Anime Influence and suggestions

It is very apparent that Anime has lots of influence on gamers.  My experience with Anime is pretty much Starblazers, Robotech, Akira, Lodoss Wars, Vampire Hunter D, and Slayers (The only one out of all of these I do not like.)

It often appears to me that the Anime likes to put alot of comedy into the fantasy which may be a misconception but it is one of the reasons I have trouble finding ones I like.  I have lots of Anime at my fingertips with my Netflix account.

Can someone suggest some Anime that might be along the lines of Lodoss Wars that I might reference?  I have access to tons of Anime for free but it is a bit overwhelming.

I realized from the Warlord thread that there are very few anime characters I can recognize.  I am willing to give it a second chance.

My Wife loves Inuyasha, but I don't think that is quite to my tastes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Howdy folks,

I have moved this thread to the Off-Topic Tavern where it is more on-topic.

Thanks.

I don't know what Lodoss Wars is, but it's really hard to go wrong with Tri-Gun, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo (faux anime), anything by Hayao Miyazaki, Ninja Scroll, Metropolis... And I really liked Macross 2, which is (obviously) the sequel to Macross - one of the shows Robotech is cobbled from.

Claymore may be worth a shot. I second Cowboy Bebop.

Oh, yeah: Princess Mononoke is awesome, though bizarre. And there's one that features giant raccoon , but I can't remember what it's called.

Oh, and if you can find Voltron (the one with the lions)... DO IT!!!

Ghost in the Shell is pure awesome. No or very little comedy in it. You have two tv seasons, a tv movie and two movies. The second movie sucks and you can skip it. I recommand seeing the movie (1995) first than the tv series and tv movie. They are releasing 4 new movies this year. 50 minutes long each, called Ghost in the Shell: Arise.

I second Cowboy Bebop, both the series and the movie.

Ninja Scroll is a must! I never saw Ninja Scroll 2. You might want to check it out.

The first three episodes of Ergo Proxy were visually impressive and the speculative fiction angle was very stimulating. After that it goes downhill, but maybe you'll like it.

You might want to check out Gantz. Two season anime. Some good ideas behind it, but the series was made before the manga was too developped, so the ending is meh.

Ah yeah!  I saw Ninja Scroll as well, it was incrdible.

Thanks so far, I will see if I can find Cowboy Beebop on Netflix, if not I know there is ghost in the shell.

I cannot believe no Toriyama works have been suggested. Especially since you seem to love the shounen genre, especially with a bit of camp*coughslayerscough*.

Ruroni Kenshin kicked ass, Claymore is quite good, GitS and Bebop are also amazing. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a kickass manga, but the anime is super new. Digimon Adventure and Tamers both seriously kicked ass, but Savers is much, much more shounen than those two, if nowhere near as amazing

The HST, and really the P6, suck really hard. The only thing that resembles decent writing there is One Piece, which is campy and Shounen, so you might like it.

But, first things first, get off netflix. It sucks. No subs, all craptastic dubs. Funimation has subs, even if they are a bit mediocre, of basically every anime they're doing, both at their website and youtube. You have the internet. There is no excuse to be watching dubs.

Also, Inuyasha? Seriously, that's even worse than a large part of the P6.

Rune Soldier is from the same universe as Lodoss War. The hero is an idiot magician that perfers to fight with his fists.

Dai-Guard giant robot fights monsters, but the corporation they they work for is full of petty obstructive bureaucrats.

The Vision of Escaflowne, psychic schoolgirl end up on another planet fighting an evil empire.

I've seen the X-Men. Overly talky and padded to the extreme. And the abundance of animation shortcuts (such as not showing the character that is talking or a shot of some random background when Emma Frost was getting out of that pod) bugged me a lot.

There's only one anime that isn't total crap and it's already been mentioned several times: Bebop ftw, holmes.

EDIT: Mononoke was pretty ok, too.  It's no Bebop, though.

Also, Gundam is amazing. Especially Wing. Also, Eva is great.

No, that is not GitS. GitS doesn't have kids protagonists or stupid anime faces in it. The themes and plots are adult and complexe. But you need to like cybepunk and speculative fiction to enjoy it. The art in the film is top notch too.

No. It's more involving a futuristic Japanese FBI and you really need a sociology textbook with you to fully enjoy it.
Also tried Full Metal Alchemist

Probably the wrong one. The FMA anime is a crappy and has very little to do with the manga. Try FMA Brotherhood. It's the FMA manga, but animated.

Do you rebember "Ranmma 1/2"? a comedy + martial arts.

And Saint Seiya? In my land the title of the TV serie was "Los caballeros del zodiaco" (= the knights of zodiac).

A good story was Appleseed. My cousin bought it.

Crying Freeman? I only watched the movie.

* I hate Dragon Ball, when Goku was child the story was a parody of otaku fiction but since Pikolo the plot is simple. 24 pages of Superman has got more story that 20 episodes of Goku vs Freezer. Goku is the most annoying Gary Stu I rebember.

i'm big on Vampire Hunter D, Bleach (sadly), Hellsing, Angel Sanctuary (more the manga), Final Fantasy Unlimited, Lodoss Wars and for a little comedic effect Katekayo Hitman Reborn, Slayers and Cowboy Bebop.  Also, games!! the Final Fantasy series, Bloodrain, Devil May Cry and many others!
