#1 dirtyfrank Jan 12, 2010 19:14:28	Yeah happened extremely recently and apparently has caused a butt ton of damage. From what I can gather there is little info about it as of now. From what I understand a good mental image would be to try and imagine a bunch of buildings on the ground. Then imagine after shocks and stuff. Also it's dark there right now and things like cell phones ain't working and it seems it's hard to get any info from there at this time and junk. Well I guess I better provide a [linky]. Discuss.

#3 zombie_babies Jan 13, 2010 9:00:53	You would if you lived in buildings of equal quality to those in Haiti.  Read some stuff this mornin'.  Guess the UN Peacekeeping mission HQ got destroyerated.  The lead Envoy is presumed dead - as is just about everyone else that was in that building.  Things there are bad.  Really, really bad.  Like the crappy hospitals they had are also detroyed bad.  Like schools were utterly destroyed bad (and they don't know if any kids were in 'em). Like the Palace was mostly leveled bad.  In other words, the sitch ain't good.

Which also means most likely no fresh water, and destroyed roadways. Which means getting supplies, necessary for sustaining a people aren't going to get there short of airlifts. This is a really bad situation.
#5 zombie_babies Jan 13, 2010 9:09:57	Yeah, the epicenter was off shore.  No tsunami is likely the only good news they're gonna have for a while.  The communications situation isn't totally bleak, however.  They are able to get calls in and out intermittantly and there's a Telecom Without Borders kind of organization that's gonna try to get them back up ASAP.  Aid is on the way.  Until it gets there and gets to work, however, it's gonna be rough.
#6 dirtyfrank Jan 13, 2010 13:59:10	As I understand it one of the bad things was that the earthquake caused some building to fall apart some but not all the way. Such as pieces fell off of buildings and into the streets so driving cars wasn't useful and people were afraid of going outside cuz if another after shock hit that meant you might get something on your head as well. To make things bad as well some buildings fell appart partially such as just a section falling so that it became hard to move throughout a building cuz ya might have a main hallway cut off. so yeah bad stuff.

Ohio gets earthquakes all the time, they tend to be mild however. Seismic activity is nothing to scoff at though. No place is completely safe from earthquakes and their effects (except orbital, space stations).

Now a question is, will this be like that tsunami thing where a majority of the aid comes from America but specifically money donated by good hard working Americans.

In other news, the current estimates for dead are about 50k.  The number missing, however, ranges anywhere from hundreds to thousands so I would expect that 50k to climb.  Aid is already onsite with the US taking the lead at the airport.  Still, they're very short on people to unload the planes and fuel for the planes, too.  At least they're moving in the right direction.
#14 dirtyfrank Jan 14, 2010 15:28:23	The voodoo seems legit to me. Just look at their recent history. Aristide gets elected in 91 or something. Almost immediately he is booted out of office. In 94 Clinton goes and forces him back into leading Haiti. Yay, we put someone in charge of a country when they country already revolted against them and won! Yay, we're winners. And so with US support he is able to lead without being booted out. Well he can't lead for two consecutive terms and so he had to wait before taking office again. Well he gets back in charge in 2000 with what was suspected as foul play. Oh, and he got revolted against again. Yeah not good stuff. Within about a 10 year period the nation of Haiti has had a revolution against the same guy twice. I wonder if we're going to put him back in office? See they are like totally cursed. If they didn't have voodoo on them then they probably would be able to get rid of this dude. As well as make their nation something other than a dump.

I think it's impossible.  The structure of the earth is quite large.  It contains a LOT of earth.  We simply don't have the capability, or otherwise the disaster would be Yellowstone. Nah, but I do know...what is hot. Probably quite a few but that's assuming that their corrupt government would have allowed it to be spent on infrastructure and such rather than just hoard the wealth given to them.

(It's actually called the 1999 Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act.)  Do I think he cares what I have to say?  Absolutely.  In any event, I also noted the Bill Gates  (yes, the wealthy M$N guy who corners markets, and also who doesn't want entire industries to collapse)...noted the Gates complaints about the so-called 'innovation' problems we have... Blacklight Power has serious backing.  This isn't some kind of multi-national effort, it's completely backed by  private investors. They aren't sure about the effects of the byproducts from the new process.  So while the patent office agonizes over the lack of academic support for the inventor's explanation of quantum physics; he's already gearing up for a power generation prototype, which...will release effluent, these so-called hydrinos, into our atmosphere.  That slightly alarms me, Mr. Gates.  This is getting harder to deny as crackpot chemistry. The 'un-sustainable' nuclear industry is going away.
