| #1Pyrate_JibJul 31, 2009 8:16:38 | Why do you suppose people interact with others differently on various online forums than they do in face to face conversations? I refer to all forums not just the the WOTC forums. It appears that often polite conduct is abandoned at the key board. People write things they would never say in a face to face conversation for fear of reprisal. I have an idea that some folks are a little more mischievous and like to provoke others online. Since they are protected behind an online name and an avatar no one can discover who they are. It is easier to yell something obscene out of a car window in a big city than a small town where everyone knows your name and address. Your thoughts? |
| #2KlirshonJul 31, 2009 8:59:05 | It is true that the anonymity does entice the mischievious behavior online. The two main consequences that they'll see is having their posts modified/deleted or being banned temporarily/permanently. Wow, that will sure teach them a lesson... pfft, fat-chance when they got the whole internet to explore and wreck havock upon. Just go check out 4chan if you want to see some real crazy... 'shtuff'. There is a reason some might call it a bottomless pit. Then again... maybe some of them are like this with non-virtual socialities... I know I act similarly online as I do with friends of mine. |
| #3pigknightJul 31, 2009 11:17:48 | I act pretty much the same actually. |
| #4EscherEnigmaJul 31, 2009 11:53:19 | I like to think that my behavior doesn't significantly change online, if anything I become more... deliberate... in that I can ponder my words before posting them, rather then just flying off the handle and yelling at some misreable idiot who has incurred my righteous wrath. But with the internet, I get to see my words, and consider them, and if I can't think straight (laugh it up) then I can walk away until I can. So if anything, I find that the medium of the internet actually acts as a moderating influence on me. This also means that when I *do* fly off the handle it's either someone *really* got to me, or it's a very deliberate flying off the handle. But yes, the whole aspect of anonymity without consequences makes many people feel like they can act out all their childish and less-considered impulses. |
| #5pigknightJul 31, 2009 11:59:18 | Haha! You said handle. :P |
| #6archyneirJul 31, 2009 12:14:57 | It's the interweb mate, not much for it one way or the other. I try to keep my head down, my mind open and my fingers restrained; seems to keep me out of trouble now and then. Best I can hope for when you have so many nutters and ego's flying around willy nilly. |
| #7EscherEnigmaJul 31, 2009 12:28:21 | It's the interweb mate, not much for it one way or the other. | #8archyneirJul 31, 2009 12:57:58 | No one mister, honest! |
| #9TheMonkJul 31, 2009 16:12:32 | Well it' already been explained above so yeah...there's no reprisal so people think they can say anything. Many such people just don't understand that they are interacting with real people who have a real feelings. Personally, I behave the same way on the internet as I do in real life. Because I don't wanna be one of those people who think they can do anything just because they're anonymous. Especially when it comes to insulting people. That's a big no-no for me personally, although there are always exception in every case. |
| #10pigknightJul 31, 2009 16:13:53 | I find it easier to RP on the internet. |
| #11KillerGMJul 31, 2009 16:20:46 | I'm actually more polite on the internet than I would be otherwise. Not being able to see the confused hurt in someone's eyes when I effectively eviscerate them with my razor wit leaves the whole experience lacking. |
| #12pigknightJul 31, 2009 16:21:37 | :O |
| #13owls_and_more_owlsJul 31, 2009 16:31:00 | I'm the same on the internet as I am in real life. As you can imagine, I don't have many friends. |
| #14pigknightJul 31, 2009 16:33:35 | Do people assume you're a girl? |
| #15subsistcyberJul 31, 2009 16:37:43 | Owls isn't a girl? ![]() |

| #18ekazielJul 31, 2009 16:59:12 | I pray to the Electronic Gods that you had decent anti-virus protection, and had the noggin enough to update your adware app. And if you start throwing out Trojan's, well maybe next time you'll learn to protect your junk with a sizable amount of cooling fans. Sheesh. I hope you didn't breed spam or anything... |

