| #1rodeoclownjihadApr 12, 2011 14:05:47 | Hello everyone. Im rather new to the forums here and just became a D&DI subscriber a few days ago and was wondering if there were any players out there interested in starting a gaming group up to play some D&D 4e. The way I was considering doing it, was by using the online virtual table top called "GameTable". Its a super simple java based program (so it works on mac and pc) and its free! Also i have a 5 person vent server if anyone wanted to use voice chat instead of the chat that gametable has. Characters could be made using the D&DI character builder (just export your character and e-mail it to the dm) (also if you dont have the character builder just provide the dm with the stats you rolled up and the dm (or another player) could plug those numbers into the builder). The purpose of this post is twofold. 1) To see if anyone is indeed interested in starting up this play group (logistics can be worked out later) 2) To meet active members of the D&D community (as i said i just became a subscriber and would like to meet others : ) ) |
| #2zombie_babiesApr 12, 2011 14:22:50 | Looking for group not here happening. Place to happening good here. MANY EDITINGS: Talking members to place here good. |
| #3rodeoclownjihadApr 12, 2011 14:39:47 | @Zombie_Babies: ..........Ok then. Im just going to go ahead and assume because of the ridiculously horrible grammar and the that you posted a link to someplace, that you are phishing. |
| #4JhariiApr 12, 2011 14:41:51 | It's a link to the Looking for players/groups section. The Yoda-speak is him just being playful with you. His 18,000 posts should be an indicator that he's not a phisher/spammer and means no ill will. |
| #5rodeoclownjihadApr 12, 2011 14:45:26 | It's a link to the Looking for players/groups section. The Yoda-speak is him just being playful with you. His 18,000 posts should be an indicator that he's not a phisher/spammer and means no ill will. Ok lol. So theres a looking for group section? I must have missed it. I'd still rather not take my chances clicking a random link XD (bad exp). |
| #6JhariiApr 12, 2011 14:46:52 | It's all good. We try to keep ZB away from the welcoming committee, but sometimes he gets loose. |
| #7homicidal_squirrelApr 12, 2011 15:00:57 | It's all good. We try to keep ZB away from the welcoming committee, but sometimes he gets loose. Actually, it is ZB's job to point people in the right direction. He hasn't had to do it much lately (not much need), so I think we are going to have to find something else to do. |
| #8zombie_babiesApr 12, 2011 15:03:27 | Ok lol. So theres a looking for group section? I must have missed it. I'd still rather not take my chances clicking a random link XD (bad exp). Yeah, that section of the boards is notoriously hard to find. The link is safe, though. I was just funnin' ya a li'l with the goofy talkerations. |
| #9rodeoclownjihadApr 12, 2011 15:06:42 | Ok lol. So theres a looking for group section? I must have missed it. I'd still rather not take my chances clicking a random link XD (bad exp). Haha no worries. I just read that and thought it fit your stereotypical "Click here for the moneys of a life time!!!" scam. No harm done : ) I did find it however and posted up there. It was a little concerning that the latest post there was 7 months ago haha Guess I'll most likely have to wait till the D&DI VT comes out for an actual online group : ( (Players are so hard to find in my small town) |
| #10zombie_babiesApr 12, 2011 15:10:35 | Yeah, that place is probably dead cuz nobody can ever find it. We've asked that something be done but it hasn't. Since you're now a DDI member, you may get invited to the VTT beta. I'm in it (though I don't do much of anything with it as I play F2F) and they're expanding the beta in phases. If you check out DDI General I'm pretty sure there's a thread there explaining the way to ensure you're considered for it. Failing finding that thread, find the VCL. His name is Mudbunny and you won't even have to bug him (though he wouldn't consider answering a question a bother) cuz he has the instructions in his signature. Hopefully you'll get in soon and you won't have to wait 'til the official release. There's also play by post groups here somewhere. I'd link but I don't have wherever it is they are handy. |
| #11rodeoclownjihadApr 12, 2011 15:14:27 | NICE! Yeah I'll def have to check that out. I applied for the beta a couple days ago as i just became a DDI member. Im hoping to hear something. I've been excited about the VT ever since i picked 4e up at release and saw they were going to be releasing one for it. |
| #12zombie_babiesApr 12, 2011 15:17:17 | Cool. Well, I hope you get in in the next phase. To be honest I'm not sure where everything is currently at as far as that whole deal goes. You should hang out in DDI General for a while and check some threads. Be prepared, though, for lots of whining, petty bickering and all sorts of exaggeration pro and con. There are good people there representing both factions, though, so a li'l wading through crap can net you a decent nugget or two of info. Umm ... just be sure the nugget is actually info before you pick it up. ![]() |
| #13JhariiApr 12, 2011 15:20:23 | Yeah, that place is probably dead cuz nobody can ever find it. Yep. Leave it to Wizards not to promote community for a social game such as D&D. |
| #14rodeoclownjihadApr 12, 2011 15:20:35 | Yeah that would be nice. About the bickering, I've spent a good amount of time on World of Warcraft and bickering about every facet of the game is like pro sport for them. Shouldn't effect me too much : ) Thx much for the tip though. |
| #15rodeoclownjihadApr 12, 2011 15:24:11 | Yeah, that place is probably dead cuz nobody can ever find it. I 1st started playin D&D when i was in 6th grade during 2e under TSR. I dont miss the rules system but I want my viking helmet, furry loin cloth and half nekkid women back haha. |
| #16bone_nagaApr 12, 2011 15:33:58 | I've asked a couple times to have a thread stickied explaining where the looking for group forums are. They are almost impossible to find unless you already know where to look. For online games, I'm a personal fan of Maptool (rptools.net). It's another free java based VTT, but while the basic functions are relatively simple to use, if you want to really dive into it there is a lot you can do with it. Plus you can combine that with Tokentool to easily make custom tokens for PCs, NPCs, and monsters. I was using Maptool to run a game, but it sort of fell apart as people got busy. I've been debating trying to get another group together but haven't really bothered to do it yet. |
| #17rodeoclownjihadApr 12, 2011 15:45:45 | I've asked a couple times to have a thread stickied explaining where the looking for group forums are. They are almost impossible to find unless you already know where to look. I've looked into maptool but i got hung up on the image library aspect of it. I couldn't figure out how to do anything. Maybe i was just too impatient and did take the time to really explore. The one i use (gametable) is nothing flashy. it essentially is a computer version of one of those chessex vinyl grid mats that you use wet erase markers with. It has tokens (for objects terrain and PCs/NPCs) as well and you can use rptools' token tool for them. There are def much more possibilities with maptool that i've seen. But getting the images for such just destroyed my fragile mind lol. |
| #18bone_nagaApr 12, 2011 16:01:09 | Oh I love being able to add to the image library. I have a huge library that I share with my fractal mapper program. The images aren't hard to get either. There are a few sites where you can get tons of graphics, like the dunjinni forums or rpgmapshare. You can organize it however you like too, just add the main folder containing the library to the program and you're good to go. I have a mix of premade maps, map tiles, and textures/objects to create maps. I like being able to add in things like vision blocking layers so the program will automatically handle what the characters can and cannot see. The macro function is pretty neat too. Some people have gone all out with it and created massive 4e rulesets that completely automate everything. I just use it to track ammo, HP, and surges, but it still comes in pretty handy. |
| #19rodeoclownjihadApr 12, 2011 16:13:30 | It's all good. We try to keep ZB away from the welcoming committee, but sometimes he gets loose. How is that proof that 4e is ruining D&D? In my opinion its players who search for "facts" that support their opinion and then try and use them as "proof" would more likely to ruin a community than the current edition of the game. I've been playing since 2e, never been more satisfied. |

