I just wanted to say Yay! for personal avatars. I drew one today to celebrate. Its just me and my dog.

So have you waited for this, dreading the day or couldnt care less?

While I like how you can choose any avatar you want, I grew rather attached to my old one, so I tracked it down and personalized it only by adding my psudonym to the corner.

I thought it would be cool if we could have our own avatars but figured it would never happen. Now they wanted us to have avatars so I first just uploaded a picture of Richard's eye from the webcomic LFG. I then changed that after a few hrs to a picture of Sir Schmoopy of Awesometon from the webcartoon Unforgotten Realms. Now after I was able to get a few pics up I started trying out the different pics and finally decided to settle on this lass that is squatting while looking out of this skeleton while it is still halfway in the ground. I'm liking how it looks as an avatar which is cool cuz I really like the pic. I'm now really liking this use your own avatar thing. I'm glad they made it a new feature.

You used to recognice frequent posters instantly by their avatars, I guess that I don't have to adjust to a new one for you Owls.

I was a little surprised to see the lack of built in avatars when logging into the new forum.  Going from a selection of like 1000 to so few.  At first I picked the avatar I first picked on the old forum, Ajani Vengent.  I figured that with such a small selection their would be so many other people with the same avatar... unlike the old site.  Like I guessed, I have seen the series of Ajani avatars all over the new forum.

So, searched the Goggle and random pictures I had and found a good one.  The origin of my nickname/screenname/gamertag/bnetaccount whatever you want to call it.  Kind of makes me want to change any/all of my other forum avatars to this one.

I did origninally find the lack of ready to go avatars annoying and disappointin, but now I like it :P

You can't use Gif's for an avatar. I think the only supported format is jpeg.

yeah about that. I think the only time I saw something like that mentioned is when I was doing all the necessary stuff to my profile when I logged in. I however can't find anywhere where it says what kind of files you can upload and what kind you can use for an avatar. I did just now try putting the gif as my avatar and I got like an error type response or something. I wish it would have like a little note of what file types were accepted.

I liked my old avatar... it was almost a status symbol, that I had been around so long that I had an avatar that you could no longer select.  Didn't really worry about a personalized avatar.

With the option, though... well, now all my forum and art accounts (Y!, FA, DA, and half a dozen different forums throughout the web) have the same avatar (though some have a different cropping of it) which is a crop of a picture I made.

So now it's really my own.  And if I ever see someone with it first I'll feel happy that they liked it enough to steal it and then I'll yell at them for stealing it.

I have the most awesome avatar on the boards. Truth.

(Currently it's Vartan Hai Sylvar from the old Forgotten Realms comic they did back in '89-'90.)

Oddly I can't seem to find the list of pre-made avatars anymore. I wasn't using them anyway, sure, but still weird.

Yes but Gene Wilder had an endearing quality about him that Depp did not have. It's all a matter of opinion, but I whole heartedly believe that Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory is better than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. A lot of childhood memories with that one.

Depp is a great actor.  I would never see that kiddy movie he made, but he's done some amazing stuff.  Srsly.  Stuff like Dead Man, Blow, Donnie Brasco, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (can't wait for The Rum Diary!) etc, etc, etc ... he's really good.  Not to take anything away from Wilder.  Than man had some serious acting chops, too.

Ah, the Onion (source material).  Kinda' miss my old one cuz' it was rare(r) I suppose.  And yes, it was quicker to zero you guys per your images than handles.

Personalized avatars, demi-gods, and aspects are nice, but I'd kill for the "Find all Post by 'X'" button.  I'm sure there's a million bells and whistles I'm just not finding now.  Sigs included though I must confess, the pages are shorter, do I really need more fluff/filler no one cares about before upping to a new page (a lot more frequently now).

Advice, recommendations, recipes, blueprints?

I'm goofy about that stuff.  There's pics of me around here (that I'm sure someone will dig up shortly), but I don't like to post 'em.  If it wasn't for a drunken idea I had at a bachelor party, no pics of me would be posted here at all.  Tongue out

ZB: I'm terrible with blogs and crap. I never update any of them. I had a myspace for a while but I've not done anything with it in a year or so. I might actually do stuff with this one though since this one I can just blog about gaming, and the horrible experiences and funny experiences I have while doing it.

