I found my old Myst CD lying around yesterday, and nostalgia poured out of me in buckets. I decided to take another look around, and managed to find my Riven set, and even Exile. I had actually never gotten around to beating Riven (my old computer kept crashing), so I'm gonna boot it up once I stroll through Myst again.

God, even the music just takes me back... I love this damn game.

So I figured I'd ask around: How many of you actually played any of the Myst series? What did you think of it? Are the newer ones worth buying? I hear they were well-received by most of the fans...

Personally, I'm a diehard Myst fan. I just wanna know if there are any other diehard fans out there.

I've played all of them, although I haven't finished End of Ages yet. My impressions?

Myst - kinda liked it but is responsible for initially putting me off the series (and point and clicks as a whole). Why? Because it is a very short game. I didn't realise that until I replayed and finished it. But on first play I got through most of it then got stuck at the music/space ship puzzle, which was very glitchy :S This was so frustrating. I really felt I was stuck at the beginning (when actually I was close to the end) and achieved nothing. It took me 10 years and someone talking me into Riven to have another go. And I got stuck in the same place. Fortunately there was the wonderful internet to (a) help me and (b) make me realise I was not alone.

Riven - WOWIEEEE! Dang fabulous game (But 2nd place, keep reading). Great puzzles and plot, tremendously beautiful and atmospheric. Amazing world-building mythos.

Exile - I actually think this is my favorate. Why? Saavedro. He's fantastic. I like getting into the heads of individual characters and with this you really could. He led you on a tour, you understood exactly how ****ed-up he was and how he got there. That actor (same guy who played Grima in LOTR and Suder in Voyager) really does a good job.

Revelation - This one is good but not a stand alone, and there were some bits that were annoying game-play wise. Probably in 3rd place. But you're hooked in here by Atrus' children and finding out what happened to them after Myst. Basically after playing the previous games you are invested in the characters and therefore you really want to find out and help.

End of Ages - Um. Yeah. The actors we CGed in this one, very good CG but I think it took away a lot of what made Myst so appealing (and realistic). So far I have found it pretty dull. Atrus isn't there, nor anyone you recognise. It's hard to know why you should care really... And I've actually found this one boring. Okay, the gameplay in all of them is slow, but the others had me interested. This didn't. If I finish it I suspect it will purely be for completeness of the series.

Look - free review! (It may get posted to my blog since I took so much effort over it...)

So End of Ages aint that great eh?

Well, I may just pick it up for the same reason then: to complete the series. I can agree that Exile was one of my favorites, but Riven might be ahead of it for me. Don't get me wrong, I love Myst to death, but its probably my least favorite of the three I've played.

Oh, and yes, Saavedro is my favorite villain (though I've seen my friend beat Riven, and I do really love Gehn, too).

Well, as I said I haven't finished End of ages yet, however am less than impressed by what I've seen so far.

Also, I agree. Gehn is superbly fun (and evil). Saavedro only tops him because he's really superb.

I played Myst right when it came out and it was REALLY enjoyable. I was however 8 at the time, and so a few things (read: the music puzzle, and navigating the ship on all the alternate pathways) were a bit beyond me. Luckily, my older sister figured that out, so we completed it.

Riven was even more incredible--better images, more freedom of movement, larger world. I loved it. However, there were some places I got stuck and I was overly youthful/impatient...I wound up using the interwebs to help in a few places (e.g. the colored marbles placed on the grid...I don't remember what (if anything) else.

I haven't actually tried anything past that...maybe I should.

Basic point: Myst is awesome.

Apparently there was another game in the series - Uru; Ages beyond Myst. I think it was intended to be an MMO but pretty much bombed. Anyone played this?

Actually, it wasn't bad. I only played the single player version of Uru, but the puzzles were fun and you got to customize your own avatar (I guess that fits the idea that it was supposed to go online) and it wasn't point or click, so a bit different from myst, riven, and exile (the only others I've played).

Probably. Try good old games (gog.com) or gametap.com. Course, you gotta pay for membership... but there's tons of great stuff.
