Chris Weidman, a mostly unknown to casual fans until he got the Silva title fight. A lot of fighters were saying that Weidman had the skills to beat Silva. Most other people didn't give him a chance. They figured it would be another typical Silva fight. Weidman proved them wrong. It seems Silva decided to take a page out of the Nick Diaz fight book and talk instead of fighting. He has done this in previous fights. Usually he gets into a fighter's head and knocks them out when they over-extend and fall out of position. Weidman wasn't playing that game and right after Silva pretended to be hurt, Weidman knocked him out with a left hook. You could see his eyes rolling back in his head as he fell. He landed hard and Weidman landed another two punch combo before the referee stoped the fight. It was awesome. The bar where I was exploded with people screaming. There was a table with some Brazilian guys right by me. One of them is an MMA instructor in the area. In the first round when Weidmaan took Silva down with his wrestling, he went for a heel hook. This Brazilian guy starts talking BS saying that it was white-belt stuff. Even before the fight started, this Brazilian guy was booing Weidman. He even shouted a few insults in Portuguese at the TV he was watching. When Weidman knocked Silva out, this guy's jaw dropped. He didn't say anything for about 10 minutes. He looked like he was about to cry. It was awesome! |

| #7Mad_JackJul 07, 2013 1:04:33 | Yup. What happens when you open your mouth during a fight? Your mouth guard falls out. (Often followed by your teeth.) |

| #9homicidal_squirrelJul 07, 2013 1:59:51 | I wonder what Steven Segal is going to say about Silva getting knocked out. |
| #10Mad_JackJul 07, 2013 2:17:31 | "Mumble-mumble-growl (pseudo-mystical mumbo-jumbo) sneer-mumble (fortune cookie quote) growl sneer-mumble-sneer-growl (oblique reference to implied badassery) mumble-mumble..." |
| #11homicidal_squirrelJul 07, 2013 2:26:43 | I don't know. Steven Segal likes to talk. A lot. He also likes to sing. Very badly. Maybe he will write terrible song about it. |
| #12draco1119Jul 07, 2013 2:29:07 | It didn't even look like he got hit that hard. Lucky shot? Glass chin? Don King promoted the fight? |
| #13homicidal_squirrelJul 07, 2013 2:32:31 | Nope. It was a good left hook. The video I posted doesn't give you a good angle of the shot, but it was the only one I could find. Weidman hit Silva right on the button. In the slow-motion reply, you can see Silva's eyes rolling back in his head as he is going down. He was out before he hit the mat. I think hitting the mat woke him up... righ befor Weidman put him out again. If I can find a clip of the slow-motion reply, I'll post it. |
| #14warghoulJul 07, 2013 2:39:48 | I guess in fight taunting and matrix like dodging isnt the way to go. |
| #15homicidal_squirrelJul 07, 2013 2:44:57 | Here is a better angle of the left hook. |
| #16DannyalcatrazJul 07, 2013 3:21:40 | Yeah, that angle makes it much clearer. |
| #17PontiacJul 07, 2013 18:54:07 | ![]() I wonder what Steven Segal is going to say about Silva getting knocked out. |
| #18Mad_JackJul 07, 2013 22:11:33 | It didn't even look like he got hit that hard. Lucky shot? Glass chin? Don King promoted the fight? Knocking somebody out isn't so much about how hard you hit them, but more about the angle - there's just certain ways to pop people that cause them to go lights out. Pop a guy one way and you may bounce his brain off the inside of his skull but he'll keep going, pop him at a slightly different angle and (even if you just clip him) you snap his head around in a way that instantly disrupts his nervous system and he's out before your arm stops swinging... |

Most other people didn't give him a chance. They figured it would be another typical Silva fight. Weidman proved them wrong. I watched the prelims (which were actually all pretty good - er, except for the Leben 'fight') and they had the guys talking about the PPV before it started - sorta like the guys talking about the NFL game before it starts. Anyhoo, they cut Chael's mic after he was done with his comment but he kept mouthing something to the camera as others were talking. It was 'bet on it, put all your money on it' stuff like that about Weidman winning. Heh, gotta love Chael. Anyhoo, I was surprised he KO'd him until I read about what happened and saw the vid. A lot of guys get beat by the Silva mystique and lose before they even get in the cage. In this fight the only one who believed in the Silva mystique was Silva. Weidman couldn't have cared less. Once again, though, the Silva mystique played a huge part in the fight. |

