| #1rizen_isstaria_dupSep 14, 2008 0:14:37 | So I'm a HUGE anime and manga fan. Some favorites Death Note, Berserk, Inuyasha and D. Grayman, just to name a few. I could talk about anime all day, so whats everyones favorites !? Also I go to Chicago's Anime Central Convention (or ACEN) and cosplay every year, I've done Tifa Heartlock, Kirara for Samurai 7, Rukia Kuchki from Bleach and a random ninja. The con has this event called the Masquerade, which has the best cosplayers and funny skits. I love the Masquerade, its the best event, but the last Masquerade SUCKED ! None of the skits were funny at all. So a few of my friends (they also play D&D with me) and I want to make a good skit for next year and I need some advice. I only have one idea so far and I'm up for new ideas. My skit idea is, to redo The Whitest Kids You Know poop meeting, if you havn't seen the video heres the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URE7--qtHck ,but with Narutos archvillians the Akatsuki ( Akatsuki pictures http://media.photobucket.com/image/akatsuki/AnimeChick415/Akatsuki/akatsuki-1.jpg?o=15 . So effectively Akatsuki Poop Meeting, I think it would be hilarious. |
| #2squarecircleSep 14, 2008 0:54:51 | I don't watch as much anime as some of my friends, but some of the series I've liked include: Witch Hunter Robin Initial D Ghost in the Shell (both series and movie) Of all the animes you've listed, I've only ever seen Inuyasha, and it wasn't quite to my taste. I did like Dragonball Z as a teen, but I grew out of that. |
| #3rizen_isstaria_dupSep 14, 2008 1:11:27 | I don't watch as much anime as some of my friends, but some of the series I've liked include: You'd probably like Berserk, it has alot of fighting and blood, heres an awesome amv http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOqyKbwC5nY. I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. As for Inuyasha, I pay homage to the anime that got me into anime. |
| #4squarecircleSep 14, 2008 2:12:46 | You'd probably like Berserk, it has alot of fighting and blood, heres an awesome amv http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOqyKbwC5nY. I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. As for Inuyasha, I pay homage to the anime that got me into anime. Cool, thanks for the link! It looks pretty sweet, like a D&D anime (but better than Record of Lodoss War or whatever that anime was called-- I just remember that it bored me). I don't dislike Inuyasha btw, in fact I'd watch it if it were on and I had nothing better to do, or if I were watching it with someone else. It's mildly enjoyable for me, just not something I'd go out of my way to watch or anything. It's like Dragonball Z is to me, now. (And I'd probably have liked Inuyasha back when I really dug DBZ, but I didn't know about it at the time.) The guy from Berserk looks like Yusuke (I probably murdered that spelling) from Yu Yu Hakusho. That was another anime I found fun to watch, though not quite to the extent as the ones I listed in my previous post. |
| #5knights_discipleSep 14, 2008 2:36:23 | Cool, thanks for the link! VG Cats once said Inuyasha was "Dragonball Z for girls", so however you wish to interpret that. |
| #6squarecircleSep 14, 2008 2:57:11 | Heh. VG Cats once said Inuyasha was "Dragonball Z for girls", so however you wish to interpret that. Funny you should say that, the main reason I did watch Inuyasha was because my ex-fiancee (back when we were together) was a huge fan. |
| #7darkraven18599Sep 14, 2008 2:58:52 | Ummm, Does Robotech count? 'Cause I loves me some Robotech. |
| #8rizen_isstaria_dupSep 14, 2008 10:28:33 | You know the movie the 300 right ? Well Guts the main character is like all the 300 in one man. |
| #9saintkeeleonSep 14, 2008 10:32:34 | I like Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop. I usually read manga though because I don't have a set schedule and it's hard to see a series in order that way. My favorite manga are Bleach and Fruits Basket. I got into both of those while trying to teach myself to draw the anime style. |
| #10rizen_isstaria_dupSep 14, 2008 10:40:01 | I like Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop. I got into both of those while trying to teach myself to draw the anime style. Samurai Champloo is great ! I like the Naruto manga better then the anime, Bleach is good. You should check out Kurohime, maybe the best manga I've ever read. |
