? |
| #10killswitchxxxMar 02, 2009 14:57:29 | The compound where they got the serum is blocked off by the company and if the pcs want they are able to choose a place for a home base but with creatures i might include feral animals and such maybe zombie animals. who knows where and what they will pick. |
| #11killswitchxxxMar 02, 2009 14:59:26 | and i would like anything from anyone about stats and ideas because i am a open idead person for my dnd games. Although im kinda new to dming |
| #12ironwolf85Mar 02, 2009 15:24:26 | unique types: unique types that may or maynot be subsets of the zombies already mentioned. Blueback: a riot officer that "reanimated" in full gear and named for the uniform, they are unaware that they are armored, but as a result their head and torso are well protected. A "smart" blueback will approach using it's shield for cover. Greenback: as with the riot officer these are reanimated military. Smart "greenbacks" can and DO use their guns (point and pull the trigger), not good shots obviously, but their military body armor makes them tough and slow unlike their blueback counterparts. Wheezer: an elderly old man whose tumors have blinded him, waits in the shadows perfectly still then jumps at noise tearing target to shreds. Search check to listen for him. does not respond to light only noises. Siren: once a beautiful woman now her blistered throat emits an ear piercing screech to attract other infected. Leaker: this one looks as if he was drowned, in reality all the water and slime dripping off him is actually clear infected fluids, this one is slow but highly infectious it can be identified by it's gurrgling moan. Brillant: these were charsmatic people in life, not intelligent though they can be, they are also known as "centers" "nexi" or "directors" they attract and direct hordlings they have no stratigy but they tend to have a lot of infected with them and attack the first PC they see, usally this guy is the zombie at the head of the running mob. |
| #13killswitchxxxMar 02, 2009 15:35:05 | that is Very Very good if its possible do you think you could get me stats for those types of zombies? |
| #14malburMar 02, 2009 17:37:03 | Wheezer: an elderly old man whose tumors have blinded him, waits in the shadows perfectly still then jumps at noise tearing target to shreds. Search check to listen for him. does not respond to light only noises. Uhh quick question... why not a "listen" check to hear them rather than search? sorry, i assume it was a simple mistake you made. |
| #15AnimeSniperMar 02, 2009 18:04:04 | Listen to hear him, Search/Spot to find him before throwing a molotov cocktail at him... but mistakes happen when A, your brain thinks what to type and B, you type it in the wrong order or manner. |
| #16malburMar 02, 2009 18:14:09 | Yeah I assumed that it was just a quick typing mistake ![]() |
| #17AnimeSniperMar 02, 2009 18:19:02 | Yeah, kind of like how Word doc doesn't catch the mistake of having 'form' instead of 'from' when you spellcheck...'He came form the Alpha Centauri system' stupid spellcheck and its lacking dictionary of words; pheromone recognized, pheromonal not recognized at first till you add itEdit: The RE thread has a system for deciding where a player hits his target when he makes a successful attack... uses one of the dice but can't remember. |
| #18ironwolf85Mar 03, 2009 12:54:44 | yeah, I'm not a stat man, I'm still learning the system but I have hundreds of ideas. time for bosses, they are mad humans who are smart enough to be a threat to your superpowered players. Babyface: a child genius who has devised a way to control his zombified mother. She is capable of blending into the background and attacks viciously with poisened claws. Quote: mommy wants to play.... Havok: a madman reveling in the lack of order and law, he has rigged an entire section of the city with explosives and would burn, slaughter, or blow to hell anyone who would dare try and restore order. He belives every single anti-government conspericy is true and belives everyone is out to "opress him" quote: "PROSECUTORS WILL BE TRANSGRESSICUTED." (spray paint when entering his terrority) Andrew: former philophy professor who sought refuge in Happy Harry's amusement part. he lost his mind now he fancies himself the ringmaster of a zombie circus, while this sounds comical, in reality being trapped in a zombie infected amusement park is not funny at all. especally when everything else is trying to kill you. Quote: "Ladies and Gentlemen! You've read about it in the papers! Now witness, before your very eyes, that most rare and tragic of nature's mistakes! I give you: the average