Frankie Edgar put on a pretty good fight. If it had gone on longer than three rounds, I think Edgar would have knocked out Olivera. Bythe third round Edgar was landing some gnarly combinations. He rocked Olivera a few times. Too bad Edgar takes so long to eally get going. Anyhoo, I was surprised he KO'd him until I read about what happened and saw the vid. Silva said during the post-fight press conference that the taunting was part of his plan to get Weidman to stay standing and trade strikes where Silva should have had the edge. |

Speaking of Chael Sonnen, he recently released his demnands for his new contract. My favorite part of the article is the advice he gives regrding building a brand as a fighter. To that question, Sonnen replied, “First thing, when you are asked a question, remember that you are not under oath. I don’t answer questions; I handle questions.” |

Usually you get tentative fighters and that didn't happen. You'd think it did with the Leben fight but I think he was just totally out of shape. Yeah, Weidman seems to never have bought into the Silva mystique. He took Silva down in the first round and got Silva with good shots. Silva said during the post-fight press conference that the taunting was part of his plan to get Weidman to stay standing and trade strikes where Silva should have had the edge. Yep, Weidman just didn't care. I guess he got pissed about the taunting but he kept to his plan until the very end. He said when Silva taunted him then he said 'f-it' and really went after him. The odd thing about Silva's plan is that by taunting with the dropped hands and exposed chin he totally gives up a lot of his advantage on the feet. It's dumb. Wanna keep the fight standing? Train takedown D and get Segall out of your camp. ;) |
| #28zombie_babiesJul 09, 2013 8:35:53 | What happened in the Leben fight? He did his normal come ahead no matter what type of fight but he had no power in anything and was really slow. The other guy didn't seem all that special but Leben seemed especially out of shape. He had a long layoff and changed camps and he was recently suspended for roids or T or something so not doing those drugs may have had something to do with it. Anyhoo, they cut Chael's mic after he was done with his comment but he kept mouthing something to the camera as others were talking. You'd think it did with the Leben fight but I think he was just totally out of shape. Edgar is just a slow starter. If regular fights were five rounds, and champonship fights were seven or more rounds, Edgar would be nearly unbeatable. As for Leban... He said he was in the best shape of his life for this fight. Have you noticed every time someone says that, they are in terrible shape? Yep, Weidman just didn't care. I guess he got pissed about the taunting but he kept to his plan until the very end. He said when Silva taunted him then he said 'f-it' and really went after him. The odd thing about Silva's plan is that by taunting with the dropped hands and exposed chin he totally gives up a lot of his advantage on the feet. It's dumb. Wanna keep the fight standing? Train takedown D and get Segall out of your camp. ;) Yup. Weidman was mentally prepared for that fight. Most people stepping in with Silva beat themselves before the fight even starts. Weidman was very confident before the fight. I didn't read any article where he said he would try his best. he was always saying he was going to win. I think Silva kept his hands low so he could stuff the takedowns. It put him in a better position to do so. Silva's ability to dodge is uncanny. Unfortunately it is only good against an MMA striker. If you notice, most if not all MMA strikers alternate their fist (right-left-right-left), so Silva can roll with the punches to take the power out of them. He turns his face and his body with the punches. MMA guys don't do the boxing thing where boxers throw double jabs from the same side. Weidman basically set Silva up with a right that went for Silva's right side. Silva turned to his left to roll with the strike then turned to his right which would have avoided a strike coming for Silva's right side, but instead Weidman threw that left hook, and Silva was turning into the hook. Silva couldn't avoid that one, and it got him good. |
| #30draco1119Jul 09, 2013 9:27:32 | I'm kinda pissed about the pay scale; Silva got $600K for losing (and would have made another $200K if he won), while Weidman only made $48K for winning - and that INCLUDES his win bonus of $24K. I understand the disparity in base salary, but I think the bonus should have been equal. |
| #31zombie_babiesJul 09, 2013 9:47:25 | Edgar is just a slow starter. If regular fights were five rounds, and champonship fights were seven or more rounds, Edgar would be nearly unbeatable. Leben probably has low test from all the roids. He looked awful. I was excited to see him but he was gassed before the fight started and never threw anything with power. Awful. Yup. Weidman was mentally prepared for that fight. Most people stepping in with Silva beat themselves before the fight even starts. Weidman was very confident before the fight. I didn't read any article where he said he would try his best. he was always saying he was going to win. Yeah, it was a well timed shot. Silva played too much, though, regardless of why he had his hands low. Got better striking? Attack. He never really did. He waited and baited and lost cuz of both. I'm kinda pissed about the pay scale; Silva got $600K for losing (and would have made another $200K if he won), while Weidman only made $48K for winning - and that INCLUDES his win bonus of $24K. I understand the disparity in base salary, but I think the bonus should have been equal. Weidman's contract is standard. The UFC win bonus is always the same as the base fight salary - for most fighters, anyway. It's all part of the overall contract and Weidman's was negotiated long before he got the Silva fight. Silva made so much more because Silva has made the UFC at least tens of millions of dollars. Weidman can't say that. Anyhoo, that's the deal with the bonus. Now Dana may have thrown him some more cash or maybe he got a taste of the PPV buys (Silva did - I guarantee it) but the UFC does not disclose total fighter pay so we'll probably never know. |

