I have an idea that some folks are a little more mischievous and like to provoke others online. Since they are protected behind an online name and an avatar no one can discover who they are. It is easier to yell something obscene out of a car window in a big city than a small town where everyone knows your name and address.
Your thoughts?
Then again... maybe some of them are like this with non-virtual socialities... I know I act similarly online as I do with friends of mine.
But with the internet, I get to see my words, and consider them, and if I can't think straight (laugh it up) then I can walk away until I can. So if anything, I find that the medium of the internet actually acts as a moderating influence on me.
This also means that when I *do* fly off the handle it's either someone *really* got to me, or it's a very deliberate flying off the handle.
But yes, the whole aspect of anonymity without consequences makes many people feel like they can act out all their childish and less-considered impulses.
It's the interweb mate, not much for it one way or the other. I try to keep my head down, my mind open and my fingers restrained; seems to keep me out of trouble now and then. Best I can hope for when you have so many nutters and ego's flying around willy nilly.
Especially when it comes to insulting people. That's a big no-no for me personally, although there are always exception in every case.
Not being able to see the confused hurt in someone's eyes when I effectively eviscerate them with my razor wit leaves the whole experience lacking.
As you can imagine, I don't have many friends.

Meh, about the same here. In RL, especialy with long drawn out talking, you don't get the chance to think through what you say. Online, with forums atleast, you have time to think about what you are going to say next and even go back and change something that might be offensive.

I had taken out most of my dozen plus at that point, but I had completely forgotten to take out the "down there" one. It took five minutes before they could summon a female guard to stick her hand down there and check to see if I wasn't lying. None of them believed me when I said

I've never understood people and their fallacy against piercings. I only have two left from my original count of thirty; a labret and a small plug in my left ear. I've had my eyebrow done (several times), lower/upper lip, nose, bullring, nipple ring and, at one point, a "down there" ring. Over the years I've taken them out either by choice or if the situation forced me too, but never because someone didn't like it/them, and never not of my own free will.

Most body piercing jewelry is no bigger than normal earrings (and some are much smaller). "Normal jewelry" doesn't set off metal detectors. I don't see why the same amount of metal elsewhere would.
EDIT: Of course, sometimes normal jewelry does set them off, so the above story is possible.

When I was green here (still am probably), the systematic ass rippings from builds, f'ing builds, was enough to make a prize fighter blanch. It appears that often polite conduct is abandoned at the key board. People write things they would never say in a face to face conversation for fear of reprisal.

I am all for a good debate. I think we all are. I have no problem with subjects that maybe taboo. I respect people who are passionate about certain topics. So many people are not engaged in anything... they just drift through life asleep and do the same thing everyone else does (watch American Idol, where the same clothes, listen the same radio stations, eat the same type of boring pizza).
It appears that things get ugly when one of 2 things seem to happen. Someone takes offense at something and goes Postal or someone decides that it is time to stir up a little mischief and post a few things just to anger people.
Then people get banned from a forum. But can they return under another alias? Of course.
I do think that many people will not say what they would like to say in a face to face conversation because they know the outcome of discussion will reflect poorly upon themselves.
When you drove the Banned Wagon what was the reason behind your exile? Do the forum Gods let you know or did you guess? Lastly, did you feel it was fair?
