I don't think I've ever before played a game where fighting a large group of enemies felt so fluid and so comfortable, where the controls were so simple and streamlined yet simple button-mashing will not suffice, where combos are fluid and contextual rather than needing to memorize arcane button combos. You really get a feel for what a total badass Batman really is. I normally hesitate to use this word as it is rarely applicable in combat-heavy games, and it seems especially odd in a game where you are beating ten flavours of hell out of hundreds of generic mooks, but the fighting really is elegant. What makes this game so fantastic, though, is that it doesn't rely just on visceral hand-to-hand combat. The sequences where you've got to take out armed thugs, darting in and out of shadows, striking and vanishing, are just as exciting, as are the stealthy bits and silent take-downs. The fact that all of these are melded into a single unbroken whole rather than clumsily chopped into distinct action or stealth sequences is masterful. This game is brilliant. Easily one of the best of '09. |
