Board and/or console game recommendations?

Okay, I'm looking for some new games that I can play with my wife. So I figured this would be a good place to get some suggestions on games. We normally play video games together but I also wanted to play more board games since my normal group doesn't seem to like Starcraft: the boardgame, Risk, or Axis and Allies as much anymore.

Video game
Obviously, it should be a two player game. A multiplayer cooperative campaign would be ideal. Also, since my wife isn't too great at certain games, the game should either be not overly difficult or one in which one player (myself) can pick up LOTS of the slack. Mindless killing is also a plus (either shooting or hack and slash).

Some games that we've played together and enjoyed include the following:
LEGO games
X-Men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance series
Dynasty Warriors 6, Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires
Left4Dead
Halo 2 (although I didn't like it as much as Halo; I also heard Halo 3 isn't as good)
Rock Band series

I think Left4Dead 2 would actually be a pretty good game to get since its cooperative, relatively mindless, and easy, but I'm kind of just waiting for a friend to get it so I can borrow it. I remember thinking Left4Dead was a little on the short side so I don't really want to buy it.

Board game
Obviously, again this game should be a good two player game. Many games can be played two player, but most of them just are bad with only two players (like almost all strategy games). If possible, it'd be nice to find some sort of game that's kind of cooperative. I saw that Fantasy Flight Games had a LOTRs game which was cooperative, but it was out of print. Something like that would be excellent.

But if the game isn't cooperative, it at least shouldn't be a game like Risk where you can pretty much tell who's going to win hours before the game actually ends. We play stuff like Stratego, chess, Chinese chess, etc but I kind of want something new.

Any suggestions?

My girlfriend and I really enjoy the game "Jambo"

It's two player only, head-to-head, but it's pretty hard to determine who's going to win until maybe 2 turns before it's over, and even then things can change quickly.

(It's also one of the few games in which I generally lose, which might be why she's enjoying it)

Have you considered Dungeons&Dragons Online? It's basically just another MMOG with a D&D flavor, and excellent for co-op. We occasionaly play it together.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I forgot about the Rock Band games; we play those quite a bit (I just added that to the original post).

I'll definately read up on those recommended games. I guess I'll also ask my wife to see what she'll like boardgame-wise. Some of them seem like they could be fun, but I'm sure she'll have more of a say on what we play than I do (primarily because I can play most anything that's "good").

For DDO, we technically have two computers, but her laptop is pretty old. We pretty much use my computer for everything gamewise and she just uses her laptop for basic stuff like music, reading, pictures, etc. I would have definately tried that if she had a better computer.

Back at university my wife (then girlfriend) and I used to have a blast playing Diablo together at the computer lab. Even a janky old laptop should be able to handle that one.

One video game that hasn't been suggested is Borderlands.  It's a lot like Diablo II, and it's a lot of fun.

My husband and I also enjoy playing co-op games (we played all on your list, except Guitar Hero instead of Rock Band).  Halo 3 was a lot of fun, IMO.

Also, the Call of Duty and Rainbow Six games are pretty fun co-op as well.

I'm not terribly into FPS, but it's much more enjoyable when playing with, as opposed to against, someone, IMO.

Board Games:

Starship Catan (or something like that) is meant to be played with two people.  It's like the Starfarers of Catan (which, in turn, is like Settlers of Catan), but it's meant for only two.  Make sure you find the one that's meant for two people, though!

My husband and I like to pick up pregenerated decks of Magic: the Gathering cards, too.  We used to play A LOT, but our deck styles were so unevenly matched (he played Blue control and I played Green beatdown) and we're too competitive, so we just pick up the pregens and play with them.

