This movie has everything, from excellent casting, a well written plot, very well handled CG action, hell it's even got a semi romance sub plot.
The story is very much about the heroes coming together, but not in a campy stupid sort of way but in a realistic down to earth fashion. When the heroes finally put their differences aside, the motivation behind it was very compelling. The chemistry between the cast was fantastic and you get the impression that everyone very much enjoyed working together.
As I missed Captain America (I plan on rectifying this mistake shortly), I was especially surprised with Cap's performance. Usually he is handled so badly in movies and tv, but the writers and the actor nailed him, perfectly. In a fight with Gods, captain is prepared with nothing more than a shield to lay all it all on the line if he has to, and yet he does not do it blindly he understands full well that he's frankly out matched but he has to try.
The Hulk, I'm not sure how I feel about as his actor seems to change film to film, however in full on green mode they hit what modern hulk has become in comics very nicely, very animalistic, primal and full of fury, with a spark of intelligence and cunning enough for him to most of the time at least know right from wrong.
Iron Man, Robert Downy Jr delivers yet another amazing performance, and shows Tony's growth as a character really well in this series.
Thor, was actually more likable, and more relatable here in this movie than his own title and showed alot of charisma that could make you believe that yes he will be an awesome king.
Hawkeye and black widow's story arc was incredibly well handled, and I have to admit I was skeptical at first about them belonging in this weight class of the other super heroes, I was worried that they wouldn't get a chance to really shine, but they still shine brilliantly.
Loki of course, is handled perfectly yet again and the parallels between himself and Stark were very well handled.
Seriously this is going to be the movie of the year.

Eh, I'll most likely be watching Captain America sometime this week and seeing The Avengers this weekend, so I should be able to put forth a more well-informed opinion on the subject then.

Which is exactly what would happen to Tony Stark, Bruce Bqanner, or Captain America. Don't forget, GM can change his size at will (and not in the D&D sense), so he can AVOID the arrow or bullet by shrinking, or make it hit a less-vital area by growing.

Actually Iron Man could take it like a champ, while as Tony he's still mortal at least he's not vulnerable in his hero form, and is actually you know... capable of taking on heavy weights. Cap would block it with his shield. Also, Bruce? He's tried to kill himself by shooting himself in the face before, the green guy saved him.

I'm pretty sure the Hulk could wipe the floor with all of the other Avengers at once. He does so in the EHM cartoon and they didn't skip on Ant-Man/Giant-Man or Wasp (they don't have Black Widow tough; Black Panther wasn't an Avenger yet).