man. Physically unremarkable, it instead possesses a deformed set of values. Notice the hideously bloated sense of humanity's importance. Also note the club-footed social conscience and the withered optimism. It's certainly not for the squeamish, is it? Most repulsive of all, are its frail and useless notions of order and sanity. If too much weight is placed upon them... they snap. How does it live, I hear you ask? How does this poor pathetic specimen survive in today's harsh and irrational environment? I'm afraid the sad answer is, "Not very well". Faced with the inescapable fact that human existence is mad, random, and pointless, one in eight of them crack up and go stark slavering buggo! Who can blame them? In a world as psychotic as this... any other response would be crazy!" |
| #19killswitchxxxMar 03, 2009 16:09:55 | ironwolf i really do appreciate your help to my game. Instead of these other people just mocking a simple mistake you made. But ill do the stats for those phycopaths but could you think of ideas because i really like these ideas? |
| #20malburMar 04, 2009 1:17:18 | ironwolf i really do appreciate your help to my game. Instead of these other people just mocking a simple mistake you made. But ill do the stats for those phycopaths but could you think of ideas because i really like these ideas? Wow, Sorry if it seemed like I was being overly mocking, I merely was saying it in a joking manner (unless he had a specific reason for choosing Search rather than Listen, who know's sometimes people have a reasoning for stuff like that)... I honestly did not mean to offend anyone at all. Other than this I am just curious if someone has a system to use for dealing damage particularly deciding when a headshot is scored... I ask because in a traditional zombie game I would think that the headshot is the best (but not the only [due to the constraints exhibited by the d20 system]) way of taking a zombie down... How do you plan to deal with this? Thoughts? |
| #21ironwolf85Mar 04, 2009 12:37:01 | so I work on the ideas? okay it's what I'm good at. now some allies and a few more psychopaths this time with a religous bent allies Omar Rakmardi: an elder member of the local muslim community who was opposed to violence, unfortnately pacifisim does not serve one well when surrounded by undead monsters. Rakmardi instead secluded himself in a mosque with a large stores of food and medical supplies. he offers shelter and safety to survivors of all religons. Quote: "sallam brothers, come to escape hell?" Father Gregori: a pastor that, like Omar, has held up in his place of worship and offers asylem. unlike Omar Gregori is no pacifist and though the refuses to kill the living, the dead are fair game. Gregori fights in a gurrilla style with an old WW2 Mosen Nagant (sniper rifile) he may not be frendly to the players at first and will attempt to drive them off, intentionally missing vital areas. quote: "yay though I walk through Lt. Ramsy: one of the surviving police officers he is holding up in a down town department store and running low on ammo he is an alcholic mounrning the loss of his men. He is assisted by Annete one of the only other survivors. Psychopaths: Police Chief Agustus Gram: Gram found his world falling apart and is attempting to resetablish law and order. Problem is that involves training the undead... Gram was an avid hunter before the outbreak and now uses trained zombies to hunt down "lawbreakers" letting them eat his kills. New Enemy: Grant's attack zombies: trained to hunt down humans by Grant and bring them back these fast moving zombies have an unnatural cunning, many are zombified officers. Yet they are still driven by their unnatural hunger so the "detainee" will probably have a few bites taken out of them when they arrive. they can be identified by the AG cattle brand on their forehead. Mayor Eastman: the african american mayor has barracaded himself inside city hall and is under the delousion he is still in charge signing and sending orders that pile up in the mail room. If the PCs choose to explore city hall then they will find him, he is armed will not respond kindly to them. boss zombies (I'm gonna get nasty): Hazzard: a zombie that had an industrial mishap and had all forms of nasty pipes, bars, blades, etc jammed into him. because they do not need those organs infected tissue has regrown around the bases of the scrap making this zombie able to throw the scrap and being able to cause extreme discomfort to survivors. he just wants a hug.... Breeder: Undead babies are nasty, especally when still in the womb. The mother is a nasty green infected with a bulging stomach. Because the child was infected in the fetal stage they developed into a black nasty thing. Nobody has actually seen it in the light but the large glowing eyes, acidic maw full of teeth, and large black tenticles is not enticing. |