I understand the disparity in base salary, but I think the bonus should have been equal. That was actually Weidman's doing. He didn't want to renegotiate is contract before the fight. He said he wanted to prove he was going to be Silva and not just fighting for a paycheck, or something like that. I'm betting now he can get some of those Sonnen benefits. |
| #33draco1119Jul 09, 2013 10:08:11 | @Squirrel: I hope he at least gets GSP's truck for a while! ![]() @ZB: like I said: I understand the disparity in base salary because Silva's a big name (like the Tyson/Douglas fight, for example), I just think the bonus system is borked. I mean, at least give a new champion a $50K "championship bonus" or summat. |
| #34zombie_babiesJul 09, 2013 10:25:29 | @Squirrel: I hope he at least gets GSP's truck for a while! Again, the win bonus structure is negotiated as part of the fighter's UFC contract. The UFC rarely does 1 fight contracts. These guys are on staff. Anyhoo, they could totally add an 'if fighting for chanpionship' bonus escalation clause. And it's possible Dana threw him a few bones, too. Then again, he did sorta make the whole superfight thing kinda less kewls. Er, not like those were actually gonna happen. |
| #35homicidal_squirrelJul 09, 2013 17:22:58 | @Squirrel: I hope he at least gets GSP's truck for a while! Weidman won the knock out of the night bonus, which I think is about $50,000.00, so there's that. Several fighters have also said that Dana some times gives gave them a bit extra for having good fights. I wouldn't be surprised if Weidman broke $100K. @Squirrel: I hope he at least gets GSP's truck for a while! The fight win bonuses are generally the same as what the fighters get paid to fight. If they win, the basically get paid double. Also, according to Dana, Weidman called him when he got the fight apologized to Dana. Weidman told him he was going to ruin all his superfights. |

