damn cool. It's good that the dogs are finally getting some body armor.

Yep!
The military is starting to recognize them as a valuable asset that not only takes time to train, but money as well. But these dogs make a big enough impact on operations to be well worth it!

Jun 18, 2011 9:15:13 I'm glad to see the dogs are getting body armor. People don't realise this but dogs are friggin terrifying in a combat situation. Even with the bullets flying, it's just one more worry to have in a combat zone which is already fraught with danger.

Yeah, and there is some Arab cultural thing that makes them even more frightened of dogs than Westerners... IIRC...

Jun 18, 2011 10:00:01 I think thats more to due with a general lack of familiarity with dogs. We grew up around dogs. most Americans, seem to own, or have owned at least 1 dog in the course of their lives.

Jun 19, 2011 10:30:22 Most people could probablly take a dog in a 1 on 1 fight, if they keep their heads about them and reach for some sort of heavy object. But yeah, in the middle of a fire fight? At any rate, its not a fight your walking away from un-injured.

I don't think I'd recommend releasing the dogs in combat unless it was close-quaters. They're too valuable to risk like that and the dog is a lot less intimidating when it has to run halfway up the mountain towards someone with a machine gun to do anything.

I'm also not sure how good the body armor is. I'm not a dog handler so I don't know exactly how its designed, but the only part of the armor that I place any importance on is the ceramic plates. I could care less about the kevlar. And as the article mentioned, dogs already have issues in high heat since they can't cool themselves as well, so I don't know that I would recommend something that adds more weight and traps body heat.
