Love the game. It has always been a perfect mix of individual excellence and teamwork to me. Although I wasn't really interested in watching it except top-class competitions, such as European or World Championships and Olympics.
I was training basketball as a kid, played it constantly for fun in highschool, and nowadays, I still play sometimes with some old friends from the neighbourhood when I'm home.

Personally, I have always preferred NCAA college ball to the NBA and the competitions you mentioned. There are dozens of 'Cinderella' opportunities every weekend and I was raised on March Madness. I always preferred the passion, even if the skills were not quite the same.
As a further note, I was hoping to garner some responses along the line of the football fan thread with everyone posting about their teams.

Yes. Rajon Rondo was a Wildcat. So was Antoine Walker. He played on the '96 championship team. I wonder where he is now. That is good enough for me.
I also remember Jordan scoring 60+ in losing a play-off game to the Celtics. Awesome game. Without the great supporting cast he had to play with that drive and passion I like to see.

I used to only watch football as far as sports goes, but more often now I will sit through a basketball game with some friends. They are so exciting, and at least last season while watching and rooting for the Celtics you weren't disappointed too often. Growing up all I remember is lots of disappointment from them, which is why I didn't watch it too much.

The duel between a pitcher and a batter or the physicality of football always intersted me more - and still do. ;) Once the Cavaliers got LeBron, however, I was slightly changed in my opinion. Getting to see one of the best to ever play the game play for my local team is kind of cool. Cleveland isn't known for attracting stars, you know. Hell, the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is here but none of the inductees are willing to make the trek so they hold the ceremony in NYC (and Cleve people generally dislike NYC - stupid Yank-mees ;)). At any rate, it's fun watching LeBron and it's nice to have one team that honestly could go all the way. It's the one bright spot we've got!
March Madness, I feel, is aptly named. I get fairly agitated that the only damned thing on during that time is NCAA basketball. It's the only thing anyone seems to care about. And, IMO at least, it's not all that entertaining. But it takes all kinds, I suppose. :P
But Basketball seems to be one of the better of the also-rans.
Having LeBron James in great, but basketball still ranks third behind baseball and football for me. Still, right now, the Cavaliers give us the best hope for a championship in Cleveland and when you haven't had one in your lifetime, you'll take it anyway you can get it.
Almost true. Remember when the Force and Crunch won championships in indoor soccer? No? Me either. ;) Soooo ... anything but soccer, I guess. :P
You're right, though. I'd much rather see the Brownies win it or the Tribe (and they would have last year if Lee pitched then like he did this year). Still, LeBron is a special athlete and it's nice to see him wearing Cleveland colors ... for now, at least.
I guess if I had to rank the sports I'm into, it would go like this: MMA, Football (pro), Football (NCAA - though the Buckeyes are doing their level best to remove this interest), Baseball (pro), Basketball (pro) and then nothing. Of the "rest", I think - if I were forced to watch any - I'd go with women's professional tennis. It's not terrible. Honest! And compared to golf, soccer, NASCAR, etc, it's positively riveting. And I will now admit that I have a soft-spot for women's Olympic curling, too. Go ahead and laugh, but I know how interesting it can be. For a few minutes, at least. :D

@Kobajagrande With your subdued answer, I wasn't sure if you understood the gist of my post. My post was done in a style of 'screaming' at the hiding Zombie Babies with the intent of playing on the sports rivalry thing, but between different sports rather than individual teams. Just in case, there was no ill will intended.

Jodie Meeks. He is a junior guard for Kentucky, but sat out almost all last season with a knee injury so no one outside of UK fans know anything about him. Before the game he was 4th in the nation in scoring.
It is impressive because he broke the UK single game scoring record which was set by Dan Issel in '70 I think. Especiaaly impressive considering all the great teams and talent UK has had in the last about 40 years.

It is basketball. They play five on five full court.

Na, I've always been a rhombus.
In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.
So, everyone swings, but there is usually an order it is done. If the guy swinging before you in the order sinks the ball, there is no reason to swing again because at best the shot can match that of the one who sank the ball.

He has not made a decision (reports say he keeps switching back and forth.) but the University of Kentucky has sent a plane to pick him up. The news stations have had live streams feeding from his house, his office, and now from a chopper scouring for when the plane arrives in Memphis. It is nuts, but that is Kentucky basketball. Calipari has been offered an eight year deal worth 35 million dollars.

Unfortunatly, like dirtyfrank, I have to deal with the fact that my local team is the Sacramento Kings. While it is fun being a Kings fan during those years when they are the underdogs fighting their way into the playoffs, this year has really beaten the fandom out of me.
LeBron James and the Cavaliers are fun to watch on the court though. Come playoff time, I might just end up rooting for them.