| #11temukaalietchfieldSep 14, 2008 11:06:48 | Total anime fan here. I think 500 dvds makes that a credible statement. About a hundred dvds worth of fansubbed anime waiting to get replaced by retail dvd (comes out at several hundred dvd worth of retail anime). Large Haruhi cloth wall scroll from last Anime North using rare wall space in hobby room. Only a small amount of anime miniatures though, but finding 1990s anime minis is not simple. I do NOT watch anime on TV. It's fan sub or dvd thank you very much. And NO I don't watch it on YouTube (yuck). I support AMV.org with my wallet. Love watching decently made amvs. I've even got the Sailormoon RPG (although I have never played it, too worried that some of my friends would actually be good at playing senshi ). Some things you just don't want to know. |
| #12saintkeeleonSep 14, 2008 11:32:36 | Samurai Champloo is great ! I like the Naruto manga better then the anime, Bleach is good. You should check out Kurohime, maybe the best manga I've ever read. The Naruto anime seemed a bit... smarmy so I skipped the manga. I will take a look if it's better than the anime though. Thanks for the tip! I have the entire Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. Tank, sung by Ein, for the win! |
| #13rizen_isstaria_dupSep 14, 2008 12:15:22 | Total anime fan here. I only watch subs (okay 95% of the time), I hate American television so much that I don't have cable. Most anime I watch now are fresh from Japan, like Vampire Knight, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and D. Gray-man. I normally polish off at least one season (or series) a week. I've watched every episode of Naruto, Bleach, D. Gray-man ( I watch the new episodes as they come out in Japan) and Inuyasha + the mangas. I have the BISM anime RPG, I havn't played it though. |
| #14balcinokSep 14, 2008 12:40:00 | The Naruto anime seemed a bit... smarmy so I skipped the manga. I will take a look if it's better than the anime though. I personally believe that the manga is better then the anime if for no other reason then the fact that it doesn't have DBZ-esque amounts of filler (Next time on Dragon Ball Z! They scream a lot, do inner monologues about the screaming power [over 9000!] and then grimace). Let there be no mistake, I loved DBZ through my childhood (Gohan ftw! Saiya man = fail ) but it got too ridiculous.Who here has read Eyeshield 21? Samurai Deeper Kyo? Priest? Shaman King? One Piece (Die for kids television die in a fiery rain of magma that Asmodeous himself... )? Rurouni Kenshin? Tsubasa? |
| #15baneofelvesSep 14, 2008 12:51:01 | Man, I wish I had TV so I could see my favorite animes. The ones I really like are Samurai Champloo, Bleach, and Ghost in the Shell |

I've also watched some subs of it online. I watched Samurai X someone had on DVD and thought it was pretty sweet. |
| #17rizen_isstaria_dupSep 14, 2008 12:54:00 | The Naruto anime seemed a bit... smarmy so I skipped the manga. I will take a look if it's better than the anime though. Thanks for the tip! Don't forget Piano Black! Heres a picture of a Mugen cosplayer http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=83434428&albumID=2059215&imageID=28248768 and a funny Spike pic http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=83434428&albumID=2059215&imageID=28248934. Is this the stairway to heaven ? Anyone have any interesting cosplay experiences? I went to ACEN's rave dance in my ninja costume.. I climbed onto a high rise and started dancing (I can't dance) . I swear everyone was pointing at me. Later I snuck around and stole ALOT of glow sticks, I had like 40 of them on me when I stopped. I had to eventually leave though do to the only other ninja. How he knew I was a girl is still beyond me, I was in complete ninja gear and had on a tangle of glow sticks ! Everywhere I went, he went, not to mention he danced much worst then me! So like a ninja I vanished.. |
| #18teemuuSep 14, 2008 12:54:32 | Geeze. I have a lot of favorites Fate/stay night Tsukihime Claymore Tower of Druga Moyashimon ( tales of agriculture ! lol) I am enjoying Kara no Kyoki right now, but each episode seems to have a 2 month wait period. |
| #19baneofelvesSep 14, 2008 12:57:38 | Don't forget Piano Black! | #20balcinokSep 14, 2008 12:58:01 | I haven't read the manga but I watched Rurouni Kenshin when it was on Cartoon Network and liked it. I've also watched some subs of it online. Both the manga and anime of Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin are superb, much in the same way of Cowboy Bebop, Trigun being great on page and screen. Other good animes include, Eureka 7, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, Neon Genesis, Afro Samurai, Paranoia Agent and more that may or may not come to me in the future. |