| #22ekazielJul 31, 2009 17:15:02 | - I sense a disturbance in the Genderforce. |
| #23baneofelvesJul 31, 2009 17:17:47 |
I'm also not sure if I'm a guy anymore. I can't tell if I'm a dood or a chick no more. What do all of you think? What am I? |
| #24ekazielJul 31, 2009 17:19:29 | You, my good Thing, am clearly a Thing. From a lagoon. Possibly black, but maybe green with yellowish spots and egg-like odour. |
| #25baneofelvesJul 31, 2009 17:20:42 | You, my good Thing, am clearly a Thing. From a lagoon. Possibly black, but maybe green with yellowish spots and egg-like odour. Not egg. More like........rotten steak. |
| #26EscherEnigmaJul 31, 2009 17:23:43 | Hehehe... I am as mysterious as I am enigmatic. Hey, I'm the only enigma allowed around here! |
| #27ekazielJul 31, 2009 17:23:44 | I would watch out for werewolves then, rotten steak is a delicacy amoung the ravenous creatures of the nights. So, better add vampires, zombies and rats to that list for good measure. |
| #28turalisjJul 31, 2009 17:24:22 | I like to think that my behavior doesn't significantly change online, if anything I become more... deliberate... in that I can ponder my words before posting them, rather then just flying off the handle and yelling at some misreable idiot who has incurred my righteous wrath. Meh, about the same here. In RL, especialy with long drawn out talking, you don't get the chance to think through what you say. Online, with forums atleast, you have time to think about what you are going to say next and even go back and change something that might be offensive. |
| #29baneofelvesJul 31, 2009 17:24:41 | No, I think I smell like a rotten baneofelves. That is my stench. |
| #30owls_and_more_owlsJul 31, 2009 17:27:22 | Hey, I'm the only enigma allowed around here! Haha, I'm changing my name to OwlsEnigma. |

| #36EscherEnigmaJul 31, 2009 17:41:39 | ... I want you all to know that I've pondered this response for a long time, and feel that this best encompasses my feelings on this matter. This is, in fact, a very deliberate and careful selection of words. Bite me. |
| #37baneofelvesJul 31, 2009 17:42:13 | I will. Oh, I will. |
| #38pigknightJul 31, 2009 17:42:18 | Bite's Escher. |

| #45baneofelvesJul 31, 2009 17:47:18 | Sorry Baney-Boy, but you're not my type. Aren't I baney-boyo? So, I got my ear pierced two days ago, and all the staff at the place I'm living at *****ed me out so much about it that I just decided to take it out. That pisses me off. They were talking crap like I was an idiot and that I wasn't "using the common sense that I'm *famous* for" Yeah, they actually said it like that. I'm convinced that they're idiots. And one of the staff wants to have ANOTHER discussion about it with me. ![]() |
| #46baneofelvesJul 31, 2009 17:47:55 | ... Right... ok, who'se been slipping liquor to the boy? No one. |
| #47ekazielJul 31, 2009 17:57:55 | I've never understood people and their fallacy against piercings. I only have two left from my original count of thirty; a labret and a small plug in my left ear. I've had my eyebrow done (several times), lower/upper lip, nose, bullring, nipple ring and, at one point, a "down there" ring. Over the years I've taken them out either by choice or if the situation forced me too, but never because someone didn't like it/them, and never not of my own free will. I like my labret and plug, including my various tattoos (ink and fleshscar), and screw the hypercritical, over analytical, self-ignorant weenies who say otherwise. :D |
| #48pigknightJul 31, 2009 17:58:54 | Does a "down-there" ring set off airport sensors? |
| #49ekazielJul 31, 2009 18:01:05 | Does a "down-there" ring set off airport sensors? Oddly enough, yeah it did the one time I was going to Vancouver to see a relative. I had taken out most of my dozen plus at that point, but I had completely forgotten to take out the "down there" one. It took five minutes before they could summon a female guard to stick her hand down there and check to see if I wasn't lying. None of them believed me when I said "It's just a piercing!" |