Of course, I also know that most NBA playoff series aren't remotely as special as that 7-game epic we witnessed, so, nope, still not a convert. :P
As you can imagine, the greek civil war(Olympiakos vs Panathinaikos) was all the talk here, and the game certainly didn't dissapoint(with a somewhat unusual for them emphasis on the centers). Every lead quickly disappeared and the victor was uncertain at least the last second( you can imagine the stress. In the end, Panathinaikos won 84-82, Olympiakos failing to score in the game's last offence.

For the Euroleague Championship! (I had to give you someone to rail against.

As you can imagine, the city is going wild here...
The Euroleague final has just ended, and Panathinaikos is the European champion! The game was AMAZING, with both teams playing great basketball as befits their status. By the end of the first half Panathinaikos gained a +23 lead based on great defence and lots of 3-point shoots. 10 minutes later CSKA made an outstanding comeback( 17-0!) locking down their opponents and got back to the game with vengeance. In the fourth quarter things were practically even. In the end Panathinaikos gained a 2-point lead(losing a free throw that could act as a safeguard), CSka went for a 3-oints shot that would give them victory yet their offence of CSKA wasn't fruitful. The final score was 73-71.
As you can imagine, the city is going wild here...
Damn refs. CSKA would have womn if it had been a fair game. Wait til next year.

The college basketball season has arrived!
Those of us who are UK fans are happy to have back Patrick Patterson for one more year. Outstanding player and an outstanding individual.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The lights inside Rupp Arena had been off for 20 minutes, but Patrick Patterson wasn't ready to leave.
Not as long as there were still pictures to take, he said. Not as long as there were autographs to sign and fans to meet - especially the 4-year-old who had waited more than an hour after the game to talk to her favorite Kentucky basketball player.
As Patterson reached over the rail to sign the girl's program, a security guard grabbed him by the arm and directed him toward the tunnel. Rupp Arena was officially closed, the man announced. It was time for everyone to leave.
Two years later, Patterson still remembers how he felt as the girl dropped her pen, wrapped her arms around her father's leg and began to sob.
"It was terrible," he said. "I didn't have any choice but to walk back over there and sign her program and take a picture with her. I couldn't make a little girl cry. She looked up at me said, 'Thank you Mr. Patterson.'"
The 6-foot-9, 235-pound Patterson paused and softened his voice.
"It really is amazing," he said, "how much power you have as an athlete, how much influence they can have on a little kid. It feels good to be able to make them smile."
Perhaps that explains why Patterson, a probable first-round pick in next summer's NBA draft, ended up in the living room of a total stranger last week. After serving as an instructor during a Kentucky's basketball camp for women, Patterson encountered a mother in the parking lot who needed a ride home because her husband had experienced car trouble.
As if offering to give her a lift wasn't enough, Patterson followed her into her home and spent 10 minutes talking with her husband - an avid Wildcats fan - and their two young sons.
Patterson approves almost everyone who requests access to his Facebook page. As of Wednesday he had 4,992 friends. One of them is Heather Durham, a 14-year-old Kentucky fan with cystic fibrosis.
Heather, who is on the waiting list for a double-lung transplant, had never met Patterson when she sent him an instant message a few months ago, so she wasn't expecting him to respond. Patterson, though, spent the following two months offering encouragement to Heather during online chat sessions.
Patterson took things a step further a few weeks ago when he showed up at the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital for a surprise visit with his new friend. Heather said the two of them talked for nearly two hours.
"He was so cool," Heather said during a phone interview Monday. "He told me he'd be praying for me."
Other than the nurses taking pictures of him with their cell phones, Patterson didn't encounter any cameras or microphones or reporters as he left the hospital that day, mainly because no one knew he was there. Oftentimes visits by sports stars are organized by the athletic department and publicized with a press release.
This act of kindness, though, was all Patterson's idea and something he didn't even share with his parents or coach.
"Patrick isn't looking for attention," Kentucky's John Calipari said. "He's not out chasing ambulances. He's just doing what comes natural."

When the crucial games began, they proved to be unstoppable and demolished everything that came aginst them. An incredibly fast team that didn't lack in defence either. Pau Gasol was the tournament's MVP.
Slovenia was the surprise nobody had foreseen. A very accurate team beyond 6.25, they forced everyone to stand up and take notice. In the end, Slovenia took the 4th place, an unprecedented success. It will be interesting to see if they will remain among the top European powers.
In the end, everyone here was more than satisfied with Greece earning the bronze metal. The team's new roster was very different than the previous one, with some so far irreplacable players missing. Still, the team was succesful, distinguishing itself at rebounds, a traditional weaknees of greek national teams.

I have been watching a streaming telecast of the University of Kentucky's Big Blue Madness and Joh Wall is unfrikkingbelievably fast. If he were not on the court I would be saying that about Eric Bledsoe.

We have three ridiculusly good and strong big men: Patrick patterson, Demarcus Cousins, and Daniel Orton. Plus, we have a (six foot ten inch) big man who has been draining three after three.
Running the dribble drive motion offense with big men who can shoot away from the basket and blindingly fast guards they will be really tough to stop.
I am so stoked! We are so deep at every position although we will not play a "true" center.