| #21rizen_isstaria_dupSep 14, 2008 13:32:03 | Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is probably the most epic anime ever, I mean come on they get a mech the size of a galaxy. D. Gray-man is a longer series and the anime is WAY better then Naruto and Bleach. |
| #22MusicOfCreationSep 14, 2008 13:40:27 | I like Yoroiden Samurai Troopers, Slayers, Sailor Moon, Record of Lodoss Wars, Love Hina, and Master of Mosquiton(in no particular order). I used to watch anime all the time, but nowadays since most of my show/movie watching occurs while I'm surfing the internet, I have a hard time reading subtitles and websites at the same time. Considering how much I seriously dislike most(non-Slayers) dubs, I don't get to watch as much as I used to. |
| #23squarecircleSep 14, 2008 13:45:06 | I heard elsewhere that Berserk is an incomplete anime with no intention on completing it. Is this true? I'll still watch it either way, I'm just curious. |
| #24wight_chocolateSep 14, 2008 14:19:22 | It doesn't end up an upnote. Let's put it that way. |
| #25hanzo187Sep 14, 2008 14:30:17 | So I'm a HUGE anime and manga fan. Some favorites Death Note, Berserk, Inuyasha and D. Grayman, just to name a few. I could talk about anime all day, so whats everyones favorites !? Yes, finally!!!!! HAPPY DAY!!! I love anime. Cowboy Bebop will always be my favorite, but I love Rurouni Kenshin (manga's my favorite), Death Note, NANA (yeah, it's for girls, but it's pretty damn good), TTGL (just started it, but it rocks), Blade of the Immortal, Ninja Scroll, VHD, and a multitude of others. I was recommended Paradise Kiss on my LiveJournal, so I'll check that out eventually. Oh yeah, and I have a bit of a Guyver jones right now (sig). Still need to watch FLCL, though. My first anime, however, was Project A-Ko (in '93). I'm gonna cosplay next year, too. I can't this year because of school (and I need to lose weight), but I wanna go to Dragon*Con next year. I have an Aoshi and a rat thief started. I know of your con's masq, as well, Rizen (never been there, but um...yeah, *cough*Stripper Vash*cough*). Masq ideas? Well, I wrote a script for an Enzyte ad involving Altair a few months ago. There's also potential in Jimmy Kimmel's "I'm ******* Ben Affleck", but involving Aoshi and Kenshin. That might not get by censors, but for all I know, there's been worse. I would kill to see a skit involving nothing but ninjas from different shows. That would be sweet. Good luck with the masquerade. Hope it goes well for you. Oh yeah, good job on Rukia. |
| #26temukaalietchfieldSep 14, 2008 15:49:36 | Seems like a lot of series mentioned, seem fairly recent. Hmm maybe I have been watching longer than I realized. | #27hanzo187Sep 14, 2008 16:01:35 | Helluva list. Casshan gets you a win. I've been trying to find that one for years with no success. Since my b-day's on the 24th, I'm gonna get Black Lagoon. I really look forward to watching that series. |
| #28duke_qaSep 14, 2008 16:09:13 | I found Beserk not very entertaining. Although not the worst anime i've watched by far, I just didn't like the characters that much. and the final episodes were naturally a bad way to end it. But there were some positive things like the politics and tactics involved in it, as you got that feeling of a merc-company slowly gaining prestige and power. So good inspiration for rpg's. Just finished Elfen Lied, now that one was disturbing. Mutated girls with horns that kinetically slices and shreds and pulps people...while naked. And thats if you are lucky and don't **** them off so that they kill you slowly. Combine that with a split personality, alot of cute things, and the overhanging threat of insta-gib at any moment that the wrong personality comes back and you got an interesting series. Before that i saw with hunter robin. bit too slow, bit to obvious who would be the ultimate bad-guys. backgrounds rendered with 3d and grainy ambient occlusion annoyed me. But it had pretty good characters and a few good episodes, worth watching. Gurren Lagann was the most epic anime since Gits, great entertainment. really 4e in the special attacks and animations. And compared to evangelion Gainax got the mix of traumatic and bittersweet much better here. The blend of humor and loss/bitterness in this show is almost perfect. Vampire Knight? Urgh don't get me started. Nicely drawn but never goes anywhere imo. Too much generic japanese humor a part of the canon, which breaks believability. And as mentioned, it takes forever to go anywhere. I was hoping for a more tragic ending(like her getting turned and slowly descending into inhumanity, that would have been a show). But hey, theres another season coming so still hope. But I'll make it easy and make a list of things that i found worth watching: 1. Ghost in the shell. movies and series and series-movies. should be seen by everyone. 