| #1lokiareMay 02, 2012 2:58:00 | Due to the way WotC handled 4E and likely will handle 5E I've decided to start a kickstarter project to create the RPG game that WE the players want.
If your interested I have a preview of what I've got so far for kickstarter. Constructive criticism is welcome:
Kickstarter project
Tell me what you think! |
| #2lokiareMay 02, 2012 3:38:47 | Seems nickstarter was based on a true story.
Yeah, I also want people to give me their money. But I would opt for a tech thing. Like stuff for a iphone or a doohicky for a ipad.
I think I should start a kickstarter to hire people to give me those ideas. Will you people give me the cash to kickstart the brainstorming on the item I'd like to kickstart?
I'll use the money to hire ZB, HS, RH and Draco to come up with something. ADH will draw it. I only need 25k!
Sarcasm aside what do you think? |
| #3lokiareMay 02, 2012 4:05:59 | Good kickstarter projects already have their products invented. You want to develop a RPG from scratch with no team. WotC as a lot more money and experience people than you do and it is taking them more than 10k $ and at leat 3 years to do develop 5e.
Plus this whole thing of yours is based on your discontent with WotC and hoping other frustrated players will help you. It shows in the texts you wrote. The chances of building successful product on nerd rage are low.
Save yourself the embarassement. Move on and instead educate the people in the group about the different conspiracies that threaten humanity.
And help me kickstart my project! give me 1k $ and I'll let you sleep with one of my employees!
Yeah, because that's what Paizo did, they just gave up and did nothing.
Yes WotC has more people and money, but they are doing everything backwards. If they got the community involved in creating the rules and testing the math, they would save a lot of money. I'm counting on 2 years of development time and the help of an active group of people to design the game. A kind of community experience so people can say "I suggested that rule" or "I designed that item". I'm not going for a replacement for big name D&D, I'm going for a fun game for those people that are tired of corporate shenanigans. Something that can lead to better things like the software that WotC promised and never delivered, and a more open design environment with better licensing options.
I also think that because WotC are moving on to 5E, that many if not most of their fan base has either moved on or is ready to. I'm sorry, but treating your customers like crap just doesn't work, especially in a shrinking economy...
So other than giving up do you have any suggestions? Like how should I reword it to mask my bias towards WotC? What features would you like to see in a game like this? etc...etc... |
| #4Robin_HoodlumMay 02, 2012 8:31:02 | Kickstarter did wonders for the upcoming Ogre/GEV game. www.kickstarter.com/projects/847271320/o...
Just sayin'... |
| #5zombie_babiesMay 02, 2012 8:36:02 | And help me kickstart my project! give me 1k $ and I'll let you sleep with one of my employees!
Not it! |
| #6Robin_HoodlumMay 02, 2012 8:52:08 |
And help me kickstart my project! give me 1k $ and I'll let you sleep with one of my employees!
1000 dollars to sleep with an OWS hippie girl? That sounds a bit too high, don't you think? |
| #7Cpt_MichaMay 02, 2012 8:56:43 | I think for 1k he's probably selling his personal OWS hippie girl. |
| #8lokiareMay 02, 2012 10:05:05 | Yeah, that would double the OWS budget.
But seriously what would you like to see in a D&D like game? |
| #9jetshieldMay 02, 2012 10:20:28 | otterfolk.
kittehs.
Oh. Prolly not what you're really asking...
 |
| #10Robin_HoodlumMay 02, 2012 10:25:02 |
But seriously what would you like to see in a D&D like game?
That question is not as easily answered as some may think. Me? If I told you what I would like to see in D&D, then it wouldn't be recognizable as D&D. It would look more like RoleMaster.
But good luck with your project! |
| #11lokiareMay 02, 2012 14:29:55 | Yeah, because that's what Paizo did, they just gave up and did nothing.
This right there discredits you. It show you have no sense of reality. Paizo had a team of experience designers and money. You have none of those.
Yes WotC has more people and money, but they are doing everything backwards.
In your disconnected vision. Some people liked 4e and some people seem to be interested with 5e.
Your comment just shows that this initiative is based on your frustrations and not an actual valid project. You should already be able to show your system, the classes, the monsters...
If they got the community involved in creating the rules and testing the math, they would save a lot of money.
Cool. Do a facebook page, let people send yo utheir ideas. Do not ask for their money, they won't give it to you. You have nothing to show them.
I'm counting on 2 years of development time
Based on what? Your experience designing 3e and 4e? You have no idea what you are getting into.
and the help of an active group of people to design the game.
Facebook.
A kind of community experience so people can say "I suggested that rule" or "I designed that item". I'm not going for a replacement for big name D&D,
Facebook.
I'm going for a fun game for those people that are tired of corporate shenanigans.
What shenanigans? Again this shows your frustration rather than having a real alternative to propose. If you want to start a Kickstarter page, do not bash another specific compagny. At least talk about your project.
Something that can lead to better things like the software that WotC promised and never delivered,
Dude! WotC with it's money didn't manage to do it. You are bitting more than you can chew. A new system and software!?
and a more open design environment with better licensing options.
It's called the OGL. You'll also have to fight Paizo, among other competitors.
I also think that because WotC are moving on to 5E, that many if not most of their fan base has either moved on or is ready to.
Like Pathfinder showed people wanted to move away from 3.5...
I'm sorry, but treating your customers like crap just doesn't work, especially in a shrinking economy...
Yes, but that is not enough for people to give you their money.
So other than giving up
I never was on board in the first place. This initiative is silly.
do you have any suggestions?
Change the name for something easier to say, more sexy for donors.
Like how should I reword it to mask my bias towards WotC?
How honest of you.
What features would you like to see in a game like this? etc...etc...
3.x like rules.
So what you are saying is if I come up with the core rules to the game and show off some preview material I might have a chance?
Also 3.x had lots of rules which ones specifically are you talking about (like grappling, linear fighters and quadratic wizards, 5 minute workdays, etc..etc...) |
| #12Robin_HoodlumMay 02, 2012 14:33:17 | Just sayin... I was doing some playtesting for a guy who already has a game or two under his belt, for a well-known game company. After 2 years, I quit. That was a few years ago, and he is just now getting the final version ready. Just sayin'... |
| #13lokiareMay 02, 2012 15:01:10 | | \|/

