So I had a lot of changes in my life and D&D got pushed aside for a while and I stopped visiting the community. With things calming down a bit, my group and I are getting back in the swing of things.

Having logged on for the first time in 6 months (or more, I'm not really sure) I'm just asking if there have been any big (or small but important) changes that I should be aware of.

Thanks and happy gaming!

Wooaaah boy. Will you be surprised.

When it comes to the OTT, we had some bans recently while as a whole it consolidated more... but I think the bans, even temporal, worked well, as we have some less active or new OTTers posting more.
Just watch out for a stooge or two.

are you talking about when someone kept getting banned yet had multiple accounts to post from?

I don't usually respond to stooges posting and don't reply on threads that are only leading to flame wars. I usually spend my time on "What's a DM/Player to do" boards.

You should look in 4e General and ask about the  Essential line and it's impact on the game. It is the new design philosophy for 4e. Simpler classes. Well builts actually. No new classes for now, just alternative builts. Some like, others do not.

Also ask about the DDI and the improvement do to it. Like the new CB and the (re)announced VTT.

Also the Abyssal Plague was announced. Not much info on this. It is a multiple worlds (FR, Dark Sun, yes it is back, and PoLand) event.

Ravenloft is the new world for next year.

And I like pickles.

Martial classes are simpler, yes, and the Essential classes stick to their roles more. But it's hard to tell if the game itself is any simpler; it is a weird amalgamation of 4e and elements of 3.5 now.

Cool. I'll head over there now and see what I can learn. I usually create my own worlds so Ravenloft holds little appeal to me.

Oh, and I like pickles too.

Does cohexistence of pre-essentials and essential cause problems or is it just the learning curb?

I think it's the former; it's hard to imagine them working together perfectly with drastic changes on fundamental level (like feats).

I wonder, is combat with an essential class faster? This could create some problems at the table if during combat if the turn of the players with old school classes is longer. It might make the players playing essential classes like they are sitting on the bench.

I don't think so, but I have no first hand experience.