I don't need to give anyone an excuse to ***** at me: they already do it enough. I can't wait for when Mike calls me in his office to talk about it, and he sees that it isn't there. What ****ing irritated me was the way that everyone was staring at my ear, looking for it so they could lecture me. |
| #51KillerGMJul 31, 2009 18:01:28 | I don't see why, unless it's made out of a lot of metal. Most body piercing jewelry is no bigger than normal earrings (and some are much smaller). "Normal jewelry" doesn't set off metal detectors. I don't see why the same amount of metal elsewhere would. EDIT: Of course, sometimes normal jewelry does set them off, so the above story is possible. |

| #55ekazielJul 31, 2009 18:06:04 | You're a girl!? The avatar threw me off. Uh, no. 100% Canadian bred testosterone. The only reason they fetched a female guard is because I told them I'd sue them and their fancy airline if anyone other then a gal shoved her hand down my pants in the middle of the danged airport. I can be a persuasive ass when the need arises, I even debated just whipping off the drawers at one point, but thought the counter-suit against me just wasn't worth it. :P |
| #56pigknightJul 31, 2009 18:07:23 | :O If you told me that I would've gotten a fat guy to check. |

| #63pigknightJul 31, 2009 18:12:40 | God forbid a guy touch you down there, for any reason - you might get THE GAY! I'd prefer a guy searching down there. 'Cause once I had a hot lady doctor. I might be just as fetching if I managed to catch "THE GAY" one of these days. My apologies if I sounded sexist or such, not my intention. In my only (meager) defense, I was only seventeen at the time and of course "King of the World" comes to mind at that age. A world at my beck and call, and a temper to match the roughest bastard alive. Oh yes, I was a delightful little scamp back then. Now I'm a bit older, a bit wiser, and a bit more humble and saddened by my past actions as it were. |

| #78ekazielJul 31, 2009 18:33:48 | An ex girlfriend of mine tapered her ears to be pointed, and being 6'1 helps quite a bit, with long golden brown hair as well, bright blue eyes. We tease her by saying that she never has to dress up for Halloween, or when she plays D&D. |
| #79EscherEnigmaJul 31, 2009 18:43:40 | I'm just confused on why they accepted shoving anyone's hands down your pants. Seems like the best thing to do is go to a private room, pull down the pants and just look, no touching required. |
| #80ekazielJul 31, 2009 18:46:56 | I'm not sure about that either, even after all these years. I think, based off a hypothesis, that these were fresh recruits trying to bust down on people and look intimidating. Considering the amount of piercings, tattoos and my clothes at the time, I can image seeing myself as an imposing figure worth of a " public beatdown" in order to bolster some security weenies confidence and have some water-cooler talk later on with "the boys". Didn't work out too well for either of them though. |
| #81EscherEnigmaJul 31, 2009 18:50:23 | Or heck, better yet, just say "Fine, I'll be back in a minute, just let me take it out" |

| #83EscherEnigmaJul 31, 2009 18:53:11 | ... I'd ask just *why* it takes so long to take out a piercing, but I'm already getting images in my head of jacob's ladders and so I really don't need to hear any more. I'll just take your word for it. |