Ok, I'll throw something together... Any other ideas?
I expect to keep this game pretty simple for the 'core rules'. Then build onto it later. |

I hear if you put enough quotes-within-quotes you automatically get added to the 12E playtest.
|
| #19zombie_babiesMay 02, 2012 16:11:22 | We actually had a thread once where the entire point was to quote empty posts in order to make massive quote chains like that. That was the entirety of the thread. It ... it was closed for Disruption, IIRC. |

I remember both those games...I would not mind picking up a more current version.

| #23bone_nagaMay 02, 2012 18:23:55 | Yeah, that would double the OWS budget.
But seriously what would you like to see in a D&D like game?
You should be a lot more specific. Saying you will create the game that the players want will lead nowhere, because gamers are a finicky lot prone to nerd rage over seemingly small issues.
With 4e dying, maybe you should offer to create a 4e Pathfinder. That is, a tweaked 3pp version of 4e that cleans up some of the errata, math errors, subclasses, etc, but is more or less compatible with existing 4e material, and release it via the OGL so it cannot die. |

Now that's an idea. Thanks Bone_Naga...
I'm working on it now. Its going to be similar to 4E, but different enough that I won't get a C&D from WotC.
One of the main features is I seperate the skill aspect from the class and put it in a third column (first two columns are race and class) background. So far its looking pretty sweet... |

No problem. I've been working on something like that myself, but it's slow going, plus I don't think all of my ideas would be accepted by the 4e community as a whole, it's more for me and my group, although I probably will post it somewhere anyway in case anyone wants to harvest material from it. |

Cool. For me if I sit down and focus I can churn out pages of pretty decent rules and ideas. Its due to my college days when I could talk circles around my teachers and throw together a 6 week research paper in like 1 hour...
When I get it workable, I'll send you a copy so you can look it over and critique it. |

Not it! Not for anything below $2500.
And what would I want about an RPG? People to play with |

Yeah, I would be in. Especially if I got paid. Hell, I've done it for free for known gaming companies, getting paid is gravy! |

The extracurricular gig I'm doing right now will also bring me no financial profit, but for this thing I would demand good American money It's about time I got some serious source of income. |

$25K for five people? I'm not sure 5 people could develop an entire game system in less than a week. |
