Interesting stuff, kinda scary too if you think about it, I mean what happens to all that matter sucked in by the black hole? It just adds to the black holes mass right? Which would then make it pull in even more matter, making it even bigger, pulling in more matter, and theres a super massive black hole at the center of our galaxy? That sucks man, get it? I said sucks haha. Any way over time we could possibly get pulled in, who knows? Maybe black holes at some point reach a critical mass and expel all that matter or whatever? Maybe thats how the big bang happened, the Universe before this one got sucked into black holes, and then blamo! I dunno, some weird wiggy stuff. |

Now if everything is expanding outward from the big bang at a constant speed, then how is it that we could even collide with another galaxy that should be moving away from us at the same speed we are moving towards it? Or for that matter, after the Big Bang how did all these atoms and particles and what not even join together to form Nebulas and stars and planets and such if they would all be flying out in all directions at a constant speed? Knowhatimean? |

The more mass that is added to a celestial body the faster it spins. The faster it spins the harder it is for it to obtain more mass. Super massive black holes are spinning so fast that they more often then not push things away rather than absorbing them. Um basically they're almost spinning too fast to absorb anything despite being super massive and having a huge gravitational pull. Much of the absorbed matter never really gets pulled into the black hole but instead travels along the event horizon and is ejected along the poles in usually gama ray jets. It is also believe that much of the matter (and light/energy) that goes within the event horizon just orbits the black hole and doesn't actually become a part of it. So basically orbiting at around the speed of light. I don't know the specifics about it but I have heard that black holes do slowly eject mass and so eventually they would die out but that would be like a billion or trillion year process. There is a theory that eventually the gravity of black holes will overcome the speed at which matter in the universe expands, and that everthing will be crushed together, eventually causing another Big Bang to happen. Yeah the Big Crunch is mostly a dead theory but it does have some hope. Right now it's a talk of balance between dark energy and dark matter and which one will eventually win out. Most believe dark energy will win and the universe will just keep expanding. Knowhatimean? The Andromeda is in our local galaxy cluster so it is bound to us by dark matter (basically gravity) but everything outside of our galaxy cluster is moving away from us. After the big bang things spread out enough to cool things enough to start forming matter. The first few elements were created. It was dense enough that much of it bound together. So like molecules and dust clouds. Large globs attract more stuff. It slowly gets bigger and thus gets more biggerer. You eventually get stars and junk. So even though the universe is expanding it isn't expanding fast enough to prevent 2 objects near each other from coming near each other. |

String theory has some interesting implications for that thought, like putting a minimum size on the universe and its weird inverse properties where an expanding universe has the same properties as a collapsing one. Also, I seem to remember that it wasn't just a matter of the black holes but the gravity generated by all matter in the universe that could cause it to collapse. |

Not enough gravity density i don't think. There is hypothesis about there being a max size for the universe as well as shape and once the universe reaches that size the edges of the universe will basically be large mirrors so by looking at the edges we can see our past (because well looking light years away we're looking at light that is billions of years old). Sucks to be that race... Yeah. I've never heard of there being more than 1 time dimension and most of what I've heard it can only progress forward or rather in the direction of increased entropy. Current theories allow for wormholes through space but not time. But this is of course if you are one of the physicists that believe in time. Some believe there is no time and it's all spacial dimensions. There are some that believe that it's just a time dimension and that spacial dimensions are either illusions or just happen to be there but aren't necessary for the universe to exist. |

Sorta interesting, coulda had a little more info in there, like how he came to these conclusions in the first place, or why cant there be a singularity at the center of the "fuzz ball", and really all we have to go on is theories and speculations, its not like we can just go to a black hole and study it, but still some interesting stuff. And I'm curious RM, are you really interested in the article, or did you just want a reason to post fuzzy balls, haha. |

It's about string theory but by necessity also covers quantum mechanics and general and special relativity. It goes into more detail about it and explain the law of increasing entropy which is the basis for this theory, along with quantum foam and other fun stuff that ties into it. |

I'm watching this show called unique Sweets while, and when I read quatum foam, I got slightly confused and thought "that sounds tasty." |

Not even the leading physicists in the field understand the theory in its entirety. Most of them don't even understand large parts of it. The theory is so complicated they don't even know the equations that they need to solve it. Most of their math is done by approximations. |

Usually with wacky theories (like stuff like string theory* (especially since the math is incomprehensible**)) the only person or so that comprehends it in its entirety is the founder. Some of their colleges will understand parts of it. Many will understand much of the foundations since well you have to know that just to be a physicist. With stuff like this stuff in that last link it's hard to really get into any of it in a manner that those without a PHD in physics would be able to understand it. All the stuff they mentioned was basically lower division modern physics so pretty simple and basic stuff. IDk about you guys but with the information the fuzzy balls article had it gave zero insight to the whole idea on black holes. As far as that hypothesis goes it basically said nothing. Well it said something but with an extreme lack of support so was as good as nothing. *shrug* Anyways point is if you even want a chance of understanding the proposed hypothesis it would be best done with a PHD in physics. Without such it will just sound like they're talking about cotton candy. ![]() _______________ *way out there wacky stuff like string theory is generally laughed at by most of the scientific community as a waste of time. **the general theme with physics is that if the math is too difficult to model then it's likely wrong. This tends to hold true like 99% of the time. Of course with relativistic stuff things do get harder, but when the math gets so hard that it's not worth or impossible to solve*** let along get started it is generally a sign that you're going in the wrong direction. One of the big reasons why something like string theory isn't taken too seriously within the scientific community. ***It's a huge system of very difficult equations which is hard in and of itself but there are also a plethora of different string theories. On top of that it is really one of the only fields in physics that has no way of being proven by experiments currently or in the foreseeable future. |

Yes, but when the theory is so complicated that they can't even figure out the math that goes with it (much less solve it), it's probably pretty hard to grasp. Even relativity and quantum mechanics were said to be nearly impossible for most scientists to truly and completely understand. And in the case of string theory, there is no single founder to grasp all the main aspects. There are actually several different main branches of string theory, which sprouted from earlier attempts by other individuals, not to mention incorporating elements of supergravity and other theories. |
