| #2pluisjenMay 10, 2011 8:40:20 | That was pretty stupid. I thought they taught kids to be careful around sandpits when they were kids. I know that's what they taught me and I don't live anywhere near a beach. |
| #3Cpt_MichaMay 10, 2011 8:48:43 | I'm not sure how this happened? Can someone explain? |
| #4pluisjenMay 10, 2011 8:52:55 | It sounds like this guy dug a 7ft deep pit on a beach and then for fun jumped in from the top. Which, considering this is loose sand, will cause it to collapse and makes you vanish under a large amount of sand. So then somebody had to come over to dig him out. |
| #5zombie_babiesMay 10, 2011 9:28:16 | Derp. |
| #6eratoMay 10, 2011 9:56:54 | It sounds like this guy dug a 7ft deep pit on a beach and then for fun jumped in from the top. But how did he dig a 7 ft hole without standing in it ![]() |
| #7Cpt_MichaMay 10, 2011 9:59:56 | I just came back to this thread, and I still have this very question, Erato. Did he climb out and then jump in? |
| #8pluisjenMay 10, 2011 10:18:06 | Probably. If you are careful, then the pit will stay as it is. If you are not careful, it collapses. He could've also used a shovel. You can get pretty deep with one if you try. |
| #9MaxpersonMay 10, 2011 10:26:21 | You don't have to dig too deep in order to hit wet sand and wet sand doesn't slip as easily as dry sand. He probably was inside the pit digging in wet send and eventually climbed out carefully. However, the edges of the pit were probably drying in the sun and weakened so that when he jumped back in, the sides collapsed. That's my theory anyway ![]() |
| #10MaxpersonMay 10, 2011 11:40:28 | The guy is 19, is Aryen and is in Olympic shape. Why was he spending his time on a beach digging a 7 ft hole instead of flirting with girls? At 19 digging holes is still fun AND it might impress the girls if it's big enough and at the beach where girls in bikinis will wander by all day long. |
| #11Cpt_MichaMay 10, 2011 11:41:10 | Thank you Max, you beat me to it.![]() Damnit. Now I have to go to work. |
| #12zombie_babiesMay 10, 2011 11:44:10 | At 19 digging holes is still fun AND it might impress the girls if it's big enough and at the beach where girls in bikinis will wander by all day long. Incorrect. It was the beginnings of a pit trap designed to catch said girls. All he needed was a beach towel. The jump he made into it that started his problems was a proof of concept and a true test. If it collapsed he may be facing murder or manslaughter charges instead of just kidnapping. |
| #13MaxpersonMay 10, 2011 13:01:55 | So I was wrong all this time. Girls are impress by large holes. Yes, but guys aren't ;) |

| #15MaxpersonMay 10, 2011 13:28:47 | [all the good jokes have already been done] Heh. The oldest known joke dates back to 1900 BC and is a fart joke. The next oldest dates back to 1600 BC and is a sex joke. Some things never change. |
| #16ADHadhMay 11, 2011 15:48:22 | Judging by his name he's not going to help fight the stereotype much. |
| #17Mad_JackMay 11, 2011 16:35:00 | [all the good jokes have already been done] Hell, they're still three short of my father's family - there were seventeen kids altogether... (Yay, Irish Catholics!) ![]() (Although there were only seven still alive when the family came to America back in the '30's - my uncle was born on the boat over, and my father was the youngest and only one born a US citizen.) On the physics of working with sand and the 7-ft. deep hole, sand that isn't perfectly dry tends to hold together surprisingly well due to surface tension when packed tightly - and as maxperson said, you only have to dig down about two feet on most beaches to start finding moist sand. The tricky thing is, however, that as soon as you break the surface tension of the sand it's all over unless you somehow supported the sides of the pit. Digging a 7-ft. deep hole before it collapsed was actually quite an accomplishment. Not having realized during an entire freaking day of digging that the damn thing was going to collapse if he messed around with it, not so much, lol... |
