Anyone else a fan?
2011 appears to be a great year for fantasy on both the big screen and the little screen. The Hobbit part 1 in theaters in December 2011 and the pilot to GRRM's Game of Thrones on HBO. I just might get HBO to see this event.
The Hobbit part 1?! They're splitting that up into two movies? Oh deary...
They have to; the book itself is far too long and has far too much going on to pare it down to two to three hours. My only question is where they'll break it off: Rivendell, Moria, or the Woodland Realm.

I'm really anticipating Game of Thrones. The first time I read those books, I immediately imagined Eddard Stark as Sean Bean, and lo and behold they cast Sean Bean in the part. That seemed like a good sign.
This seems like a relatively awesome year for D&D-flavored cinema to me... Clash of the Titans, Eagle of the Ninth, Ironclad, Dawn of War, Robin Hood, Your Highness, Valhalla Rising, The Black Death, and Centurion! That's a trend I can get behind. Enough of this superhero nonsense.

The page count is about half of what each Lord of the Rings books were.
I loved the story as a kid, but two movies for one 300-pages book is dumb.
It's not an epic saga like LOTR was, it's just a bedtime story really.

Where the Wild Things Are was a 12 page picture book but they managed to make it a 2 hour movie.
The Hobbit may only be 300 pages, but there's a lot packed into it, and I'd much rather they take the time to tell the story right than to try to cram it all into 2 hours. Plus there are a number of action pieces to fill each half and which can serve as a natural break point to divide it (I think they'll end the first half with the party reaching Lake Town).
If they have to cut anything I hope it's Beorn. He's nowhere near an insufferable as Tom Bombadil but it is an unnecessarily long interlude that doesn't serve to really further the narrative. They might be able to lose the spiders, too, if only to avoid repeating the Shelob scene from LotR.
People complained about cutting Tom Bombadil out of the movies... But the only way to portray Tom in a reasonable way is to have Robin Williams in wires singing and hopping from hilltop to hilltop.
But Game of Thrones! The elegant counter point to Terry Pratchet who says serious things in a silly way is GRRM who says silly things in a serious way.
I eagerly await to see who will be playing the Hound.

Fixed. I know many Tolkien fans, me among them, who were glad to see his excised.

There is no reasonable way to portray Tom Bombadil. And am I the only person who thinks Robin William hasn't been funny in a very long time?

QFT and hopefully this time he does not kill more characters I like lol. I'm just afraid that there are so many interconnected plots in the series that hollywood will wind up cutting some of them and cause the whole thing to fail.