| #38zombie_babiesJul 11, 2013 7:43:11 | He probably figured out how much money he'd be missin' out on. Oh, and how much money he'd be able to make, too. Welp, when this rematch goes down draco will probably be a lot happier with Weidman's pay. Something tells me he got a li'l bump. |
| #39homicidal_squirrelJul 11, 2013 8:36:05 | Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Weidman will be getting a nice chunk of change in their second fight. He may even get some of that PPV buy payout. I'm just hoping he satys focused and improves his stand up, takedowns, and cardio for the second fight. He did awesome in the first fight, but you know Silva is probably going to go all out offense in the next fight. When Silva comes in with a flurry of strikes, Weidman is going to need to take him down hard, and pound his face in. |
| #40zombie_babiesJul 11, 2013 8:55:04 | Yup. Hopefully Silva finally sees that playing like that can burn you. If he comes out all O and can defend the TD I think anyone but Jon Jones (and some of the HW guys) would be totally boned. When was the last time Silva didn't play with someone? Rich Franklin? Well, we all know how those fights turned out. ![]() Maybe blame it on the lack of competition. He didn't have to fight anyone for a long time. Maybe Weidman fixed Silva, yanno? Anyhoo, Weidman is a dummy if he takes the rematch without a PPV cut. He's got the cards. I mean, he's still not on Silva's level but he is the guy who beat him. People want to see this fight and the buys will be huge. If he refuses to do it without PPV money what can they do? Bounce him and let Silva fight ... who? |
| #41homicidal_squirrelJul 11, 2013 9:13:23 | Yeah, Weidman can basically write his own checks now. Also, Silva has lately been playing with his opponents, but it's mainly with the guys that have a half-way decent ground game. Franklin was up for the striking game. He couldn't do anything when Silva got him with the Thai-clinch. If he tried that with Weidmanor Sonnen, he would have been taken down. Strong wrestlers that get close, get the takedown. Silva didn't appear to like the punches to the face and head he took from Weidman. Actually, in his first fight with Sonnen, Silva got rocked by Sonen. The rest of the fight was spent on the ground. Fortunately for Silva, Sonnen is a real nice guy and likes giving up when he is just about to win. I don't think Weidman is that nice of a guy. Then there is the psychological aspect you have to look at. Weidman walked into that fight saying he was going to win. Their second fight isn't going to be any different for Weidman. He may be a bit more confident, but I don't think he will be overconfident and get in trouble because of it. He seems like a smart, don to earth guy. Silva on te other hand knows he can't go to the ground with Weidman because Weidman is a much better wrestler. After the first fight, Silva also knows that Weidman will knock him out if he gets the chance. The question is, will Silva be able to go in there and have a good fight - win, lose, or draw? Or will Silva Machida the fight and get gun-shy to throw strikes and get in close and go go with a decision loss? |
| #42zombie_babiesJul 11, 2013 9:28:34 | I think we haven't seen Anderson Silva in a long time cuz he never felt like he had to show up. Now I think he may feel he does. It could be an epic beatdown or he could get tossed and pounded out. Weidman is the wrong kinda dood for Silva but Silva is still really, really good. I wonder if Weidman will shoot more the second time around. Just get that danger out of the way right off. Silva on his feet and on his game is nothing to play with. |
| #43homicidal_squirrelJul 11, 2013 21:54:31 | I think we haven't seen Anderson Silva in a long time cuz he never felt like he had to show up. You know, I see that same sentiment being expressed on many of the MMA sites by fans, but I think he showe up. His style has always been one that relies on dodging and movement. He relies on the Silva legend to defeat his opponents even before he gets in the octogon. And judging from the picture of the weigh-ins, Silva was going full-out intimidation. But as I said before, Weidman wasn't buying into it. He came in with the right mind-set. He saw himself winning the fight, and he went out there and won it. He kept his composure in a situation where others before him have lost it. In an interview Forrest says that he tried to punch Silva, and Silva made him feel embarrassed for even trying to punch him. Silva basically broke Forrest mentally. He took the fight out of him. That didn't happe with Silva. He has been doing the same thing for a long time. And it isn't because he didn't need to show up and fight. The guys he fought at LHW were guys that had decent wrestling. Forrest has, if I remember correctly, a black belt in BJJ. These were guys that were bigger than Silva. They had a good ground game. Silva just took them out of that ground game mentality. But again, Weidman just didn't buy into it. Even when he missed, he kept his composure. Now I think he may feel he does. It could be an epic beatdown or he could get tossed and pounded out. Weidman is the wrong kinda dood for Silva but Silva is still really, really good. I wonder if Weidman will shoot more the second time around. Just get that danger out of the way right off. Maybe I'm jumping on the Weidman bandwagon, but I think Weidman can keep the belt in the rematch. Silva is still a very dangerous fighter. He is still propably the top striker, at least at MW. Still, you have to wonder how much a knockout is going to affect him. He went into the second Sonen fight and angry fighter and got the second round TKO win, but Sonnen still took him down and kept him down the first round. Had Silva not grabbe Sonnen's shorts, he would have gone down the second round as well, I think. I'm willing to be that for the rematch, Silva won't get away with grabbing Weidman's shorts and greasing up before the fight start. And yeah, Weidman is a bad match-up for Silva, and Silva knows it. I mean, he really knows it now. He got dominated the first round, and KTFO the second round. I don't think Silva is going to rely on movement to dodge Weidman's strikes. Still, if Silva stays in the pocket and strikes with Weidman, Silva is going to be in danger of getting taken down and getting pounded again. To be honest, I think that's why Silva stays away from wrestlers and tries to just dodge their strikes. Most wrestlers have one good strong punch they can take people down with. Look at Johny Hendrix. That guy has a nasty left (or is it right?). It's one punch power. However, I doubt you are going to say that Hendrix has even mid-level striking. He can wing out a hell of a punch and take people out. Same for Dan Henderson and the H-bomb. He throws that constly. He misses most of the time. When he does catch someone, it usually puts them out. But when he went against Silva, Silva wasn't afraid of Henderson's striking. Henderson took him down, and fortunately for Silva, his BJJ is good enough. Here is the other thing. When Silva fights strikers, he stands sideways. He tries to make himself a smaller target. When he fights wrestlers, he has to square off, so he can defend the double-leg takedown. This means that Silva has to rely on head and body movement to dodge most strikes. He also has his hands low in case his opponent shoots for the takedown. It allows him to stuff it faster. One of the things that made Silva so effective against Franklin was the Thai-clinch. He put both hands behind Franklin's head and controlled his body movement. He could try that with Weidman, or any other wrestler, but it would just get him taken down much faster. Silva on his feet and on his game is nothing to play with. I don't think Weidman would go in and play ith him. Weidman seems to have the right mind-set to defeat Silva. Weidman is all busines in there. At least he looked it that night. In a post-fight interview Weidman said that Silva's taunting got him angry and he just wanted to hit Silva, but if you watch the fight, you'll see that Weidman stays pretty calm and composed the entire time. |

