Anniversary of the Ur-game :)

Jun 06, 2009 6:58:38 As those of you who routinely use Google probably noticed, one good old game - probably the good old game in the eyes of many people, myself included - has a bit of an anniversary today. Yep, Tetris, the game responsible for the loss of countless hours (and work-hours) of our lives was created one sunny day, 25 years ago, on the box-like computers in Dorodnicyn Computing Centre in Moscow, by a certain bearded programmer called Alexey Pajitnov. Some two years later it was ported into MS-DOS (and thus the PC) by a then 16-year old student called Vadim Gerasimov, then seen in a British software company who decided they just had to have it... and the rest is history. In the quarter of a century since it was coded for the Elektronika-60, the game has been ported to every hardware worth mentioning, sold (in one form or another) some 70 million copies, and has become one of the most familiar names in the history of gaming.

Back when Tetris first showed up in the local arcades around here, I remember dropping almost $80 worth of birthday money into the machine one time - I walked in right when the mall opened and didn't leave till the guy turned off the power to the machines at closing time.

One of the local McD's has a touch-screen video game set-up on the wall to entertain people while they wait. There's a billiard-ball number-matching game where you have to line up four or more balls of the same number in a row. I've sat there playing the game for over an hour while my food got cold and mushy.

Jun 07, 2009 5:02:30 I love tetris...I set some records back in the day...when the game boy version was released, I think I was one of the first people to break 200 lines. I can't prove that, but I'm sure it's true. Nintendo power used to have people send in and post their high scores, no one came close. It's interesting, I kind of zone out when I play...now I have a handheld version that I play, but it never gets very fast, so I can just play indefinitely. I've gotten over a thousand lines on it before...

I love tetris.

I actually have the original version of Tetris on my other computer (not very good graphics, only one way rotation, requires moslo...)
