Yep. Warhammer 40k and Fantasy both have Orc(k)s in it, a race of genetically engineered survivors/warriors/British soccer hooligans/general scourge of existance. They all speak in bad Cockney accents and are prone to outrageously violent and comedic outbursts. In a setting that is about as GRIMDARK as it gets, they are the comedy factor.

I'd rather fire off REAL machineguns, or submachineguns.

I fired off an Uzi once.  That was great fun! :D

I only wish I had the chance to fire off a Tommy gun.  That would be about the coolest thing, except maybe for a coaxial minigun.

Especially when the tracers get stuck in plywood targets and sets the whole thing on fire!

The 50 is fun,  but an MG42 is better.

NOTE:   if you can get to Vegas you still fire full auto at the shooting ranges near the strip.

but lets take it I step beyond.       The real fun is the m-79 bloop tube (you new kids know its cousin the m203 - its the big thing under your m16).

Just to hear that "bloop" and watching it arc through the air before it goes "boom!"  (hell, even launching smoke was fun with that thing)

if you are in Vegas, head over to the Las vegas gun range (just south west of the airport),   they have that, as well as the SAW (cousin to the coax in the Bradley),  but they did not have a minigun when i was there (and at 6000 rounds a minute, I want to be able to shoot for more than 2 seconds)

M249 SAW is ok but kind of meh, M240 and M2 are both nice, but my personal favorite is the Mk 48. That baby can sing!

Of course then there's the Mk 19 and Mk 47 (now that one is badass) but thats getting out of machine gun territory at that point.

Never fired full auto, but I do like to pull the trigger fast on my Russian SKS.  ;)  I did the magazine mod to take out the lame banana strip slip and replaced it with detachable 30 rounders.  Deep red stock, heavy bayonet and a scope - with a 30 rndr stickin' out the bottom, it looks ... beautiful.  Too bad my scope broke when I had it out this summer.  Lame.  I'm replacing that POS with a Redfield, though.  I'd like to go better than that even, but I can't justify the cost when I have other stuff I need to put glass on still.

One day I think I'd like to check out the shoots at Knob Creek.  Not only do they do day and night full auto, the place is also home to one of the better bourbons out there.  I mean, I wouldn't combine the two, but havin' both in one place is kinda cool.

Well, the story goes the gun has so much recoil that it out-thrusts the A-10s engines. Hold the trigger down too long and the plane would start to fly backwards.

Or they just like odd guns.  I mean, why does everything other people don't 'get' have to have some negative connotation.  You don't understand it.  Instead of looking for a way to make yourself better than the people you don't understand, why not just accept your inability and move on?

I'm not a huge fan of art, really.  That doesn't mean, to me, that guys that are are too in touch with their feminine side or some other snide 'explanation'.  I just don't get why they are and that's fine with me.  I also don't understand the appeal of rap music.  It doesn't mean that the white guys like me that do like rap are trying to be black, it just means I don't get it.  I mean, ****.  This world would be a better place if people could just accept that others don't think the same way they do.  For shame.

While I don't believe the gun could make the plane go backwards, I do know that firing it does slow the plane down.  You can actually see it happen.  What a great gun.

Fun notes from Wiki:

The recoil force of the GAU-8/A[14] is 10,000 pounds-force (45 kN), which is slightly more than the output of one of the A-10's two TF34 engines (9,065 lbf / 40.3 kN each). While this recoil force is significant, in practice cannon fire only slows the aircraft a few miles per hour.

This. I can bring up a modicum of understanding for people carrying a handgun, or something like that. But if you have an anti-tank rifle in your possession, it is not because you intend to defend anything with it. No way is that ever going to work out.

Also, obviously in a theater of war the rules are different, but lets not get into that.

I know, the kick comes from destroying things. It makes you happy that things are being destroyed. That, to me, is pointless. A painting (while boring and not something I spend a lot of time looking at) at least involves creating something. Whether an idea, or something to make you think, or just feel better, or dream away on, is a creation.

Firing a gun is just a means to destroy things. Unless you are trying to create art by shooting holes in things (which, though arguably possible, isn't usually the point) and trying to make people experience something, you are just destroying things for you own pleasure.

To me, that's pointless. Maybe I "don't understand", but needless destruction just isn't something I think should be considered a good thing.

There's a difference between self-defense, killing before others kill you, and destroying things just because. I agree with the first, I'm iffy about the second, and the third is just pointless.

