Also, in b4 lock.

What?
The nuke debacle or me being shunned now?

And why should this thread be locked?
I mean, you typed "in b4 lock"... so what is wrong that this thread will be locked?

I figured that this is political, so it'd be locked.

And the nuke thing is awful.

How so?

Seems more criminal than political...

to me anyway.

But please, explain and/or show how this is political...

That's nothing, I've heard (on radio I think), that pre-going pro one of garrisons near where I live was hiring a security company.
Boggles the mind.

What do you want from us?  Telepathic posting?  I was in bed.  And any more details is unneeded, unwanted, and unnecessary.

*ahem*

Moving on, I think it's interesting.  I mean, an air base that's storing nuclear weapons?  And they're required to keep their weapons unloaded?!  That's... kinda out there.  I suppose if you knew about that sort of thing you might be ballsey enough to try a stunt like that.

Regardless though, what can you expect?  The US spends an obscene amount of money maintaining our modern military.  We're also one of the countries most likely to send troops around the world.  So if you have a place that doesn't use their troops nearly so often, why would you expect them to match the US's level of (proportional) spending?  It's kinda scary, sure, but not entirely unexpected.  Especially for one of the northern European countries that hasn't seen armed conflict in a long time.

So... /shrug

Think of it as the rest of the world helping the US stay top-dog.

Oh, and as to how it's "political"... I've been told by the moderators that any international news is political.

I've seen active US posts in Germany that could probably be snuck onto easily enough with a little planning. Heaven's forbid, an army post on US soil is easy enough to sneak onto.

As for the nukes, that level of lax security around something that sensitive is criminal. Any post commander who was found responsible for letting something like that would find themselves being grilled by a congressional committee really soon.

Most bases can be broken into with a little planning. I've pulled guard on different installations for different reasons. Often I was completely unarmed. If I had a weapon, it was just for show, as I had no ammo. I was actually going for a run on a base one time on a trail through the woods. I came out of the woods outside the base, about a block down from the gate. Later I went back in and entered the post completely bypassing the gate security. It's sad but it happens just about everywhere.

Oh and the comment about good looking modern weapons that don't work when you need to use them, that totally applies to us too. I had to listen to a full bird colonel (who was in charge of soldier weapons) that the M4 was the best carbine in the entire world. And he actually believed it too. With people like him in charge it's no wonder it's so hard to get better equipment. He probably thinks the ACU was a good idea too.

Yeah, especially in this day and age...

And I have to question the need for the US to store nukes on an airbase in Belguim. I am inclined to believe they are probably bombs rather than missles, but I have nothing to back that up...

well you know we have so many that we just can't store them ourselves.

They probably are bombs.

I wouldn't say especially in this day in age, but any day in age.

You don't leave that *** effectively unguarded.

How about we just save even more money and use the honor system instead of guards.

For a while the US had Nuclear shells.  I mean "little boy" type atomic warheads in artillery shells.

And the Soviets built some suitcase nukes and admitted they turned up short on inventory about a decade ago.

We've been avoiding stray nuclear blasts on the basis of the honor system for a couple years now.

Or, you know, dismantle them. That should solve the problem too Smile

And yes, down here we have other things to spend money on 'sides the military. Fortunately Wink

You do know russia's and our missiles are still aimed at each other right?

Already knowing this, knowing we have nuke bombs in a base close to Russia already doesn't surprise me.

Also knowing that we have them within easy strike range of the middle east doesn't surprise me either.

But "bombs"?
Missles or rockets I could understand, but bombs?

Yes, our missles are still aimed at each other, but there are quite a few less...
Actually, our missles aren't "aimed" at anything until the launch order is given. Then the missles are encoded with target data.
And the target could just as well be Beijing as Moscow...

A few years ago there was a mutual agreement to no longer aim our missiles at each other. So, no, they shouldn't be aimed at us right now. Not that it matters, it takes less than 10 minutes to reload the targeting data.

Cpt_Micha

Feb 13, 2010 9:09:29
well I think it takes what 8 for a missile to get to target?

So it does make a difference somewhat. Gives you 18 minutes to find shelter. :-p

Sub-launched.
It takes about twice that time for a city-busting ICBM to hit.

Sub launched warheads tend to be smaller yield "battlefield" weapons, intended for mainly military targets... not citys.

well that's 10 more minutes bringing it up to 26 minutes or so to get the **** out of dodge.

If you are smart with your evacuation that's plenty of time to get key personell away, and a decent number of what would be innocent bystanders out of harm's way.

Don't forget your hat then.

Maybe it's not that bad that it looks like there won't be that shield thing in Poland and Czech. I don't know southern neighbours, but knowing my people, those rockets wouldn't last a day in their silos ;)

That would only work if everyone played along.  Oh, and every single one was dismantled.  The cat's out of the bag and it ain't goin' back in.  So we damned well better pay some serious attention to it.

RE: Runnin' from the nuke:

If one was heading close enough to where I lived (for a long time, that was a distinct possibility), I'd run toward it.  I don't want to die slowly from radiation poisoning, thanks.  Vaporize my problems away. ;)

I've just seen a news report on some guys stealing four tanks. They were caught, but still, how do you steal tanks?
the funniest thing is that the thieves were probably planning to sell them as scrap metal. This happens all the time. A few bridges went this way.

Think about how many tanks, cannons, or other stuff is on display at various bases, many of them reserve or national guard. No one is guarding that stuff. If you had the means to move something that heavy, it wouldn't be any problem at all.

The news report mentioned they were particulary cheeky about it. There was shown an amateur video of a truck carrying a tank with this song playing. I wonder if it was made by the thieves (possible) or added by the news guys.
