As this will be my last night on the forums, I would like to say goodbye to those that i have shared conversations with, debated topics with, and had an overall good time talking with. Trailfoot, thecasualoblivion, and many, many others have made these forums tolerable for me...until now. Thanks to too much trolling, flaming, and overall ignorant comments from the few that have no idea how to behave in public, I no longer find any real joy in coming here. Perhaps this is their plan: to run off the pro-4E'ers so the forums will be their own, personal cesspool. If so, then congratulations...you now have one less 4E "fanboy" to worry about. I love D&D. I have loved D&D since the first time I played way back in the mid 80's. While the rampant idiots might have made me lose interest in these forums, they have not killed my love for the game. For those with the maturity level to appreciate an evolving game, I wish you all well and hope you have a blast with 4E. If it turns out that it isn't for you, there are a few decades of older material for you to enjoy. In any case, have a blast, and don't let D&D die. Farewell all...

I suppose this is going to come off a bit harsh but...get over it?

This is just how the internet is...the entire internet. People are going to be rude, and you're just going to have to have thick skin. No reason to take things so personally.

Additionally: making a post to announce that your leaving because the world has been too ignorant and cruel = too melodramatic for my tastes. Why do you assume other people want to hear about this? What kind of point are you trying to make?

Sorry to see you go.

However, if your mind isn't totally made up, I'd urge you to stick around for a little while. The trolling seemed to reach its peak a few days ago, and it's kinda petered out now. There's still a lot of debate going on, but that's to be expected in a time of upheaval like this. Also, don't let the actions of a few cloud your view of the rest. I'm taking part in a rather spirited debate in the "I miss Ability Damage" thread, but I wouldn't call anyone involved a troll.

Either way, keep enjoying this great game, regardless of what edition you play.

So...if it's too melodramatic for you, why exactly are you responding? The people that I want to know will read it and appreciate what I've been trying to do lately. Besides, it's not like I'm hanging myself or something. I'm simply leaving behind something that no longer interests me. Blow it up into me telling the "world", as you so pitifully put it, that they're ignorant if you wish, but ask those that I had actual conversations of merit with. They understand. The point I'm trying to make here is that I'm tired of fighting a losing battle of ignorance vs. acceptance. If you wish to continue swimming around in this cesspool, feel free.

Oh, and Subedei, keep in mind that (unless I'm mistaken) Hocus here has been a rather active member of this community. I'd much rather he made a thread like this than simply vanish without an explanation. I'm certain he thinks many other people would prefer him to take this course of action as well, and that's why he did so.

If there's a select group of people you want to inform, why don't you just send them messages?

It feels more like you're condeming the boards and want everyone to know that your apparent one month of posting wasn't worth it. Seems to me that if you really didn't like it here, you'd just leave.

Best of luck. Though I wouldn't call this a cesspool, more a pool with a few spots of cess that can be easily swum around.

Despite what anyone here says, they can't change the fact that a good game is coming out on the 6th. A (bites tongue)-ing good game. That's the truth I'm keeping my eyes on.

Perhaps there is just too many for him to do so, or he may not even remember everyone he's had discussions with. A farewell on the boards, with his reasoning doesn't seem, at least to me, unjustified. What better place to say goodbye, then on the very thing your saying goodbye too.

As to Hocus, I have luked as a guest for a long long time because of the same reasons you are leaving, and though I think it's a shame for anyone who likes to express themselves to feel they can't safely on these boards anymore, I understand and respect your decision. Good luck!

Aye, when someone tried to troll over there, it was dealt with before I even saw their message. I did see the screen name though, which was the same as it was here.

I don't understand why criticism of a product would cause anyone distress. How can anyone be so tied into something like this? I have posted negative reviews about the PHB and its classes. It isn't distressing to me, except for the fact that I have been disappointed by the release of this edition. Believe me I will get over it (and the wasted money) when I go out for some drinks tonight. I will put the books away, and forget about D&D for another year. Check back in then and see if they have salvaged a bland Character system.

(Sure I will lurk around here and post while at work for the next few business days, and after the 6th when I see more people that have had full exposure)

I don't understand why criticism of a product would cause anyone distress.

The problem has been the primal scream therapy on the boards.

Now, your thread dealt with a specific thing about the game. You expressed disappointment in the way 4E was treating a particular aspect of the game (namely, wizards). Although you were clearly disappointed, you were able to say what your specific problem was. You were able to listen to opposing points of view and disagree with them in a civil fashion.

You aren't the problem.

For some, the mere existence of 4E is seen as a slight or a show of disrespect. Many of the critical posts haven't been about the game so much as someone's emotional reaction to the game. As you can probably surmise, much hostility has ensued. It has interfered substantially with the ability to have a good conversation about 4E.

I don't understand why criticism of a product would cause anyone distress.

It don't think that by itself does cause distress (there might be a few people that touchy but I doubt there are many). I.e you have said that you don't like what they did to the wizard in 4e and thus you don't care for the game. that's your opinion and you are entitled to it, and it causes most people no more agida than the guy who thinks 4e is the bestest thing since the invention of the orgasm.

So it isn't the people who 'merely' criticize the game that drive of people like HS, I think. There is another class of people, though. These people don't stop at merely saying "I don't like such and such a thing about 4e" or even "I think 4e is overall the worst game ever invented", they go to the point of "I don't like 4e and if you do you are a moron who likely lacks sufficient intellect to dress himself in the morning", THEY are the ones that irritate people like HS into leaving. Granted, i think storming off in a huff over the words of a few buttheads is overreacting, but you get called an idiot enough times by enough people, you are going to react. Some choose to hurl insults back, some choose to leave the boards. But THAT is where your 'distress' comes from.

