| #2sallaOct 31, 2009 21:10:05 | I do. |
| #3Fox_ReeveheartOct 31, 2009 21:16:55 | I know it's beating a dead horse but it's too commercialized now. When I saw holiday commercials at the beginning of october this year I was so mad.
If it could be enforced i'd be for a law that outlaws holiday commercials until thanksgiving or the day after.
Only good thing of the holidays is thanksgiving, money, and christmas dinners I think the last GREAT gift I remember going nuts for was my nintendo 64 o_o WAY back. I remember getting my ps2 that year it came out and I remember being amazed by the graphics but for some reason I just wasn't that crazy-go-nuts about it when i first got it. That 64 though... whoa boy. |
| #4KlirshonOct 31, 2009 21:20:11 | I don't mind the holidays, its the commercialism that gets me the most. Especially when I worked as a grocery stocker... I hate those Hallmark® commercials with the singing cards... |
| #5owls_and_more_owlsOct 31, 2009 21:20:34 | I can't stand them. All that physical or social interaction with people really irks me. |
| #6mechnarkOct 31, 2009 21:20:36 | I'd the Grinch in the family, not a fan of any kind of Holiday really. Still, I participate for the sake of my loved ones, and sometimes I even manage to get into the swing of things. On occasion. {wink} |
| #7graffitizooOct 31, 2009 22:18:08 | Holidays are only really great when you're young. There's just so much excitement and everything seems so wonderful. I'm barely a grown up now, but I miss that feeling.
I still love the holidays, though. I'm not a fan of the commercialization, but the underlying thought is still there for me. I dunno. I guess I'm naive, but good feelings seem much more... apparent. Especially around Thanksgiving. |
| #8calronmoonflowerOct 31, 2009 23:22:33 | Who else loaths the holidays?
Dang, I'm not going to have to visit you on Christmas Eve, am I.

|
| #9archyneirOct 31, 2009 23:28:32 | Aw, come on! The Holidays are great fun. Family, friends, life, laughter, booze, candy and presents. What's not too love eh? |
| #10death_isthe_beginingNov 01, 2009 4:15:25 | Decorating the house and yard the $300.00+ that you have to spend around Christmas.Actually the thing I hate about Christmas is the Charlie Brown movie that always crop up this time of year. I HATE CHARLIE BROWN MOVIES!!!!
That said I love scaring people on Halloween and love it when I receive a gift on Christmas. |
| #11RUMPLESTIXNov 01, 2009 15:09:28 | The holidays are awesome.
Spending time with my family.
Jack Frost and Rudolph and the Grinch.
Thanksgiving dinner. Christmas dinner. New Year's Day dinner. Turkey, egg nog, ham. Mmm.
Did I mention spending time with my family?
People being nice to each other.
A white Christmas.
Remembering what is important. Did I mention family and being nice to others?
Christmas lights and decorations.
College football bowl season.
Recognizing what we have to be thankful for and giving that thanks...
All in all, I say that the holiday season is pretty good, IMO. |
| #12EscherEnigmaNov 01, 2009 17:02:56 | Holidays? The only reason I even knew it was halloween this year was because of this board. I'll probably forget about Thanksgiving until that Thursday when I get a call asking wehre the hell I am and why am I not down in TorC with the rest of the family. Christmas? I'll probably notice that, but only because class was over for about a week and a half at that point.
So yeah. Holidays. You don't notice them, no matter the advertising, if you don't have the time. Speaking of which, I need to finish some data structures. |

Agreed. I love the holidays, even if the commercialism is at times overwhelming. |
| #14Cpt_MichaNov 02, 2009 11:14:52 | I like the concept of the holidays. People give each other gifts!
That being said.... Christmas should not be trouncing all over Halloween. Stupid Kmart is stupid.
I hate that Xmas season starts, the moment you approach mid october. |
| #15dirtyfrankNov 02, 2009 11:45:24 | Who else loaths the holidays?
Loath might be too strong of a word. maybe strongly dislike.
the holidays especially suck when ya never ever have no money especially when the other option is to either be alone or gather with family cuz man can family really suck. So yeah, no money means either no presents or crappy presents. To me personally holidays just seem like a lose-lose time of year. It's just a few months of the year that one must learn to suffer through each year. |
| #16death_isthe_beginingNov 03, 2009 5:18:35 | I have never had a a sucky family. (and for those that didn't catch it) period. |
| #17_jayne_cobb_Nov 03, 2009 9:15:23 | It's the one time of year that people act towards one another as they truly wish to all the time, where people live up to their idealized selves. The fact that some act as miserable curmudgeonly **** is very telling about the nature of their true persona. |

Funny I experience the exact opposite I think people are at their worst or close to it around the Holiday Season. |