Hope it helps! :D

If you're into the Lovecraftian mythos I'd defintely recommend Arkham horror. In this board game the players' team races against the clock to prevent the release of an ancient horror. Characters, monsters ans old ones are quite varied. Lots of weird encounters and travelling through other dimensions involved.

i will have to throw my hat with borderlands.
Show

me and my roommates had a load of fun with the game. the plot is... dry to say the least (you're a treasure hunter, there is a treasure, go hunt) and it's the NPCs who really drive the game through interaction & dialogue (Marcus Kincaid, the various Claptraps & ) but it's just VERY well made and has the best cell-shading i've seen in a LONG time (just enough to give definition to the textures). i just got the Zombie Island of Dr.Ned DLC (who is totally NOT Dr.Zed from the first game) and it's been incredibly fun, if a bit short on content.
there are a few issues i have with the game:

one, if you get those one or two really ridiculous weapons, the game can become too easy at a few points. Sledge's Shotgun, to use a forced drop as an example, is absolutely crazy as a melee-range weapon i've used it for the longest time as my primary "GET OUT OF MY FACE" weapon. i've also gotten a few... ridiculous... pistols/revolvers. one of said pistols makes VERY quick work out of most large groupings of enemies.

two, is the boss AI. several bosses only "activate" when you're within their area, so they can be sniped or picked off if you stay outside the entrance to their area. this led to funny scenario where i mauled a boss without activating him, then got mauled by the normal enemies who

three, enemies suffer from Zombie VS Door Syndrome: none of these enemies can open doors. while this doesn't affect the game much since most of the door opening is done in "safe" areas, there are a few occasions (and at least one boss fight) that your best option is to close a door while waiting for the gunfire to quiet down, open, unload & close door. repeat. even worse, that one boss fight, he's just too big to fit through the door (he never learned how to crouch a few inches?) so he's kept outside of your "safe zone".

one of my roommate's buddies was over today and said the newest DLC, Mad Moxxie's, was some crazy multiplayer action, though i've yet to try it out.

That catan game is fun and stuff but I got tired of getting screwed over never getting bad dice results. Also doesn't help that when I placed my starting pieces that my friends had already taken the most frequent numbers and all. I haven't played the game in a while but I would hella play it again given the opportunity to. Fun stuff even with me losing and stuff.

Candyland. nuff said.

For fantasy themed goodness, the Baldur's Gate games for the PS2 can probably be rented or purchased for a song.

Diablo II might be an option. Can you play that over a LAN or do you need to use Battle.net? Does Blizzard still support it well since its an old game?

I'll also have to look into these Catan board games.

I used to play Magic with my wife. I should figure out a way to generate seal deck like games from my collection. It gets a little stale when you play with and against the same deck too often (extra so if they don't generate a good game).

The Settlers/Starfarers of Catan are for 3+ people, but there is one made specifically for 2 players.  I'm pretty sure it's Starship Catan, but I don't remember where my game actually is, so just be aware when looking at games.

Well, you could find deck builds here on the boards, or from the Wizards site, and see if you can build them using your collection.  That way, it's a level of separation between you and the decks (and it adds variety).

I hate making decks from a list. I think half the fun of the game is constructing and fine tuning the decks. And recently I start love having my options limited so that "suboptimal" cards become good.

Ideally, it'd be nice to go to sealed deck or booster drafts with my wife, but she says she doesn't want to play with random people. I really can't argue since lots of magic players aren't the nicest people.

If you don't mind ponying up the $100+ Space Hulk is a good 2-player option.

If your wife doesn't enjoy the tuning, then it will probably not be as fun for her if you build the decks yourselves.  If she does, then you can totally set up restrictions for both of you to build towards - like, you can't use creatures with mana cost more than 3, or you have to use two colors, or whatever.

And I can understand not wanting to play with random M:tG players.  I've had my share of bad experiences with them - one actually asked me if I was just there for my BF before I smashed him with my green beatdown deck (and took 2nd place in the tournament).

I've found the Tales games to be pretty sexy multiplayer games that require a lot less investment from the other player. Tales of the Abyss in particular, as it has a character who fights with a giant stuffed cat.

Dreamblade is an amazing game, it's only real problem being that it can only accomodate 2 people at a time, which is actually a benefit/nonissue if there are only 2 people involved anyway.

For Boardgames, I'll second Arkham Horror.  Thats what my wife and I do on the weekends.  She just got another expansion during xmas for it (only 2 left to get now).