The Cavs lost to the Celtics at home on Tuesday. First game of the year, too. Last year they did not lose at home until the last game of the regular season - and they nearly one that one, too, without playing the starters for any serious time. In this loss, they looked awful. I mean, terrible. LeBron was great of course, but as a team they were way off. The offense was slow and they don't sync well yet. Without D West, the defense looked weaker, too. Since he's gonna be out for a while and our offensive coordinator from last year is now head coach of the Pistons, it's probably not going to be a pretty start. Hopefully they can get their **** together soon. They're C-Town's only hope!

On March 22, 1998 I was 12 years old. I finished my quiz bowl practice, bounced into our min-van and asked my mother what the Kentucky/Duke score was. When she said "We're behind by 18″ my heart dropped, not only because my beloved Wildcats were losing by so much but also because I knew I was going home to a potentially homicidal father whose shouting could be heard many blocks away. But to my surprise, when I walked in the door there was no noise at all; neither the TV nor my father's banshee screams. It was completely silent. And there sat my dad on the floor of our den with the TV on but no audio and with even his beloved radio shut off. For the next hour, we both sat like that. Even when we started to win again, my father adamantly refused to turn the sound back on. I missed all the iconic phrases "Turner, burner, and one", "Wojo slaps the floor", "He's hurting him! Magloire is hurting him!". And why? We were afraid that any sudden movement would put an end to the team's incredible run. That March evening, my father passed onto me, as had his father before him, the incredible responsibility that comes with being an at-home fan.
Yes, we all know the responsibilities of the fans at the games-to encourage the team through cheering, to create a hostile atmosphere, to come up with clever acronyms in order to get on TV. But my dad taught me that day that at-home fans have an important role to play in the outcome of the games. From our clothing choices (the lucky/unlucky shirt/pants/underwear) to our audio choices (TV sound/radio sound/no sound), we play the role of the 7th man for our beloved Wildcats and it's time for us to stand up proudly and take credit for all the games that we have won, simply by wearing the right color underwear and refusing to shave our legs during the season.
Here are my Five Steps every at-home fan should follow in order to maximize their talent
Step 1: The preparation phase-or as we called it in college "pre-gaming". Perhaps the most important step in capturing the win, this happens before the game starts. This is when you choose the right outfit and you decide where you'll watch the game and with whom. Prior conditioning can and should be used wisely here. If we lost the last game while you sat on the left side of the couch, make sure you switch it up. If your wife, who never watches a game, watched our last big win, for the good of the team, tie her to the couch and force her eyes open. Yes, a restraining order and/or jail time may be in your future, but at least we won't lose to Gardner Webb again.
Step 2: The experimentation phase- This phase lasts through the college years first half and allows you to test the hypothesis you came up with in your preparation phase. I always say it's better to wait until half-time to make any adjustments, but if you see us being Florida-ized in the first 15 minutes, go ahead and change that underwear. In our house, we use this time to decide the audio situation for the rest of the game. Do we go with the radio and leave the TV on mute, the TV announcers, or no audio at all? These are major choices that we continually discuss throughout the game. Above all, the at-home fan must be flexible.
Step 3: The adjustment phase (half time)- This is your time to change the game up. Are we losing? Change shirts. Winning? Spend the entire 30 minutes trying desperately not to tempt fate by doing anything that would negatively impact the team. When it comes to being the best at-home fan you can be, you must be willing to adjust to the changing needs of the game and be willing to lose feeling in your extremities if need be.
Step 4: The implementation phase- You're in the home stretch, and here is where you use all the knowledge you've built up during the game to make the win happen. You must push through the pain and the temptation to take the easy way out. Your teammates on the court/field are not giving up and neither can you. No, you won't get the glory but you'll have the quiet satisfaction of knowing that you willed those free-throws in by the sheer force of your desire.
Step 5: The prayer phase- Like two rabid dogs, I normally try and keep my religion and my sports separated, but occasionally a little divine intervention is necessary. By the last two minutes of a close game, the best at-home fans will have completely abandoned their set position and everything they have developed before and during the game and will have dropped to their knees in a prayer position. Personally, I tend to create bargains with God in order to secure the win. As a UK basketball fan, I'm pretty sure I've run up a huge tab using this method. As a UK football fan, I'm pretty sure it all comes out in the wash.
There are people that will call this crazy. They will say that my choice to sit in the car and listen to the radio whenever we are playing at home and ahead by less than 5 with 2 minutes left cannot possibly effect the play of a bunch of 20-something men. But those people have never seen a simple sock change turn into a 2nd half comeback. They've never seen the miracle of the mute button or the religion that is found at the end of a close game. Behind every great team are those great fans watching from home, knowing that the choices they are making will spur their team to victory.