That's more like shooting not to destroy, but to shoot (not necessarily something, if you're an amateur). A sport shooter doesn't  use a Gatling gun or a rocket launcher after all. So naturally it doesn't fall into any of those categories.

But for the time being, lacking arguments to the contrary, I shall continue to believe that destruction for the purpose of destruction is pointless, and that that's where I think the thrill from firing something larger then a regular rifle comes from.

Feel free to tell me it's something else, but unless you can explain why the difference between a pistol and an anti-tank rifle isn't in the amount of stuff it destroys, or the range that it destroys stuff at, I'll continue to label it pointless destruction

But it is a glorious thing to die for what you believe in.

That's just what they want you to think Wink

So yes.  You have decided what is is that gives joy to other people, and then decided to condemn them for your decision, all without actually checking if your initial conclusion was right at all.

Real charitable of you.

Yes, that is best.

No, no, what is best is "to crush your enemies, and hear the lamentations of their women".

1) I am not really a nice person, especially not to people I don't know and still already dislike

2) If someone were to tell me the other thing their enjoyment derives from, I'd gladly change my opinion. I don't mind re-evaluating my views.

Umm, not really.  I'm sure some people get a kick out of destroying things.  Many, though, get their kick from other aspects of target shooting.  Consider this: the only thing you're permitted to destroy at most shooting ranges is paper.  Yep, you get to punch holes in paper.  Now I've done that quite a bit in my day and I can tell you that you certainly don't feel like you're destroying anything.  The kick, then, comes from somewhere else.  Competing against your pals or yourself.  Learning the weapon well enough to make it do what you want it to.  You know, martial arts type stuff.  Of course there's more, too.

Firing a weapon of such large caliber is, to some, a reward in itself.  Especially if you don't actually own one, it's a thrill to do something that will likely amount to a once in a lifetime experience.  I drive to work every day, for example, but would  still be damned thrilled by the prospect of driving a Ferrari around a track.  So there's the allure of the rare.  You've also got people that simply like guns.  They collect them and, therefore, different types and different calibers are par for the course.  It's expanding your experience through your collection.  Personally I find firearms incredibly interesting and have a small collection that features weapons I use (hunting, defense) and some I just don't.  One I haven't shot in years and am unlikely to again any time soon.  All of them, though, satisfy me just by sitting in my safe.  I don't need to blow stuff up - though I have.  That's not what they're for.  I have them because I like them and because I need them.  I'm also very particular about what I buy.  If 'destroying stuff' was the point, I'd just buy whatever cheap ass gun I could find that had a big muzzle.  But it isn't and I don't.  Anyhoo, there's all sorts of reasons to own and fire guns.

Cool, actual reasons Smile Thanks.

Still not things that I really care for, but they do sound a lot better then just wanting to blow stuff up. Lots of people want to collect stuff and/or own expensive things. I somewhat understand why (even though I don't care much for it) and I guess you can look at guns like that.

Oh, and driving a Ferrari around a track is possible... I don't think it's even that expensive. I can find companies here (so yeah, not very useful for you, but hey) that let you drive a Ferrari around a track or city for about 150e per hour. If you're looking for that once in a lifetime thrill, you can probably find one in your area that does the same?

Oh, right, that bit. Whoops.

So, a question, what's everyone's favorite on-screen gratuitous expenditure of ammunition (if any)? I think Arnold is responsible for several of those.

No problem.    I find that you're quite reasonable so being rasonable myself is usually the best course.

Yeah, I know it can be done but haven't looked into it around here.  That and I can't justify the expenditure at this point (savin' for a honeymoon trip thing).  Though if it were for a gun ... ;)

A Ferrari has 2 seats. I'm assuming you have one partner. I see no reason not to make it a part of your honeymoon Tongue out

One can not rule out the possibility of heavy armor knocking on your domicile. Some deranged humans manage to procure armored vehicles and wreck havoc with them. Not that I would want a cannon of such caliber for that specific purpose.

The odds of that happening in the U.S. is very, very slim. LOL

...
That has happened in the U.S. Perhapes the odds of it happening again in the U.S. is slim, but the odds of it happening in the U.S. is 1:1 .

More importantly: when you 'aquire' armored vehicles, they typically lack either funtioning weaponry or ammunition. Quickly riviting your anti-tank rifle to your stolen 'aquiered' tank and having your buddy shoot it for you seems a very promising alternative to somehow convicing a trained tank crew to assist you, and procuring proper ammunition in significant quantities.