He just sees that you are new and figures you'll be an easy catch. |
| #21rodeoclownjihadApr 12, 2011 16:31:18 | Ah so he's your resident troll lol. It was obvious by his post but I always feel compelled to throw my 2 cents in whether someone views that as being baited or not hehe. So again I guess i'll "bite" How long someone has been playing has everything to do with your comments seeing as how you (as well as i) are one of idk how many countless D&D players with different opinions i'm sure everyone has "proof" of something. @bone_naga: Yeah saw all the cool things maptool can do. I really like the LOS mechanic. But i have no clue how the building of maps works for it. nor do i have any map making software that i can use. (im on a mac and dundjinni seems to be dead) is maptool tile based with the map creation or is it more like just placing in layered objects that have been made elsewhere? |
| #22bone_nagaApr 12, 2011 16:47:04 | You can load premade maps or create new ones (for large or really detailed maps I use Fractal Mapper and then export it, for smaller maps I just create them directly in Maptool). When you create a new map it will ask you what background to use. You can make it a solid color, choose a texture, or use an image (usually if you are just importing a premade map you use that last option). After that, it's pretty simple. On the left (assuming you are using the default layout and didn't change it up) will be all the folders you have added to the resource library. If you click on a folder, in the window below it will be thumbnails of all the objects it contains. Find one you want to add, and just drag and drop onto the map. After you do that, you can resize it as necessary (I find that few images come out just the way you like when they are first placed on the map). Pay attention to what layer you are using. If you put something on the background layer instead of the object layer it's no big deal, but don't put the wrong items on the hidden layer or the players won't see them, and only put tokens on the token layer. Maptool also has basic drawing functions, but this is not a strong area for the program. It isn't like photoshop where the drawn shapes become objects that you can manipulate further to tweak them. Once you draw something, that's it. If you screw up, erase part of it or undo it entirely and start all over. You can draw lines and hollow shapes or fill them with colors and textures (but again, you must select the fill before drawing it). So depending on what is easier for you, you can just drop tiles onto it and create your maps that way, you can draw them all with lines and textures, or use a combination. |