No disrespect here guys, but I don’t understand some of the posters on this thread. If you think that someone posting their intent to leave is pointless and/or attention seeking, why support the thread by posting on it!?!

I don’t think it’s about ‘growing a thicker skin’, if someone called me an idiot at work, then I would complain, if one of my friends called me a moron to my face, I would probably sit them on their backside with a bloody nose. If I would not put up with such abuse in the real world, why should I allow it on an internet forum, with a bunch of people hiding behind fake names?

Personally, since I will probably never meet any of you, and to be brutally honest don’t really care what most of you think about me, but Hocus obviously did. As others have said just because you can be a jerk online, does not mean that you have to be!

Im still a fond believe that the best way to leave a forum with as much drama as possible is to fake your own death. It trumps all other drama queen exits. here is an informative video to guide you down that path. Start maximizing your forum drama now the easy way:

(well I decided not to actually post the link as the video as it is NSFW due to swearing and typed imagery of swearing. But if you go to youtube and you search for: "fake your death", it will be the firt video that pops up and its called "A beginners guide to faking your death on the internet". Check it out, its pretty funny )

On the other hand, it could also be interpreted as taking a stand against the problem, and 'resigning' as a form of protest against the negative behavior that caused him to leave. Thus possibly causing people who are basically decent, but carried away, to make a reality check and realize that their over-the-top posting was making the forum unpleasant for other people, and to moderate their tone.

As for the 'growing a thicker skin' stuff -- well, a lot of people look on their hobby as a way to relax and have fun. Many people deal with abysmal b.s. on a daily basis in order to make a living. When we visit an online forum like this, we might be looking to have a talk about elves and flumphs, rather than find ourselves leaping into a maelstrom of strident insults and cries of 'moron' and 'dumbed down.' :D

Use the ignore list. 99% of the problem is solved. I don't have to worry abour your delicate sensibilities being offended and I don't have to read your crap responding to what I post.

Ignore lists don't hide quotes.

Ignore lists don't prevent entire threads being derailed into giant eye-poking contests among those who don't use them, totally ruining the original discussion.

Ignore lists don't stop trolls from taking a discussion about weapon ranges and turning it into "4E is dumbed-down for retarded kidz!" "No, it isn't!" contests.

In other words, the only way to use 'ignore' to remove the offending content is to ignore pretty much everybody. Or, in short, to leave the forums, as Hocus Smokus did. The ignore list solves 0% of the problem, not 99%.

From your tone, dismissing all those who express concern about the pollution of the forum by trolling and vindictive bickering as having 'delicate sensibilities,' and typing 'crap,' all I can say is, hmmmm ....

Well, since I have quit a forum or two by public announcement of my departure I can suggest that the purpose in making such an announcement is to obtain one last verification of whether the atmosphere of, "Good riddance ya loser!" that you've been feeling really is dominant over the atmosphere of "Dammit, there are too many good people being driven away by abusive idiots!" that you've wanted for too long.

Aye! That's what I did, although it didn't end up being quite as long as planned. The break allowed me to "refresh", come back with a better attitude (which I try to maintain on the boards).

I try not to engage in any contentious debates but the negativity can still get me down if I'm not careful. Negativity and optimism don't balance each other out on the internet, so it's hard to avoid "bad feelings".

Ignore lists don't prevent entire threads being derailed into giant eye-poking contests among those who don't use them, totally ruining the original discussion.

Lord knows, I get pulled into enough of the bickering, but often, that's all there really is in a topic. When I do find someone who wants to engage in meaninful debate, I will often just skip the bickering posts and look for that person's name. It isn't hard to keep a nice, intelligent conversation going inside a messy thread, and SOMETIMES, you'll pull the others around just by keeping it going.

So no, ignoring everybody or leaving aren't the only two options you have.

If you think the Wizards forums are bad, go take a look at the World of Warcraft forums some day.

Wear a hazmat suit.

Though I quote you Ash, this isn't meant only for you. This is meant for a lot of the people on this thread.

The internet is not 100% about bad places that everyone acts like imbeciles. In fact, thank god, this is a very small minority. In fact, the only ones I've personally been a part that have shown absolute nastiness is this and Yahoo! Answers (Tried to have rational conversations about politics...left that board after about 1 month).

Just because other forums are worse, this doesn't mean that we have to be that bad. In reference to WoW, though I've never gone into the forum, I am ready to quit playing because all of the rude people have started to limit how much fun I'm having. Currently, I am looking into Warhammer and just playing lots of 4E online.

In closing, its the same nastiness in this thread, of people that didn't want to actually talk to the poster, but to tell him how 'bad' he was instead of just a) ignoring the post or b) just saying 'see ya' and getting on with your life. This, sadly, seems to be a normal thing on this board to the point that when I tell another user that I wasn't being condescending and actually just wanted a good conversation he was shocked and immediately apologized, saying that he was so used to other users insta flaming that he thought I was just picking a fight.

This shouldn't be how it is. Should we have good conversations and discuss what we disagree on? Absolutely! Throw in your two cents, if neccessary back it with facts, but don't just drop into a thread (such as this) for no other reason than to harrass the person that posted it. There is many thread titles I wasn't interested in, and I just skipped them.

One thing you may consider is attempting to control yourself before you tell others what to do.