| #46zombie_babiesJul 12, 2013 9:51:05 | ![]() Anyhoo, when I saw the highlights the first thing I thought was that Silva may have lost a step. Weidman's no boxer but Silva couldn't stay away from him. It's probably more like what you say, though - he just wasn't afraid to stand and punch with the guy. Silva needs a new gameplan to beat Weidman. I just wonder if even that would be enough or if he could implement one at this point. |
| #47homicidal_squirrelJul 12, 2013 15:17:06 | Anyhoo, when I saw the highlights the first thing I thought was that Silva may have lost a step. Silva may have lost a step. The thing is, he is just that much better than the other guys ah MW that even when he loses a step, he is still far better than everyone else. Silva is getting up there in years. He is 38 now. His body isn't going to be able to do te same things he was able to do when he was younger. Look at Roy Jones Jr. He is 44 now, but he got beat for the first time when he was about 34-35. And face it, s good as Silva is at dodging strikes, he doesn't have the speed that Roy had. Even if you compare the two of them at their prime. Roy had an amazing ability to shoulder roll, and duck, and sway. Silva's ablity to do the same wasn't even close. He just appeared Superman like because everyone else at MW was worse at it. Age is catching up to Silva the same it caught up to Roy, the same it caught up to Emilianenko, the same it caught up with Crocop, the same it caught up with Chuck Liddell. I don't know if I really want to see Silva continue to fight for the belt. Part of me doesn't want to see Silva fight because he might be able to beat Weidman, but really, I don't want to see Silva go out through one of those terrible downward spirals that a lot of fighters go through. People like to complain about Emilianenko. A lot of people will say that his record was full of cans, or fighters that weren't in his leage, but the guy was beating guys that ere far bigger than him. He submitted some top wrestlers in his day. He beat some of te best guys that he had available. To see him go out the way he did was terrible. His last fight was against Pedro Rizzo. Why i Rizzo still fighting? He used to be pretty damn good. Now he is just a paid punching bag with a name for up-and-comers to beat so they can get some street cred. It's sad to see fighters go out like that. I'd rather see Silva retire. I mean, what's he going to do? Take Weidman on and more than likely lose again? Weidman looks like he has Silva's number. Did you see how much better than Sonnen Weidman's ground-n-pound was? He put his fist right into Silva's head and you could tell Silva didn't like it at all. If Silva loses again to Weidman, he will have to take on someone else to get another title shot. As much as Dana likes Silva,I don't see him giving Silva a second rematch if Silva loses the second fight. Weidman's no boxer but Silva couldn't stay away from him. It's probably more like what you say, though - he just wasn't afraid to stand and punch with the guy. Silva needs a new gameplan to beat Weidman. Yeah, Weidman wasn't afraid of fighting Silva. He wasn't afraid of Silva's striking and knew he would take some hits going in, but it didn't look like Silva managed to hurt Weidman at all. Also, I think Weidman had a much better figh plan than Silva thought he would. That combination that ended the fight was great. He threw a left, a right, a reverse right, and a left hook. That reverse right threw Silva's dodging pttern offand he never saw that left hook. Then Weidman bounced Silva's head off the canvas. i.minus.com/ibpTAYvgSlVH1S.gif I just wonder if even that would be enough or if he could implement one at this point. I don't know. Back when Shogun and Machida had their rematch, Shogun said in an interview that he knew what he needed to do to beat Machida, and that it wasn't going to be easy for Machida to change his style. The same may be true of Silva. He has a certain style. It's going to be hard for him to change it enough. I mean, think about it; Silva is used to standing sideways when going full on striking. That makes it easier for a wrestler who gets a hold of Silva to take him down. Silva has to square his hips and have his hands low enough to stuff the takedown. Weidman has already shown that he can take Silva down and hurt him on the ground. Weidman has also shown that having your hands down against him is a terrible idea. Silva needs to do something drastic. Maybe Silva can use his BJJ to submit Weidman, but that is very dangrous against a guy like Weidman. I'm betting Weidman wins the second fight by UD. Silva will be a lot more cautious, and he might Machida the fight. It'll be long, boring, and end in his second defeat in a row to the same guy. |

