Man, that game rocks! It's done by Bioware, who made KotOR. In this game though, they dropped the 3.5 ed D&D mechanics because the game is a real time third person shooter.

Anyone else wants to talk about the experience they had playing this fine game?

PS (is there a way to use another character's (not shepard) decription skill to open box and chests? and electronics?

Rock ON!

Unlike certain other games who shall remain nameless of my recent aquaintance, Mass Effect did not disappoint. Everything I expect from Bioware. I've been at it, what 22 hours so far; aside from picking up party member no. 6 I've left the main plot and concentrated on doing all the side quests. Jolly marvellous fun...

Just make sure someone else with the appropriate skill level is in your party and you're good to go.

Something I forgot when playing through the game a second time and I needed to repair the Mako and all I had in my party were people that liked to shoot things only.

If you try the romance subplot with either Ashley or Kaidan and Liara, trying to string them both along, be careful. I thought I was maintaining both then the time of decision comes and only Liara showed up. I was kinda annoyed because I really wanted to hook up with Ashley first.

Kaidan annoyed me from the beginning and Ashley's xenophobic spunk was charming.

Mass Effect was one of two reasons I purchased an Xbox 360. The other is Fable 2.

For me it was GTA IV, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, and Fable 2. I am also stoked as hell about the Aliens: Colonial Marines squad-based shooter. That game, in it's first (canceled) incarnation was one of the reasons I bought a PS2.

Just make sure someone else with the appropriate skill level is in your party and you're good to go.

I usually do a two-stage approach to most worlds. I land and explore with my bruisers - Williams and Wrex - until all combat dangers have been nullified. Then it's back to Normandy to swap them out for my E&D (Electronics & Decryption) Team - Kaiden and Tali - for a clean-sweep of all data and equipment. Works pretty well.

Something I forgot when playing through the game a second time and I needed to repair the Mako and all I had in my party were people that liked to shoot things only.

I haven't really had much of an issue with the Mako getting particularly damaged. that's probably cos of how I take on enemies with it, though. I find a nice little piece of cover and then zoom my scope to max. Using the jump-jets I hop up and get a bead on a target. Hop again and drop a canon shot on them. Where hopping is not an option, I scoot out of cover and reverse back into cover instead. Repeat until all enemies are dead. Works like a charm.

I waited for the PC version.

Though I confess I was tempted to an X-Box for this and Naruto: Rise of a Ninja but budgetary requirements prevented it (given how old and crap our dining room telly is it'd require a new TV too).

I went Infiltrator and so I do all the tech stuff myself (partly from prior KotR experience biasing me towards potential XP!) and manage it in a single pass. My party composition is fairly random actually (unusually for me, I usually pick a team and stick with it).

My Mako driving skills utterly suck. I can just about manage to knobble the Thresher Maws, but it ain't easy. I think my TIE Fighter experience tends to kick in otherwise and I have this tendancy to try and make strafing runs...

I'm pretty glad the Mako always rolls onto it's wheels actually, since with the way I drive (right over the mountains in a striaght line) I have actually managed to land upside-down on the deck at least once...

I think my proudest achievement, though, was designing my character's face. My sister commented my Oblivion character looked freakishly bug-eyed, so I'm was quite chuffed with my Mass Effect character because she looks pretty damn cool. (Maybe a touch on the pale side, in retrospect, but meh.) To the point for the first hour or so I was distracted from the actual dialogue because I was admiring my handiwork (which is most uncharacteristic for me!) I went with female since Jennifer Hale is one of my favourite voice actors. She has an awesome-cool voice! That made choosing which gender, for once, a less than arbitary descision right there.

Incidently, how much more of the game is there after the first three plot worlds (whose names escapes me)? Does it unlock many more sidequest worlds or have I done most of the game at this stage? (Frak, I hope not!)

Hmm, I completed the game without being able to open chests... Feels like an idiot... (however, shepard-ashley-wrex just kill so much in combat, shep was a soldier for me)

MASS EFFECT: the only game you'll play where you fight robots, zombies and zergs controlled by Diana Troy. Best game ever? Best game ever.

While being helped by Robot Chicken Director Producer Seth Green. So awesome.

So last night I loaded my save-game from before the fight and sure enough, the previously attempt was bugged. Had no trouble this time - kicked nine kinds of ass.

If there is one thing I can take away from Mass Effect it is the certain knowledge that the creator of the universe got a really good bulk-discount rate on treacherous mountainous terrain. ;)

Finished the game last night. Awesome, truly awesome.

