Could anyone comment on the state of things in the D&D wolrd, which diety is allied with who, what demons are on top, info on the nine hells, how forgotten realms and ebberon fit into things, etc.
I'm currently writing a campaign where Tiamat annd Lolth ally (rounding up and obtaining the help of Orcus and Yeenoghu with promises of dietification and carnage respectively) to take Celestia from Bahamut, Moradin and Kord (along with Lolth's good aligned daughter whose name I cant remeber right now.) I'm drawing from forgotten realms shamelessly but I'm basing it in the default setting.
That said I'd like to know more so I can have a general idea of the relationships between the higher powers.

However, I will have to give you just a little history of the game.
In all editions the game was created to be played in a world of the players'/DM's creation.
However, prior to 4th edition, the 'core' deities and material was based upon a setting known as the World of Greyhawk.
Wikipedia has a section dedicated to it at this site:

There are other settings such as Forgotten_Realms and Eberron
However, with the coming of 4th edition, Wizards no longer supports a variety of settings the way they did before.
The modules are mostly not placed in a particular setting and those that are can easily be placed anywhere.
If you would want lore related to the deities in the 4th edition PHB, there should be some in the Greyhawk entry of Wikipedia listed above.
However, Bane is a Forgotten Realms deity that was added to the collection of deities that was originally the pantheon of Greyhawk. Also, Bane is not the only one.
Since no new sourcebooks related to the D&D setting containing these deities is coming out (by sourcebooks I mean those filled with lore as opposed to game mechanics: powers, monsters, feats, etc.) the old relations may not be valid since the pantheon has changed so much.
For instance, Lolth was at first a lesser goddess in Greyhawk. Then she became a greater power in the Forgotten Realms. Now, I believe she is a greater power in the new pantheon, but it is not actually placed in a world.

There is a lot of material to the old Greyhawk setting out there, but mine is buried in a box somewhere and I don't know which one. Sorry. If you need more info, perhaps someone else will have it handy.