2. Gurren Lagann. epic, fun, bittersweet. a classic tale told in a great manner. 3. Fullmetal Alchemist. good show, nothing beats Alex Louis Armstrong in epic un-epicness :D 4. Death Note. nuff said ![]() 5. Castle in the Sky. one of those must-see anime movies, great mysterious technology and flying pirates! 6. Princess Mononoke, another one. very nicely fantasy movie with grey morality and plot that is hard to foresee. cute little maskots. 7. Akira. another must-see movie. psychic powers that bends reality in strange ways. think Leonardo Dicaprio is working on a hollywood version these days... Theres probably more, but thats all i really feel like writing down. its a good start though. |
| #29squarecircleSep 14, 2008 21:56:15 | Any other animes with a D&D feel? I watched a couple eps of Record of Lodoss War and didn't like it. I've, erm, "acquired" Berserk (though I haven't watched it yet). Any others? |
| #30darkraven18599Sep 14, 2008 22:39:48 | Umm.... I bought the animated film Transformers:The Movie on VHS when I was a kid. That count? |
| #31temukaalietchfieldSep 15, 2008 0:52:54 | Ruin Explorers has a great humour level and Sorcerer Hunters has some great laughs too for the D&D look. |
| #32shamurai7Sep 15, 2008 1:56:25 | Any other animes with a D&D feel? I watched a couple eps of Record of Lodoss War and didn't like it. I've, erm, "acquired" Berserk (though I haven't watched it yet). Any others? WATCH BERSERK NOW!!!! its my favorite ever...very dnd ish... although you have to keep in mind that this is the LAST animated anything that was hand drawn.....so it is not as impressive to look at as computer aided animation. Berserk= last hand drawn animation in the world. the story does have a cliffhanger ending....but thats one of my favorite parts about it.....you will literally dwell upon it for days after watching it. and in my opinion thats part of why its good. a lot of things are easy to forget...you wont forget berserk. character development is awesome. plenty of violence and action... if you are interested in the story continuing it is currently being translated (the manga) by Darkhorse. |
| #33rizen_isstaria_dupSep 15, 2008 1:58:09 | Heres a 2007 skit I saw at ACEN, one of my favorites http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XEySJ7bU1E. The funniest anime I've ever seen is probably Golden Boy, its six episodes. It's probably the only anime I'd recommend watching in english. Claymore is kinda D&D like. Naruto would easily be among my very favorites had it stuck true to the manga, I mean with out the 100 some episodes of filler. The newer chapters are very epic. Kurohime is the best manga ever. It's about a beautiful woman who summons monsters with her gun. She loses her memory, love and is turned into a little girl after she fights the gods. With the love of a young man she can turn back to normal. It's a great series. Oh and weres a picture of kurohime.. http://media.photobucket.com/image/kurohime/KakoHatake1992/Kurohime/InternetExplorerWallpaper140-1.jpg?o=7 |
| #34rizen_isstaria_dupSep 15, 2008 2:22:42 | Any Full Metal Alchemist fans? Their going to make a new season. My cosplay ideas for next ACEN: Jenova from FF7 Road from D. Gray-man Lenalee from D. Gray-man Casca from Berserk Or old school, Sango from Inuyasha (demon slayer outfit) |
| #35darkraven18599Sep 15, 2008 3:02:50 | So they're making a Cowboy Bebop movie huh? What's your thoughts on that? I hear Keanu Reeves is being rumored to play Spike Spiegel. Is that a good thing? Or did anyone just picture a complete Matrix "whoah, I know kung fu" thing and shudder? |
| #36calronmoonflowerSep 15, 2008 4:07:55 | Lets see, Diaguard: See what happen when saving the world is delegated to the lowest bidder. Slayers: Like D&D Ruin Soldier: Also like D&D Vampire Hunter D and the sequel. The Vision of Escaflowne: Giant robots, the Legend of Atlantis, psychic powers and Sir Issac Newton (that's no joke) as the BBEG. Looks allot like Eberron. Excel Saga: The insanity hits fan. |