For those who have finished it, some questions about the major choices you made. There will be spoilers - you have been warned…

1) Kaiden or Williams?
2) Human or Asari lover?
3) Save the council or attack Sovereign?
4) Paragon or Renegade?

1) Me, I went Williams. I kept her cos of the love interest, but I think I'd already locked Liara in so it didn't really pan out…

2) …which makes it pretty clear I went Asari. Like they say, "once you go tentacled-haired semi-androgynous blue chick you never go back".

3) Screw the council. My only regret is I couldn't pop a cap in their smug asses myself.

4) Despite my council-hate, I was Paragon. As Paragon as can be, in fact. I think next run-through I'm going to go all Renegade. Unlike KotOR - where the choice was pretty much "good or evil" - Mass Effect's choice are more "nice or ***hole".

Heard about it, but I'll have to read through the stuff to see whether it merits a purchase. Seems good though.

Have you played KotOR? It is basically that (same developer) but bigger and better, and without the Star Wars trappings.

1) Williams got left behind. No way am I leaving a nuke in the hands of Saren.

2) Asari

3) Save the Council. I want to rub it in their smug faces that it took humans to save their bacon.

4) Mostly paragon (enough to get the achievement for it), although I did manage to pick up a few renegade points along the way.

And a question for you:

5) Captain Anderson or Ambassador Udina for council?

The KotoR disks I got were broken (one of them was, the others were scratched). I looked at some trailers. I've played halo, Counter Strike, and oni though.

Anderson. Paragon or not, if I'd been given the option I'd've put two in Udina's chest and one in the forehead without batting an eye.

I've played this game on the xbox360, want the PC version, but an I.T friend is currently investigating my desktop PC as it is randomly crashing just now (definately a hardware issue, just working out which bit of hardware is the problem). Once that's sorted out I'm definately buying the PC version, I think this is an amazing game and I've always been a huge fan of games exactly like this one.

Great game, interesting dialogues and tactical combat. I put in 50 hours before finishing, combing every planet. They put in a lot of effort into the dialogue and storyline, and it shows. Also it irritates me what happened on FOX News. That stupid cow said the game was a sex-fest without even playing it! It is just like FOX news to say rubbish like that. And instead of taking it back, they challenged EA to come on the show and defend it. Then they would have got Bill O'Reilly or another FOX tool to shout down the EA rep, use dodge editing and verbal tricks, to throw more dirt on the game. I don't live in America, but I see sensationalist, ignorant newscasting on our Australian commercial news stations as well.

Awesome game! I've played through a few times (8) and my favorite class is Vanguard (with Singularity as my bonus talent).... Like a Jedi with a shotgun!

I finished it myself last night, after what 45ish hours (I complete everything!)

1) Ashley. I found I barely used Kaiden after I got other people, so he was logical choice. It did however, hurt to have to choose, as I am one of those people who gets all attached to his party. (You should see what I do to traitors - Yoshio from BG 2, lookin' at you...) (I did actually relaod and left Ashley, just to see what happened...)

2) Asari. *Shrug* Why not? Anything that's not human is generally a positive in my book, with the obvious exception of Vampires and Shi-Ar.

It was, like Jade Empire, though, very nice to have a choice. (Though JE still gets the prize for catering to all sexualities.)

3) Being the paragon I was, I saved the council. Yeah, I'm just sad like that when playing good characters.

4) Paragon. Always am good first run through a Bioware (or C&C game).

5) Anderson. Again, no real competition there, Udina is an asshat.

Next run through - in a while, probably after I do my second run through with Jade Empire - I'll go the opposite. (That's what I tend to with Bioware games; first run good, second run evil and abuse the system like crazy. KotR 2 was really fun that way!) So, male Shepard (and so Ashley), Renegade, Udina and probably pure sentinel (I was Inflitrator this time) so I can uses my assault rifles and shotguns.

What I really want to see is what a Quarian looks like without a helmet. Tali was bugging me all game; I really wanted to get that helmet off her. She has a really cool accent too. (Best voice of the main cast in the game, I thought, aside from Jennifer Hale (i.e female Shepard) who's one of my favourite voice actors.)

I always go good/paragon too. As an experiment in KotOR I reloaded my save jsut before you make the big moral shoice at the end of the game and slaughtered my whole crew. That massive dark side hit only dropped me to pefectly neutral.