I'm just not too motivated to put anything in that stuff.  Here is a li'l better, though, cuz it's more of a networking place for internet personas that people got to know - if that makes any sense.

I almost never send out emails so a few months back I got something from yahoo saying that I needed to respond to their message or else they'd assume my account was inactive and close it. I'm on my email everyday. I just almost never send out emails.

My main email gets activity every day.  I don't usually send anything out, though.  Occasionally my fiancee will send me something from work, but that's about it.

The lack of custom avatars on the old forums was the main reason I didn't have one before, since this is the only one I ever use anywhere...  It was slightly annoying to have to crop it a bit, though...

I took that pic, though, so it's all sorts of cool - that's the hat I actually wear all the time, and the cast-resin skull was a b-day present from my brother. Cool

#134

dirtyfrank

Sep 07, 2009 11:44:26

If the wand is suppose to be a phallus symbol then it would break section 2 of the CoC (look below). basically it would be considered to be masking of obscene, pornographic and/or sexually explicit content.

2. Do not use, post, distribute or link to obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit, graphically or gratuitously violent, derogatory, demeaning, malicious, defamatory, abusive, offensive, hateful or discriminatory language or content. This includes "masking" language by using alternative characters/spelling /spacing to get around profanity filters or claims of profanity filter “testing."

Sep 07, 2009 11:50:19

Phallus symbol?  Oh yeah... like swords, towers, staves, rods, castles, the Eiffel Tower, the Washington Monument...

Something being a "phallus symbol" really isn't enough to get someone banned unless you're getting way too close to toeing the line.

A plain wand?  Even if you give a wink and a nudge, that really isn't even close to the line.

I agree but a phallus symbol being a barbarian swinging a large sword is a lot different than a barbarian holding a sword like it's his wang.

A plain wand?  Even if you give a wink and a nudge, that really isn't even close to the line.

Depends how you look at it. It is a wand at the base of the book centered and pointing out into the middle of the air. it isn't resting or leaning against the book. it was purposely positioned where it is. ex: this innuendo in explanation for the pic by the pic's creator "(psst, Idhriniel, thats a wand... (if you knowwhat I mean lol, (think about that))". it was purposely put there as a masking of something sexual which is against the CoC.

*shrug*  I didn't say covering your face wasn't good for an assassin.  We were talking about hair color.  If you have identifying hair color, or hair color you don't think is "cool" enough for an assassin, then covering it up is the way to go.

Though I think it's funny when an assassin doesn't cover his/her hair.  The look should be, IMO, head-to-toe covering.  But that's just me.

I think the best thing an assassin could do as far as hair is keep whatever hair they have under a very good cap.  And then wear a real human-hair wig on top.  That way when those CSI people say "aha!  a strand of hair!  let's go to way-simplified crime lab that magically has records on anyone ever to find out who it is!" they end up accusing some Tibetan monk halfway around the world that's been growing and cutting his hair for religious reasons.

depends on what kind of assassin. if you are to be a ninja or stealth type assassin then having anything that is easily seen, flashy or recognizable is not good for you. hair however can be bundled up and covered. However not all assassins are about stealth. Some are all about being seen so that they can get easy access to their target. when the time is right they can strike and then vanish never to be heard from again (changes disguise).

You can make your name look right by editing the name you used for your profile.  Simply edit you profile to show the name as you'd like it to.  For some reason, if your name there differs from your screenname, it gets screwed up.  Mine used to say 'Steve'.  When I changed it to Zombie_Babies, it finally looked right.

Sep 16, 2009 7:27:29

So I had a weird dream last night.  In the dream I came to the forums this morning and found that my avatar had been replaced with one of their default ones and I had a new e-mail from them saying "We changed your avatar due to a copyright complaint, yadda yadda yadda  We take these complaints very seriously yadda yadda yadda"

To which I, of course, responded "... well this is certainly a creative way to try to steal my copyright.  Gimme their name so I can break their kneecaps for trying.  This image is 100% mine, and any douche that trys to say otherwise is either malicious or stupid (not exclusive) and needs to be educated."