| #22killswitchxxxMar 04, 2009 14:30:03 | I just like these more and more if you want to keep them coming!!! |
| #23killswitchxxxMar 04, 2009 14:32:42 | malbur its alright no offence taken but traditionally a zombie goes down with a headshot that is true although im not going for this traditional game here i have various kinds of zombies and they all die nearly simlair. like for example in the game left 4 dead they dont only die from a headshot a headshot just kills them in a hit. |
| #24malburMar 04, 2009 14:38:14 | Oh ok... see I'm just curious as I'm also thinking of a zombie game but am trying to piece together the dynamics for how best to deal with that... maybe if you score a hit you get to roll again to see if you get them in the head. 18-20 only or something Actually... that wouldn't be too bad, before making an attack, you say you're targetting a section of body (head, arms, legs, etc) and then if you succeed your attack role you can role again to confirm hitting that section of opponents body... if you don't, well you still hit at least. Sorry, just an idea i'm working through if you're interested feel free to take it... |
| #25killswitchxxxMar 04, 2009 15:27:03 | i am actually doing a call hit if the pc wants or a random shot roll which shows where they will hit im new to dming and i like a lot of ideas from people and my players and i put there things in perspective and fellow people on this site if you want to help me out with anything please do thank you. |
| #26malburMar 04, 2009 23:25:44 | Problem with random chance to hit based on percentage is that range also comes into play... as well as BAB... how do you determine what that percentage is at say 50 feet? 20? 5? See what i mean? |
| #27ironwolf85Mar 05, 2009 9:21:54 | distinct note on the Breeder: a headshot is totally ineffective it is the black thing in the stomach that drives this undead foward, though the head still moves. I had a brillant moment in my head just now. DM "a single female zombie is milling around the train yard" PC "shhhh probably a siren, let's kill it before it alerts the others" *sneaks up close* "DIE" rolls d20. DM "you put a bullet through her head, she does not fall, her stomach splits open a pair of glowing eyes glaring out at you, tenticles fly towards you" *makes check* "you are grappled... rows of sharp teeth gnash and drip with anticipation as you are dragged closer" PC "guys...help!" |
| #28kilrailMar 05, 2009 10:40:17 | Hey just read through the post, loving the ideas, just wanted to say good work and I might be using some of these in an upcomming short story/game that I will be writing and running at the same time, letting the players choose the course of the characters. Thought it might be an interesting idea. Anyways folks if yall need any ideas/help feel free to ask. |
| #29killswitchxxxMar 05, 2009 14:02:55 | malbur i have no clue really lol. |
| #30killswitchxxxMar 05, 2009 14:04:14 | ironwolf thats a good idea i will be using that as well does anyone want to know what my pcs are like occupation wise? |
| #31malburMar 05, 2009 18:31:36 | ironwolf thats a good idea i will be using that as well does anyone want to know what my pcs are like occupation wise? Oh yeah... that could be handy ... give us knowledge of what they'll be able to do and whether they can successfully build a fort or something... are you planning on having them run most of the time or what? |
| #32killswitchxxxMar 05, 2009 19:45:45 | well there's a free runner cop a scientist for the corp that makes the mutants and things, a Sargent and his three man squad but he will get a 12 man squad and i might let four or five live out of the 12, we have a secret agent that is posing as a student, a dirt bag mechanic, and a emo kid that is a genius at making stuff and knowing about traditional zombies. but i think that my players will find a base of operations i hope at least they might just be on the run all the time and they can get access to nukes if there good enough :D |
| #33ironwolf85Mar 06, 2009 11:41:31 | how about making the players reclaim the city block by block, claiming rewsources as they go? worse yet, the new and Improved Hazzards (the ones with metal beams and stuff sticking out of them) now come in an explosive varity called the shrapnel. Shrapnel are hazzards that have some form of explosive gas in them, most impaled by things like welder's pack, or had an explosive drum jammed into their back, they Explode when hit in the torso sending metal scrap flying in all directions |
