"DM Looking For Players Who Have No Life"- The Grouchy Mage Responds

Apr 07, 2009 19:25:38 Ever wonder what the heck people are thinking now a days? Just look at some of these posts in the D&D thread "Find Players In Your Area Here". You'd be surprised to see whats out there; I was.

I've decided to research random posts & I came across this one. Under "Canada", I had found a popular thread with many replies; "Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge, Ontario: 3.5 D&D". Please note, I have never met, nor responded to this group until now. What I am about to say is the rants of one "Grouchy Mage" & you may decide to take the liberties to agree or disagree with me. Actually, I encourage your views & opinions on the matter.

Ok, for those unfamiliar with this part of Canada (I needed to Google it), its north of Erie Pennsylvania/Lake Erie area. Just look on the map & travel north into Canada. Its beyond the Canadian city of Brantford. Now, reading this guy's post, I was quite pleased. This DM was truly experienced. Researching his profile and doing the math, this 37 yo had played when he was, at best 16 or 17. Reading what he added & boasts truly surprised me on how well he DM'ed.

Apr 07, 2009 19:52:48 Wow... talk about someone that has no life. I don't understand the point if you writing this post. Other than to randomly attack someone.

Since you felt obligated to share your opinion, I'll give you mine.

I agree wholeheartedly with Geoste with regard to making a commitment to a regular group. I DM a group of 5 players. When one doesn't show up regularly (i.e. misses every other game) it causes confusion amongst the players, and shows a total lack of respect for the entire group. I recently told a very good friend not to bother coming back to my game after he missed 3 weeks in a row without giving any explanation.

I DM quite often, and let me tell you that the primary reason I DM is because I enjoy challenging my players. I enjoy trying to best them each week. If I didn't enjoy it, I simply wouldn't do it.

In my regular group we alternate campaigns. I DM for a 2 month period, then we shelve that campaign, and one of the other group members runs his campaign for the next 2 months. As DM's, we both spend on average 4-8 hours every week preparing for a 4 hour game session. I think that gives me, as a DM, the right to demand a certain level of respect from my players.
