| #1Robin_HoodlumSep 24, 2010 23:01:59 | It pretty much sucked. *sigh* Nostalgia got the better of me when I planned it all out. The system is old, and it sucks. It's just .... old and outdated. *shrug* We got a few laughs... One guy was a mutant with morph ability, and picked a crane. Yes. A crane. And the pure human was named Macaroni Jack (off some movie IIRC, and that character died, IIRC). The two mutants were named SamI Am and Colorado Jim. The combat was all wonky... the hit modifiers and AC didn't mesh, and the damage -vs- HP was just... stupid. Even 3.5 is better... It was fun hangin' with the boys after a stressful week of work and drinkin' and smokin', but I don't think we will be playing it again. As we were cleanin' up, we were talkin' 'bout wargaming it some more... But man, I'm tired of A&A, and all the other wargames I have are 2 player, hexagon affairs that takes 8-10 hours to finish. *shrug* We'll figure something out... /blog ![]() |

| #3Robin_HoodlumSep 25, 2010 8:51:17 | I think I am pretty used up as far as RPG's go. Actually, I'm convinced of it and have decided to no longer play RPG's. *shrug* I've not been "feeling" RPGish for the past, oh, 6 months or so... simply not interested anymore, not really having fun. Wargames are my real passion and I look forward to getting back into them on a full time basis. Now, to find some worthy opponents... |

| #5MalcadonSep 25, 2010 13:13:08 | Its an old system, but its not a terrible game because of it. Unlike modern games, the rules gave a basic framework to work with, and it was up to the owner to fill the gaps. You'll see this in how game turns and rounds are written. In a nutshell, its vary open-ended, and leaves much latitude for referees to install their own method (speed, initiative, and such) - they figured most players are already savvy gamers. Its a lot like how older computers have an "open architecture" for users to write their own OS (and you were not bound by annoying "service packs"). By itself, combat is not too bad. Combatants with the highest DEX score declare their action first, but ultimately damage effects kicks in at the end of the round, unless you shoot and kill someone with a melee weapon, so melee fighters or shooters could kill each other in the same round. To-hit is based on the old Chainmail and OD&D Individual Combat Matrix which used Weapon Class vs Armor Class. This make more sense then the usual Level/HD vs AC used in D&D. PCs start-off with a lot of HPs (1d6 per CON), but in the deadly world of GW, they'll need every last point to survive the day! The most cumbersome rule would be tracking Fatigue. This requires the Ref to count-out the rounds of combat, and the players have to remember how long they have to fight before the penalties kicks in (as long as I remember playing the game, I rarely see this rule used). The mutation list is also open for interpretation, and that is a good thing. Say would you will about flow charts (method used to figure-out artifacts). I find them cool, and are rather fun to work with! All-and-all, its a matter of taste. If you like the clean, ordered, and balanced system used in modern games (and the "service packs" that comes with), then this is not your game. If you like loose rules, with room to develop you own methods, then this is your game. |
| #6Robin_HoodlumSep 25, 2010 19:51:40 | I particularly didn't like the disparity between hp and weapon damage. A 1st level PC, mutant, with an 11 CON score has around 33-44 hp. A longsword does 1d8 damage.. A mark IV blaster might do 6d6... Problem is, hp don't change much, if at all, after PC creation, and the PCs only have access to medieval type weaponry and armor at the beginning of the game. Also, with a +1 STR bonus, a PC still needs to hit 6-8 times with the longsword to kill the above mutant. *shrug* The game is not our cup o' tea. But in its defense, it is an old, outdated system. And we think it "leaves a lot to be desired" rather than "If you like loose rules, with room to develop you own methods, then this is your game." *shrug* And it doesn't really matter, as we won't be playing it again... |

| #9Robin_HoodlumSep 28, 2010 17:22:25 | Shouldn't be too much longer until they announce the RPG I have been playtesting. As soon as I am allowed to talk about it, I'll brag a bit as I tell you guys about it... ![]() |
| #10ADHadhSep 29, 2010 4:03:41 | Shouldn't be too much longer until they announce the RPG I have been playtesting. Decades of experience, connections and being loud enough? ;) |
| #11Robin_HoodlumSep 29, 2010 5:14:21 | Shouldn't be too much longer until they announce the RPG I have been playtesting. Yes, I am serious. I was asked. And no, it isn't for WotC. |
| #12Robin_HoodlumSep 29, 2010 17:56:11 | Shouldn't be too much longer until they announce the RPG I have been playtesting. I am a member of their forums and was asked by PM from someone rather high up in the chain of command. I am friends with him as well, although we have never met in person. |
| #13Robin_HoodlumSep 29, 2010 20:17:53 | Before the end of the year. Maybe soon... EDIT. The alpha playtest version is to be released before the end of the year (IIRC), but as soon as they annonce it, I will be able to talk about it, and they should announce it within weeks (we hope!) |