No. 2) To meet active members of the D&D community (as i said i just became a subscriber and would like to meet others : ) ) Hello. Goodbye. |

I'm curious. How often do you yell at kids to get off your lawn? ![]() |
| #25bone_nagaApr 12, 2011 18:38:18 | Landmines exist for that. I like where your head is at. By which I mean right above your shoulders. |

Thanx a lot. I'll have to give that another go then. Gametable is nice for simplicity and just on the fly mapping ( as i said its almost exactly like using the vinyl mat except on the computer) but it doesn't let me go all out. |

| #28maveryckApr 13, 2011 9:09:38 | Hello All, new user here, looking to join an online gameand make some new firends! I'm an experienced tabletop roleplayer and DM. Have played all the games, know all the rules- been playing since the first days of Gygax. I have several published fiction short stories and the campaigns and adventures I craft are deep, rich, immersive and entertaining- oh and you get to roll lots and lots of dice |
| #29JhariiApr 13, 2011 9:10:39 | I apologize in advance for what will ensue. |
| #30rodeoclownjihadApr 13, 2011 9:21:14 | I apologize in advance for what will ensue. I smell trolls a'comin' ! @Maveryck: Im putting together an online gaming group and would love to have someone other than myself DM : D I already have 2-3 players other than myself lined up. It would also be exciting to have someone with such experience. Send me a message to my inbox with what times/days are good for you and ill pass out my msn / vent info so we can figure out the logistics on actually playing. ( I use gametable but could use another VT if that'd be better) |
| #31pluisjenApr 13, 2011 9:32:57 | Level 6 Troll reporting for duty! Looking for a forum to do some RP. I have Skill Training (Pissing People Off) and am going to get Skill Focus in it at next level. Also, welcome. I don't think place does a lot of forum based RP anymore but you can always find interesting nerd-battles in the D&D General boards. There's also plenty of helpful advice in many of the other boards but beware of any topic with more then 100 replies because that's Troll Territory and only advised for high level D&D players. |
| #32JhariiApr 13, 2011 9:34:32 | Rodeo and Maveryck... I would absolutely love to commit to DMing this. What type of frequency are you looking to play? I have a full Fantasy Grounds II license which allows unlimited players to connect (i.e. it's free for players). Now, I am not promising that I can commit. It's probably unlikely that I can. But if the times and frequency are right, I could probably do it. |
| #33rodeoclownjihadApr 13, 2011 9:44:58 | Well my availability is pretty flexible. I'd be ok with as little as a 1 or 2 hour game (but can go longer) 1 or 2 days a week. I have a face 2 face group that I DM Mon, Thurs and Fri from 6-10pm eastern time. Other than that Wednesday nights would have to be around 9 or 9.30pm eastern. A day time group or a weekend group would be ideal and it would be exciting for me to get to be a player again haha. Also, does Fantasy grounds work with mac? |
| #34JhariiApr 13, 2011 9:51:19 | Daytime wouldn't work for me since I work during the day. It would have to be evening games during the week. Maybe Saturday during the day...
|
| #35zombie_babiesApr 13, 2011 10:04:26 | No you bastards! Stop it! If a game gets put togethere here it will become the place to look for groups! Don't do it! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo! |
| #36JhariiApr 13, 2011 10:18:46 | Are you saying that you want to join in? FYI, here is the Fantasy Grounds website if anyone wants to check it out. |
| #37zombie_babiesApr 13, 2011 10:19:48 | Why you're one cold hearted OTTer, ain't ya? Damn. ![]() |
| #38JhariiApr 13, 2011 10:33:21 | You should see me DM. ![]() |
| #39homicidal_squirrelApr 13, 2011 11:11:12 | You shall not get a game together in the OTT!!! [Note: Almighty ORCS, forgive me for what I must do to stop the OTT from becoming the place to get games going.] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

| #42rodeoclownjihadApr 13, 2011 21:20:15 | No you bastards! Stop it! If a game gets put togethere here it will become the place to look for groups! Don't do it! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I started exploring that again today. I'm def switching to that over GameTable. The only prob is with getting resources for my map building. Im on mac so a lot of compressed folders i find cant be opened without some sort of 3rd party program i know nothing about or dont trust lol. |
| #43bone_nagaApr 14, 2011 14:47:01 | Well that certainly makes it harder if you can't open compressed folders. I would do some research and find a trustworthy program that works on Macs. There are also some site that will unzip files for you online without having to install any software. There are also a lot of sites where you can download files individually, it'll just be a slower process to build up a good sized library. |
| #44toastedamphibianApr 14, 2011 23:33:56 | Landmines exist for that. FINALLY something goldy, robin, and myself can agree upon! Edit: The landmine part, not the head part. |