| #91ekazielAug 01, 2009 12:14:12 | Interesting. Are these bans directed? On purpose I should say? Or merely a more outspoken member of what is supposed to be the "docile flock"? |
| #92turalisjAug 01, 2009 12:29:27 | He does this on purpose, like an ADHD kid egging the principle's car to get attention. |
| #93ekazielAug 01, 2009 13:28:25 | Stands to reason, I have ADHD myself, I was diagnosed when I was just a wee one. My attention span ranges from the meek to the extreme, something I've learned to deal with as I've gotten older. Perhaps a spot of meditative healing is in order to quell the urges of the non-attention disordered? I know it works for me at least, and online forums I try my utmost to be respectable and keep things from getting personally upsetting. No sense getting angry with someone I've never met farther then my computer screen after all, I can channel that energy into better avenues. |
| #94EscherEnigmaAug 01, 2009 13:43:42 | Hater, you don't get banned for having views. What you get banned for is the way you express them. |
| #951_ton_ghostAug 01, 2009 14:00:49 | Lot of that goin' on... When I was green here (still am probably), the systematic ass rippings from builds, f'ing builds, was enough to make a prize fighter blanch. Didn't understand why ppl would get so up in arms about 'x' vs. 'y'. I mean, damn, it was quantifiable data, not qualifiable material like politics, religion, etc. I understand (not accept) why ppl get hot over current events and the like, but simple numbers and strategic design? Laughable... More than a few I've known signed on, got their heads handed to them, or simply couldn't abide all the pettiness, and consequently, gravitated away from gaming as a whole. Essentially, the asses that are huge proponents of gaming here that don't know how to come correct, are reactionary, stupid, intolerant, etc., are doing more dmg to their precious community than good by driving away fresh blood that helps the #'s grow. Short of it is egocentrism vs. the collective. Too short-sighted to see that in their fervor for 'x', they're actually taking away rather than contributing. I can understand a ban for blasting someone for condoning a terror attack, mocking your faith, demeaning your good name, etc. I can't understand getting banned for mouthing off about why your Ftr is superior to someone else's. |
| #96EscherEnigmaAug 01, 2009 14:18:07 | What? Yep, pretty much. To maintain a civil discussion you have to keep those things in check. And before you start grousing about that, this isn't something special to the WotC forums. Civil discussion, in order to remain civil, requires all parties to check the passion down to a more manageable level. The only difference here is that you'll get banned for being too loud, especially if you cross the line from discussing ideas to discussing people (which you do, often enough). And I wouldn't call you a "little" aggressive. |
| #97KillerGMAug 01, 2009 14:38:41 | Yep, pretty much. To maintain a civil discussion you have to keep those things in check. +1. Not just for The_HATED, but in general. |

U⋅to⋅pi⋅a – noun 1. an imaginary island described in Sir Thomas More's Utopia (1516) as enjoying perfection in law, politics, etc. 2. (usually lowercase) an ideal place or state. 3. (usually lowercase) any visionary system of political or social perfection. ;) Like your players? :D Exactly! :D |
| #103pigknightAug 02, 2009 1:56:18 | Holy s***. By going off-topic we came back on topic. |
| #104samyueruAug 02, 2009 7:31:44 | I didn't do anything "on purpose". That bold part? Nothing to do with it. You get banned because you post things that are in violation of the CoC (politics, religion, current affairs, etc.) Whether or not people disagree or agree with your views is irrelevant. You are violating the CoC, that's why you get banned. |
| #105RUMPLESTIXAug 02, 2009 9:13:12 | I believe that a previous post needs to be amended...![]() That bold part? Nothing to do with it. You get banned because you post things that are in violation of the CoC (politics, religion, current affairs, etc.) The way things are supposed to be are not necessarliy the way that things are. |
| #106matukalAug 02, 2009 10:08:27 | U⋅to⋅pi⋅a Also a portmanteau of the prefix "eu-" (which means "no," referring to something nonexistent) and the word topos (which means "place"). Both words come from Ancient Greek. |
| #107samyueruAug 02, 2009 10:39:21 | Yeah... for the most part. And this is an example of behaviour that will get you banned. Political discussion ("liberal") and baiting ("whinny liberal") and claiming that what you posted wasn't against the CoC, it was, the CoC specifically forbids discussion of politics and religion, both of which you have spoken about in the past, and by your own admission been "on the banned wagon". It has nothing to do with people disagreeing with you from a CoC standpoint, regardless of anyones political affiliation. |
| #108samyueruAug 02, 2009 10:41:41 | I believe that a previous post needs to be amended... Well, considering HATED is not beyond jumping up and down on the forums claiming that he has been banned, and telling us all it's because jumped up liberals disagree with him and nothing more, my point stands. He was banned for political discussion, whether or not people on the boards disagreed or agreed with his stance doesn't matter, political discussion is against the CoC, and carries with it a temporary suspension of posting privileges. That's how it goes. |
| #109ekazielAug 02, 2009 11:02:41 | I'm not sure HATED is completely in the "no-no" here, after all it's how one chooses to interpret a comment that makes that comment(s) in the "bad". Especially in real life where body language and tone of voice come into play, it's the saying of "It's not what you say, but how you say it." While I can certainly see comments like "liberals" and "whiny liberals" to be baiting of a nature, when I read those lines I didn't feel offended or agitated, and I am very much a liberal-minded person. I have no objections to the opinions of others as long as they are civil, and though "whiny liberals" could certainly get under someone Else's skin, I chose to take HATED's comments at face value; as merely a descriptive value that he see's by his own comparison, not simply an attempt at baiting someone else. Ah, the joy's of civil discussion! :D |
| #110RUMPLESTIXAug 02, 2009 14:52:57 | Well, considering HATED is not beyond jumping up and down on the forums claiming that he has been banned, and telling us all it's because jumped up liberals disagree with him and nothing more, my point stands. Actually, the point that I was making is slightly skewed from that being taken into account here. But, I will drop it. |