Then I pity you the miserable, unpleasant people with whom you are unlikley enough to associate. |
| #20zombie_babiesNov 03, 2009 9:48:54 | I don't like the holidays much at all. I'm just not a people person and I'm incredibly uncomfortable during periods of time that require me to show my feelings. I really get uncomfortable in those sort of situations. I mean like really uncomfortable. But people like me are encouraged to leave our comfort zones during the holidays. Hell, we're expected to. The idea that maybe it's not exactly in the holiday spirit to force people into the holiday spirit that are terribly uncomfortable in those situations seems to be totally missed. So those like me suffer for the sake of those unlike us. And that's 100% a-ok. Cuz it's the holidays. In other words, the holidays are just as **** to people as any other time. They're just **** to people that other people don't care all that much about being **** to. ;)
I really don't like the idea of gifts. At all. I get all weird when someone gives me a gift. I worry too much about getting the right thing for someone else. I can't stand the idea of having my picture taken for the most part. It bothers me immensely. I get that from my grandmother and feel it's a connection to her and one that I'd not like to lose. Seeing relatives I've not seen for a year bothers me. If you didn't see me or communicate with me for a year, I don't matter all that much to you. I'm perfectly ok with that. Let's not lie to each other, k? But the damn holidays force all of this crap on me. So I don't like it. And that's ok, too. It doesn't make me some **** or jerk or whatever. It makes me me. I'm not harming anyone. I don't ask to be excluded from any holiday activites and I greet them with a brave face. I don't even whine about it (this post is an exception). This holiday season, try and remember that the greatest gift you're given likely comes from a person like me. Someone that puts aside their immense discomfort for your sake. Don't thank us, though. Cuz we'd likely be terribly uncomfortable in that situation, too. ;) For those of you that think people like myself are some kind of ass or are the antithesis of the holiday spirit, I urge you to re-evaluate your position because we are the definition of it - silent personal sacrifice for the benefit of those we care about. I also urge you to **** off. There's nothing wrong with me. :P |

This little speech is something beautiful, I disagree with it but that does not make it any less beautiful. |

Hrm? So what is it you disagree with? Just curious ... :D |
| #23death_isthe_beginingNov 03, 2009 15:27:09 | First and foremost I think your lying about your shyness(the gift version not everyday version), I could be wrong but that sort of shyness is almost the exact opposite of what you act like here.
And just because someone doesn't see you most of the year does not mean they don't care(they still like you regardless of how often they see you).
One last thing, it seems allot like your describing me right up to the part where you get embarrassed by receiving a gift which I simply cannot fathom. |

Why would I lie about something like that? And why would I lie here?
I know it's odd, but it's something that I honest to god experience. I know other people that are the same way and it's another thing I firmly believe I got from my grandmother. It's just something that makes me uncomfortable and I am bothered by the whole situation.
You chose an interesting word in this segment as well: 'Act'. As a matter of fact, I frequently experiment with goofball personas here and that may well have given an inaccurate perception of who I am. I do that in some of my day to day life, too. It's much more obviously a game in RL, though, of course.
And just because someone doesn't see you most of the year does not mean they don't care(they still like you regardless of how often they see you).
If they cared, they'd call. Honestly, if they knew me and cared, they'd leave me the hell alone. :P Sure they care, but the whole interaction thing feels forced. That's because it is.
One last thing, it seems allot like your describing me right up to the part where you get embarrassed by receiving a gift which I simply cannot fathom.
Well, as sad as I am for you that you're anything like even a part of me, I'm glad you don't also have that to deal with. :P |
| #25death_isthe_beginingNov 03, 2009 15:47:11 | I understand embarrassment but I can't ever remember experiencing it(not even in dreams). It's something I understand, but don't understand what causes it. |

You've never felt embarrassed? You must live one hell of a charmed life. Or your brain is ... missing something. :P |

I'm inclined to think this as I've things happen to me that would embarrass others |
| #28_jayne_cobb_Nov 03, 2009 15:53:28 | It is an odd thing but I have come to realize that, as one gets older, it really does become better to give than to receive. Stuff if fine and all, but it is far more gratifying to make someone you care about happy. |

Heh. Well, here's to missin' brain stuff! Lord knows I'm a few screws short of a bushel.

Yar. That it be.
I still prefer to be left alone, though. Kind of tough bein' a human an' all, but what-evs. |

Some great stuff there.
Ya know, the one gift I've always asked for has never ever been given to me. Not once have people just left me alone on the holidays. Ever. It's a holiday so all I wanna do is relax. That means me, by myself, just layin' back and relaxin' for a full damn day with no worries. I don't want gifts, I don't want to give out gifts, no pics please, don't really wanna see or hang with the family*. Really all I'd like for a holiday is for me to just relax all alone with no human contact. That means no texts or calls and no b****ing when I don't answer or respond. For once I'd just like one day where I can fell like I'm the only person in existence. Just me kickin' back with no worries. Why, ya might ask? Because people suck, that's why.
*except for the family gatherings means lots of free food of which some of it is good so I guess there is some good in suffering. |
| #31Mad_JackNov 08, 2009 6:38:24 | Eh, I don't celebrate holidays... For the most part, I never notice the holiday season except for about the last two weeks before Christmas when everyone is freaking out about it to the point where their public behavior (mostly on the roads) manages to intrude past my complete disinterest. My grand Christmas tradition is generally going to see a movie on Christmas Eve so I can watch it on a big screen in a completely empty theater, and my one "concession" to the "holiday spirit" is listening to my TSO cd's slightly more often than usual.
Overall, I generally find the whole holiday season to be irrelevant to my existence, other than being an occasional minor inconvenience due to banks and stores being closed on days they'd normally be open. |
