The Death Knight already has paragon paths, and a supplement, and almost 3,000 views.

EDIT: Added links for stuff on forums, but not for Bacon Burst, those are in my sig.

Paragon Paths for my custom classes WILL NOT have their own link, they are in the class's own thread.

And I already did, and you quoted my statement that says I have.

Kids and Their Stinkin' Katanas

I'm fed up with this "katana fanboi-ism". They're overrated and terrible swords. You want a stabbing sword? Get a longsword. You want a slashing sword? Get a scimitar. You want a parrying blade? A dagger is better. God help you if you parry with a katana. Katanas are folded like 15~20 times at most, which is why they're technically folded 1,000 times. Katanas were used in Japan (and were actually good there) because the troops didn't wear metal armor and there was little metal for a solid blade.[/rant]

Don't forget that they are actually ceremonial swords and have likely been used more often for ritual suicide than combat.

Actually they were used in combat quite a bit, but samurai used bows and polearms more often.

Katanas suck. I've researched it a bit, and like Pig Knight said, they prefered Polearms and Bows. Of course, there will always be those who say that Katanas deal 5d20 points of damage and make awesome sounds when swung. But they're silly. Anyone with sense knows that is the stats of a Lightsaber. And there will always be those who are so infatuated with Japanese history/culture/whatever that they will ignore the excellent points made by Doomsought and PigKnight. Really, I think a Longsword is more practical. It's thicker, and I think that makes it more difficult to break. (I really don't know. I need to read up on medeival weapons) But Katanas break VERY VERY easily. Why get a sword that may or may not properly block/deflect the blade coming at you?

Yeah, I know they draw 'em really fast. I was just trying to think of another argument. Maybe I'll go on about how easily the blade shattered instead. Time to edit.

Actually they were used in combat quite a bit, but samurai used bows and polearms more often.

That depends on the era. The more peaceful periods from the Tokugawa Shogunate onward, samurai were required to carry the two swords and warfare was fairly uncommon. Since the swords were easily at hand and the primary use was in correcting the breach of custom by an unarmed and unarmored peasantry, the katana was perfect. During previous eras, the spear and bow were the preferred weapons and sumurai might not even own a sword.

Who would've thought I'd ever use that bit of useless history?

The thickness of the sword does not equate to it's resistance to shear stress, a.k.a. resistance to being broken by pressure or a hit. You see, metals are cristals. They are formed of periodically organised atoms "sharing" a number of electrons (a little simplified view, but it works fine for what we are discussing). Since it is organised, there are planes of atoms that are easily slided, causing defects (called dislocations) that will lead to bond breaking. You can even see that the thickness is irrelevant, only the few bonds breakings at the edge of the plane are important. Thus, it is generally easy to break a pure monocrystallin metal, no matter it's thickness.

That is why blacksmithes learned pretty fast to plunge the heated metal in water. A rapid cooling of the metal causes heterogeneous cristallin growth. Hence, the blade is not one cristal, but a sum of small amalgamated crystals. That is why the blades get "chipped". Only small portions, corresponding to the dimension of one monocrystal in the blade, get torn out from the blade. Thus, the blades are more robust. Now, the thickness as a certain influence, the more monocrystal that are contained, the better the sword will resist. But it is still not equated to shear resistance, since a thinner blade could have smaller monocrystals.

As a last note, I want to mention the Damas Swords. They are fabled as the strongest swords ever forged. Modern imaging techniques have found that carbon nanotubes are embedded in these swords. Carbon nanotubes are small tubes made of rolled up graphene sheets. They possess the highest tensil strength, maybe even higher then diamond. These tubes could prevent cracks, just like the metal armatures put in concrete. Pretty neat stuff.

That does sound interesting. Hmm. I'm gonna take a look at that stuff. (btw, my whole thing where I was talking crap about katanas wasn't serious. They're cool swords)

The physics of the metallurgy is really amazing if you look at the history as well. Considering the culture, religion and technology level of the time, the japanese skill in making steel of such a high grade is phenomenal.

It's a fictional character. A rockstar with a secret identity of an average high school kid, if my understanding is correct. Portrayed by the daughter of that mullet-headed, neo-country music star Billy Ray Virus. Apparently after his star faded, his daughter's was on the rise.

**IN-CHARACTER**
Lorethiel crept through the shadows, as silent as any drow elf on the prowl. She tips a dart in drow sleeping poison. With a barely audible click, the miniature quarrel thuds into its target: Baneofelves. Without wasting any time, Lorethiel stalks up to her target and draws a long, wicked dagger. In moments, the blade is at Baneofelves's throat, and a bloody smile is drawn with the point, slicing the windpipe and all major blood vessels.
At least it would be a swift death.

**END OF IN-CHARACTER**

Oh, sorry, did my OTTAA character's alter-ego come up from behind and kill you? HA!

**Written in first-person style, like a book.**
"Don't be so hasty to hate. I'm not an elf-lover anyways...I just favor them as a race. But," I said, walking up to him, "not everything is as it seems." My finger traced his jawline, and it felt as if his muscles were straining not to twitch.
