Tim Burton is to direct a new Alice in Wonderland movie, with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. I have a feeling that this will be a lot like American McGee's Alice.
Your thoughts?

As much as I enjoy both Burton and Depp, are they, like, joined at the hip or something?

I've always wanted to play Alice, actually. Honestly, considering how surreal Wonderland is, I'm really not surprised Burton's the one doing this.

somewhat like saying Samuel L Jackson and Quentin Tarentino are joined at the hip. Jackson owes a good part of his career to Tarentino films, and that's just fine. he found a director who he loves working with, and that has a style that jives well with his personal acting style.

it's much the same thing for Depp and Burton. Depp delivers dark and yet whimsical, which is Burton's bread and butter.

I, for one, would love to see a film adaptation of American McGee's Alice, since that version brings the story to its darker roots.

the only question is: Who plays Cheshire? Personally, I'd like to see Jim Carrey in the role.

hah hah !!!! that made me laugh just thinkiing about it!!

i feel this movie will be something like willy wonka...

i think it will be a great movie, but nothing like LOTR kinda big.

I am most curious to see the type of mood and artistic flair he uses for this childrens story.

twisted and whimsical. plenty of rich and surreal visual elements. This is to Alice in Wonderland as "the Nightmare before Christmas" is to "Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown"

EDIT:
OOH! OOH! John Goodman as the Walrus.

Very cool. I agree that I'd always thought Burton would make an Alice movie.

Think Helena Bonham Carter would make a good Queen of Hearts?

Or maybe the Duchess?

MORE PEPPER!!!

Or, perhaps more appropriately, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is to "Willy Wonka". ;)

Personally, I'd like to see Jim Carrey in the role.

You just made me think of Frank Caliendo's stand-up routine.
The Wizard of Oz, starring Robin Williams, produced by Robin Williams, directed by...Quentin Tarentino.

I have to agree that this movie will probably be like Willy Wonka, but I have to hope that it's in the way that it's able to stay closer to the original story.

Source? Because, actually, American McGee's Alice is supposed to be made into a film. So it might be one and the same.

Last heard Sarah Michelle Gellar was to play Alice, dunno if that is still true.

According to IMDB, the titular character will be played byMia Wasikowska.

I would think Gellar would be too old for Alice!

Alice is supposed to be between 9 and 11 years of age - aproximately the age of Alice Liddell, at the time that Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (who wrote Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass under the pen name of Lewis Caroll) allegedly wanted to marry her. (source) so Sarah Michelle Gellar is too old for the role.

Alice is in her late teens in American McGee's Alice... possibly early twenties, but its been so long since I played it. If it is just Alice in Wonderland, I'd certainly agree she's too old.

It's a smart match and almost seemed like an inevitability. Figured it was only a matter of time, really. Burton always has this neo-gothic, child-like homage genre down to a 't'. You see it in nearly all his films, the language is never too pretentious, etc. Even the MPAA ratings steer you in the "right direction." But the most obvious marks are his sets. He doesn't skimp on the scenery, that's for sure. All of them are larger than life, big on the gloom, and bells and whistles and surprisingly accurate.

He's alot like Ridely Scott (Bladerunner, Aliens, Legend) in this regard; incredibly detailed and intricate sets that surely cost a fortune. Their styles as directors are quite different, but the tools of the trade are very similar.

Prefered actors are a part of that equation too. Everyone knows Tarantino's go-to-guys, Spielberg likes T. Hanks and alot of All American types, but Burton swears by his wife and Johnny. I guess if the shoe fits...

Nothing like creative differences to ruin a 7 figure production. Carter and Depp kind of move in the same abstractions/motifs as Burton and make for good working partners. And even if they didn't, you can't argue w/ the commercial success of such couplings in his previous work. Good business is where you find it.

As for American McGee's, outstanding work. I imagine it will be similar in scope given its undeniably dark element. Very in vogue right now to take take something wholesome and fantastical (most childhood fairy tales, etc) and put a decidely dark/grim slant on it. Human nature or dynamic opposites?

Even the soundtrack is tops; Chris Vrenna of Nine Inch Nails. Very moving and prefered in alot of gaming circles that like the peripherall extras of music and anything to punch-up thematic elements. His independent band Tweaker is also 1st rate. Wouldn't say gothic necessarilly, but definetly synth heavy, dark electronic, not EBM, not quite industrial. Lots of guests; Robert Smith (The Cure) and the like.

What? Ever seen a twelve year old girl before? That's her age in game.

I always thought if Guillermo del Toro directed an Alice version it would look like American McGee's Alice. But I definitely think that this will be fun. I have always enjoyed the Burton/Depp team-up. Hopefully Burton also finds a role for Helena Bonham Carter. Maybe she'll get to play the Queen! Otherwise he might have an upset wife on his hands. ;)

Apparently, American McGee's Alice was originally slated to be directed by Wes Craven with Sarah Michelle Gellar as the lead, but both are no longer associated with the film. So as of now McGee's isn't under any kind of production schedule.

In my perfect world, Burton would hire Morton Cohen and Martin Gardner as consultants for this movie.

I have a feeling it will be a lot like every other one of Time "look at me, I'm so quirky and artsy" Burton's films.