| #34killswitchxxxMar 06, 2009 22:17:01 | Thats good i think ill do that if they decided to reclaim the city. |
| #35killswitchxxxMar 08, 2009 11:12:56 | I finally did my first game of my campaign. The pcs were stuck in a hospital and they worked there way out with a four marines and a drunk doctor. They grabbed all the medical technology and medicine they could then they went into a home depot and took metals and such then they went into a subway and barricaded a subway car for a mobile base till they know for a actual building. |
| #36ironwolf85Mar 16, 2009 17:34:25 | me again, as your campain goes on and some zombies consume more flesh (that they do not digest) I belive their stomachs may burst when struck. this is just a small nasty touch but one that could be useful. |
| #37killswitchxxxMar 24, 2009 9:08:30 | thanks ironwolf i always like your help to my game. But is there any other people who could do some ideas? |
| #38johannixxMar 24, 2009 21:17:10 | Long-term, zombie campaigns aren't about surviving the plague of zombies. They're about surviving the other survivors. Check out Cormac MacCarthy's "The Road". It's not a zombie book, but it is a very grim visualization of a total societal and environmental collapse. |
| #39malburMar 25, 2009 0:32:15 | Long-term, zombie campaigns aren't about surviving the plague of zombies. They're about surviving the other survivors. Check out Cormac MacCarthy's "The Road". It's not a zombie book, but it is a very grim visualization of a total societal and environmental collapse. I think that's a good point. Especially if you follow the Max Brooks version of zombies (they freeze in the winter if above the freeze line) then you have to worry about other human scavengers in the winter months coming along and trying to steal/pilfer anything they need from various stores/other strongholds etc. |
| #40killswitchxxxMar 27, 2009 17:31:41 | thanks for the help guys and i have read the road and its one of my favorite books. that's what mainly my game is about surviving not only the zombies but the people as well. |
| #41ironwolf85Apr 03, 2009 15:52:16 | The Farrd Family: the Farrds have been hunting zombies to survive (sterilizing the meat by cooking it) between the father, mother, and their two teenage sons they are a major threat. They have taken a liking to human flesh, not just the undead type |
| #42backstabbistApr 03, 2009 22:56:34 | if you travel the wastelands long enough sooner or latter wont you come across Judge Dredd's old boss, with his book & shotgun, as he brings the law to those that have it not? |
| #43malburApr 04, 2009 14:30:22 | How can you sterilize zombie flesh? I assumed that it was the standard zombie scenario where any contact with zombie stuff (blood, drool, whatever else they may have in 'em) would cause you to become infectedas well... Is this the case in your campaign or what? |
| #44johannixxApr 05, 2009 22:50:35 | if you travel the wastelands long enough No, that was me, sorry. |
| #45ironwolf85Apr 06, 2009 12:54:39 | How can you sterilize zombie flesh? all viruses and bacteria can be killed if you cook it long enough at a high enough temperature. that includes the zombie causing kind So it is possible to eat a zombie, just set your oven to 450 and cook for three hours. I bet the smell is nasty though |
| #46johannixxApr 06, 2009 19:56:37 | How can you sterilize zombie flesh? Depends on what causes the infection. If it's a simple chemical imbalance, cooking might not do the trick. You can't cook out ciguatera poisoning, for example. |
| #47atomic_dogApr 07, 2009 5:03:58 | And I don't really fancy eating rotting flesh, no matter how well cooked or sterilised it is! |
| #48malburApr 07, 2009 22:19:08 | Ahh see, I was going on the idea that zombie flesh was always toxic no matter what was done with it, that's the reason why they need to be destroyed and not to touch you... |
| #49ironwolf85Apr 23, 2009 14:55:24 | the disease is usually carried in the fluids isn't it? get rid of them, cook, safe. but of course it's nasty, that's why I had villans do it. |
| #50malburApr 24, 2009 1:39:44 | Hmm. I never thought it was contained just by the fluids, i understood it as the disease was in cells in general... the only reason it so often spreads by contact with bodily fluids is because it's a lot easier to get those put into your system than a hunk of flesh. The hunk of flesh you have to put there yourself (usually... i suppose villains could "feed" good heroes flesh) where as fluids can simply be splashed in your mouth, onto a wound or in a bodily orifice... |