| #37erleniSep 15, 2008 5:18:59 | Hello, my fav at the moment is Saiyuki. Also Full Metal Alchemist, Black Lagoon and Inuyasha are pretty good. |
| #38saintkeeleonSep 15, 2008 9:22:14 | So they're making a Cowboy Bebop movie huh? What's your thoughts on that? I hear Keanu Reeves is being rumored to play Spike Spiegel. Is that a good thing? Or did anyone just picture a complete Matrix "whoah, I know kung fu" thing and shudder? Ugh! Keanu Reeves? Ick blick! Of course, I suppose it all comes down to how well he can point a finger and shout, "And you! You take too long to take a sh**!" I just can't picture pretty-boy mustering the proper poise for that... I can't think of anyone else that fits the bill though either. Vin Diesel could do Jet though. That wouldn't be too bad. |
| #39stompie5Sep 15, 2008 11:57:19 | Berserk is my favorite, but if you watch it, do not expect a explanation at the end. Ones I really liked are Samuria 7, Escaflowne, Last Exile, Gungrave, and Trigun. Ive seen others, but they weren't my thing. |
| #40zombie_babiesSep 15, 2008 12:14:28 | Wait a second ... anime? Anime? Aniyou, pal! |
| #41princenicySep 15, 2008 16:52:28 | I love Anime. Need to watch a lot more, though. Any suggestions of great anime? |
| #42temukaalietchfieldSep 15, 2008 18:34:42 | I love Anime. Need to watch a lot more, though. Any suggestions of great anime? Each sub genre of anime has greats, you might need to go a bit further in your request. I have seen anime that was great for its genre, but might not have been "utlimately" great. After all, how does a person compare Azumanga Daioh with Death Note? The first anime I bought (honestly bought the real thing) was Air. End price for a mere 5 dvds was close to 200 bucks. On the surface that sounds crazy. But that series touched me in so many ways. You can be laughing one moment and crying the next. And the OST is about the purest joy I have known in music. I also have a fondness for what I call serious story driven anime series that usually last 26 eps. I picked up Madlax at last years con. There's really no mindless haha factor, no panties gags, no oh it's summer, time to put the girls all in swimsuits and outdoors spas obsession. Not that any of that bothers me, but everyonce in a while, it's nice to watch a defacto 26 ep length drawn out movie type anime. I have several of those in my stash. But some days you just want to laugh your head off at a show that is only about making you laugh. Azumanga Daioh sure does that well. It's all just funny stuff. The same people did Pany Poni Dash (odd sounding name). 6 dvds each of pure laughter. I find shows like Naruto tried too hard to be all things to all people and it came out looking like mainstream mush. And then there are all the shows that were just there to keep the show going while they tried to prepare s real ep that might mean something. Often those shows jump the shark and just don't know when to pack up and go home. It's a VERY rare show that makes it past ep 26 and doesn't immediately go bland. |
| #43the_wambleSep 15, 2008 18:54:52 | I watch a good bit of anime (though I tend to avoid the ones that span longer than the typical 26 episodes) and right now I'm making my way through Noir (a great series for fans of french neo-noir and John Woo). Other shows I've particularly enjoyed: Cowboy Bebop Samurai Champloo Hellsing Outlaw Star Trigun (probably my favorite anime, if only because of the pacifism themes) Neon Genesis Evangelion (brilliant!!!) Elfen Lied Samurai 7 Vision of Escaflowne The only anime I've actually watched and truly did not like was Big O. While I love the visuals, I thought the mecha elements were really out of place for the setting and the characters I generally found annoying. |

I did like him in Guyver, though. I like Crispin Freeman more, partly because he's an anime fan himself (he actually said once that he preferred subs, IIRC), but also because I believe his Alucard voice absolutely ROCKS!! |

On the topic of Gungrave, as of 5 minutes ago, I just finished watching all 26 episodes today. I watched the whole series today ! I'M TIRED ! That was one hell of a good anime ! If anyone is looking to a good anime to watch, I'd suggest D. Gray-Man. Its a bit of a longer series like Naruto and Bleach, but a way better anime - I think. Its alot more of a serious anime, with alot more likable characters. Neon Genesis Evangelion.. Personlly I think Rah-Xephon was better (- better ending). |
