That's pretty cold... mommy shoots daddy 11 times (five times with his revolver, and when that was empty, another six times with his glock) and both kids agree that it's the best possible outcome.

I can't say I blame the woman. It still sucks, but I can totally understand her.
Nobody cares about justice. I mean, why the hell ask the judge to disallow the psychiatric evidence? Why try to hide things from the jury? The prosecutor wants to win more than he wants to find the truth. This is 'law'. It's 'justice'. It's how our legal system 'works'. If anything about this story is more disgusting than the behavior of this man, it's the way this whole thing is shaping up.

I mean, the woman killed the guy. That's murder. And from what it sounds like a traditional "self defense" might not be that strong a claim1. But it sounds like the bastard deserved it. So it's also justice.
I dunno. The law probably says she should be locked away, but I'm not sure that would serve any purpose. The purpose of a prison is (depending on your perspective) to punish the guilty2, to seperate the dangerous3, and to rehabilitate the damaged4.
So yeah. I don't know what justice is in this case. Doubt any judgement would sit right with me.

From the way the article puts it, and from how long the case has dragged, I suspect she was in no immediate threat. Also, that they want to explain the "frame of mind" of someone suffering long abuse... makes it sound like she was in no immediate danger, making a traditional "self defense" plea a bit shaky.
2Doesn't sound like she deserves punishment to me. Probably shouldn't be celebrated, but I can't say the woman deserves to be punished for what she did either.

4While she may be "damaged", prison isn't the kind of rehabilitation she needs, if she needs any.
Good on her. I hope the jury sees through the prosecution's games and lets her go free. After that, she needs to change her name and her home, because cops, esp. NYC cops, won't forget what she did, and may (probably will) try and exact vengeance on her for killing one of their own.
Can't say I know what that would mean for this case, though.
Oh yeah, it's a mess alright - and I'm with you 100% on the rest of your post, too. The thing that made me say that was this prosecutor trying to prevent pertinent evidence from being presented to the jury. I mean, how can justice have any chance if all of the facts of the matter aren't there for those tasked with determining guilt to see? Meh.