| #114toastedamphibianAug 03, 2009 21:26:51 | My family tends to be very sarcastic as a whole. In person I generally find it very easy to tell if someone is being sarcastic or not. On the internet, when most people are not sure if someone is being serious or not, they default to serious, as that is their mental standard. In the absensce of evidence, I tend to assume people are being sarcastic, playfull, or generally disingenuous. Sometimes this causes uniententionally hurt feelings. However, I like to think that once people get to know how I am a bit, I come off as fairly polite. At the very least, I avoid taking anything too seriously, but then I tend to do that in real life too. Strange how the things that get you yelled at in real life, and the things that get you yelled at on the internet, can be so completly inverted. |
| #115dirtyfrankAug 03, 2009 21:40:21 | Why do you suppose people interact with others differently on various online forums than they do in face to face conversations? I refer to all forums not just the the WOTC forums. It appears that often polite conduct is abandoned at the key board. People write things they would never say in a face to face conversation for fear of reprisal. Because there is not a person standing in from of them that will beat their ass after they spew their drivel. Yes, I'm finding these boards so boring that this is the first time I've actually clicked on this thread let alone considered clicking on it. Actually I'm not even sure I knew it existed before a few minutes ago. I'm still trying to figure out were all the other threads here in the OTT have come from but then I remember I'm hardly ever here anymore. And no I don't plan on torturing myself by reading through the whole thing to figure out what I didn't miss out on... though I doubt anybody was going to say anything about it anyways. |

| #139Pyrate_JibAug 04, 2009 8:34:49 | Well, I find that just about anyone is capable of acting immature online, even if in the real world their stand-up kinda people. For whatever reasons those may be: immaturity, self-loathing, peer pressure, ego, self esteem, etc.. It would be nice to find a forum page free of that behavior, but that's like asking your garden gnome to lead you to their secret trinket collection they've stole from the lawn: You speak the truth. I am all for a good debate. I think we all are. I have no problem with subjects that maybe taboo. I respect people who are passionate about certain topics. So many people are not engaged in anything... they just drift through life asleep and do the same thing everyone else does (watch American Idol, where the same clothes, listen the same radio stations, eat the same type of boring pizza). It appears that things get ugly when one of 2 things seem to happen. Someone takes offense at something and goes Postal or someone decides that it is time to stir up a little mischief and post a few things just to anger people. Then people get banned from a forum. But can they return under another alias? Of course. I do think that many people will not say what they would like to say in a face to face conversation because they know the outcome of discussion will reflect poorly upon themselves. |
| #140Pyrate_JibAug 04, 2009 8:37:33 | I have a question for "The Hated" about this topic. You may have some great insight (+8) to forum behavior. When you drove the Banned Wagon what was the reason behind your exile? Do the forum Gods let you know or did you guess? Lastly, did you feel it was fair? |
| #141orc_ceilidhsAug 04, 2009 10:56:22 | Hi. I had to remove some content from this thread because it violates the Code of Conduct, and to preserve continuity. | #148zombie_babiesAug 05, 2009 9:34:16 | Looks like a couple of my posts got poofed. I can't understand this. They were in no way offensive and one was actually a repost of what someone else posted in a different part of the boards. Wow. |