I think he could beat Weidman cuz he's still Silva but the rematch would likely play out differently. You're right, though. He loses this and he's done with the title for a while. Hmm ... perfect scenario: Silva loses the rematch. Bisping gets the shot at Weidman. Bisping throws a bomb and connects with Weidman's chin. Weidman laughs so hard he falls down and passes out from lack of oxygen. Bisping gets the title. Silva gets the first shot. Perfect. ![]() |

Still, I don't see him being able to adjust enough to beat Weidman like most people thought he would do the first time. I'm thinking Weidman wins by UD in the rematch. I'm curious how much that knockout affected Silva and his willingness to get into a striking war. |
| #50Robin_HoodlumJul 12, 2013 17:03:41 | Everytime I look at the video HS posted I laugh so bad I almost wet myself. I love the look on Silvas face as he is dancing and then the way Weidman looks at the viewer. That's gotta be one of the funniest things I have seen in quite some time. ![]() |

I mean, he thought he was as unstoppable as everyone said he was. This has to have him thinkin' something different. Stylistically he may be boned. It's just a bad matchup. Welp, if he loses the rematch the 185 division will get interesting again and that's a plus. And who knows, maybe Silva will decide to move up to 205 and make a run at Jones. |

I don't think Weidman will knock him out again, but I think Weidman will win by UD. |
| #53zombie_babiesJul 15, 2013 9:56:56 | Certainly sounds plausible. Weidman will need to keep it inside, though. Silva won't wanna kick much cuz of the takedowns but if you give him enough room he may Segal you in your brainbox. |