And then I woke up.

Makes me wonder if there is a way to report someone's avatar on copyright grounds.  If so... there's a heck of a lot of people that could potentially be reported.  I mean, how many people do you believe actually got permission from the copyright holder before using their image here as an avatar?  It certainly doesn't count as a parody in most cases, and I don't think this qualifies as fair use... hrm...

#201

dirtyfrank

Sep 16, 2009 9:29:17

I guess you're a bit right or whatnot.

Anyways it all sort of depends upon the artist. If I was all arty and had a bunch of stuff I'd be a bit flattered seeing people using my works for different things on the net. I'd also see it as advertisement especially if it was artwork that I was looking to sell. Of course not everyone is like that. I could always go and find the DA page my avatar is from and link to it to give the artist props, which would help them get some more DA traffic or whatnot. That would be cool I guess.

IIRC, there's some bit someplace about making sure you're allowed to use whatever pic you choose to.  So it's on us to be sure we're permitted to use the image we choose.  I honestly don't know if mine is ok or not.  But I am one lazy bastard.

Public domain + personal Photoshop use = win

If it's public domain, sure.  But most of the stuff you'll find on the internet... isn't.  Fact is that nothing in the US "automatically" becomes public domain anymore.  So unless something is specifically stated by the rights-owner, it's not.

Anyway, not trying to make anyone paranoid.  It's just an amusing (to me) thought.

Meh, those on DA that don't want people using their work usualy have that annoying DA stuff over the pic and the same thing with many other sites.

And that in no way equivaletes to permission.  Just because someone isn't paranoid yet to watermark their images doesn't mean other people have permission to use their work.

Nope it doesn't but they should understand that if they are to show their work then someone is likely to take it and especially so on the internet.

Then I'm not really sure why and what you're arguing, as I never said anything to the contrary to that.

You can pick up free legal fantasy avatars

Here
www.allavatars.com/about.php

And yes artist usually prefers to be asked for permission before people use their work. When it comes to avatars permission is usually granted as long as its only resized and cropped. So painted on bunny ears on their cool picture is usually a no no.

When it come to other copyright stuff like pictures from movies, companies generally dont care since there's no money in avatars anyway.

It certainly doesn't count as a parody in most cases, and I don't think this qualifies as fair use... hrm...

Actually, WoTC is the copy right holder of your avatar, atleast under their old rules. (I don;t know if they changed the EULA or not with the new forums.) Anything you upload to their site becomes their legal intellectual property to do with as they see fit.

@ Frida: What about pictures of stuffed animals that sit attop my home monitor for the last 8 years, and zoomed in + narrowly croped pictures of flames? Do I need to get a picture taker and bust out with some personal fire pictures? (Please say yes, please say yes, please say yes....)

Thats not quite it, you are still the copyright holder but they can use the picture or whatever as they see fit.
I think that that term is only there so that they wont get sued if someone claims that Wizards have stolen some idea that a user have posted on the forum.

What on earth is a picture taker? But I guess you would have to ask your little froggy how it would like to be depicted.

Ok! well then, Toasted Ampfibian: you must to go out and make a bon fire, right this minute and take some pictures of it. If not the person who took the picture you used will come to your house and beat you up.

Interesting proposal.  I'll counter with this: You give me $50 and I'll make Tub Girl my avvy for 2 minutes.  I'll also give you $50 to make goatse your avvy for two minutes.  Deal?

Ah!  Then I suppose you'll be ok with giving both of us $50 for the privilege of making Lemon Party your avvy for two minutes, right?

I haz the bestest avatar eber!

QFT!

But the pun probably wasn't intended:

"Eber" (apart from a cute, nasal "ever") means "boar" in German - you know: a male pig!

So the only competition (I can think of) to the title "bestest avatar eber" would have been Rumplestix old avatar that isn't around any more. ;)

Damn, knew there was something I forgot...

Jack: Hey Jack, can I have your permission to use that picture?

Jack: Um, dude... You're me.

Jack: Oh, like that's ever prevented you from starting an argument with me about something...