| #150EscherEnigmaAug 05, 2009 17:37:22 | Hrm... I haven't been part of that club yet. Gotten plenty of deleted posts, but not banned yet. | #154EscherEnigmaAug 05, 2009 18:21:44 | No they didn't complain about it. They reported it and it was edited by the mods. And then I changed it back, except that the last word of the first line (which was so offensive that CS wouldn't even say which one it was, only referring to it by it's place in the lne) is now GLEEMAX!. I blame the system where no matter how many times something is implictely approved of just one complaint means it's suddenly taboo. |
| #155owls_and_more_owlsAug 05, 2009 18:28:29 | And how long have you had this signature? At least as long as I've been here. I can't believe that they removed it from a single complaint after all this time. |
| #156baneofelvesAug 05, 2009 18:29:48 | Wonder when they'll change mine. |
| #157EscherEnigmaAug 05, 2009 18:45:13 | Owls_and_More_Owls I know. Seriously. Mods have seen that signature without complaint, Webster has seen that signature without complaint, and I'm pretty sure the person that reported it has seen it for months without complaint. It's not like it was subtle, and I've referenced it more then once in both forums that I post most often in. But what can you do? baneofelves Well Baney-boyo, someone has to report your sig before they'll care, so as long as you don't **** off any vindictive [color=green]GLEEMAX![/green]s, you should be fine. |
| #158matukalAug 05, 2009 18:48:54 | Owls_and_More_Owls Edit it back. |
| #159EscherEnigmaAug 05, 2009 18:51:14 | I would, except that I'm pretty sure it would get reported again and at that point there would be two reports for the same thing, so they'd probably just ban me or something and quite frankly it's not important enough. Of course, this leaves us in the strange situation where you can't describe what triggers Sleeping Beauty's curse... |
| #160matukalAug 05, 2009 18:59:55 | So who did you **** off? |

| #163turalisjAug 05, 2009 21:22:20 | And then I changed it back, except that the last word of the first line (which was so offensive that CS wouldn't even say which one it was, only referring to it by it's place in the lne) is now GLEEMAX!. JUST LIKE SOCIETY TODAY! It just takes one extremist with enough money to screw something over. |
| #164zombie_babiesAug 06, 2009 9:07:22 | Of course, this leaves us in the strange situation where you can't describe what triggers Sleeping Beauty's curse... Yep. And we're still left roostering our crossbows. This place is goofy. |

| #218zombie_babiesAug 07, 2009 9:37:41 | No. Elderly retired autoworker were-turtles that moved to St Myers beach to relax but are forced into a war they were not expecting with teenage were-barracuda that came down from Cape Hatteras after their parents kicked them out for not paying rent and being generally lazy in general that found a common bond with each other in the tough, half-were-shark half-were-tuna filled waters near the oil rigs off the Gulf Coast and then expanded to Ft Myers with a new influx of disenfranchised teen were-barracudas causing the resident were-starfish nothing but headaches that they were ill-equipped to deal with before the arrival of said retired autoworker were-turtles. -Moe Rahn EDIT: I think I just nailed Siffy's next summer blockbuster. Pay me, *****es! |

| #223subsistcyberAug 07, 2009 9:48:58 | Throw in a were-cat midget and I might agree... |
| #224zombie_babiesAug 07, 2009 9:54:29 | I'm not sure I can do that. Were-cat midgets have rights of their own, you know (and they prefer 'were-cat puntables', just sos you're aware ;)). Howsabout 10%, a writer's credit and a Key Grip credit (don't worry, you won't have to do the work. you're a writer now, kiddo!)? |
