It just appears they are saying "don't take pictures, we can discipline our idiot drivers without them and at best you'll just get into arguments with the driver, which is even more dangerous then them texting".

I don't really see the issue... once you read past the headline into the actual article, anyway. It's a very bad title.

I agree with Pluisjen......for once.

If you actually read the article, they basically say don't cross the line to take take photos and don't escalate the situation. Just report the person with or without a photo or ask them to stop messing around on the phone.

I agree I'd be pissed if someone kept taking my picture.

And I'd be pretty pissed if you got me injured cuz you were texting while driving.  Guess which one is worse.

At any rate, someone pegged it in the comments.  No pic = 'I didn't do it'.  I don't care if they go through the process of getting phone records (requires legal action - you can't just call up and ask), there's still plausible deniability.  'I was texting?  I don't see how, I left my phone at home in case my son needed it.  He was sick and I wanted him to be able to get in touch with his mother.'  Duh.  Much harder to refute the pic.

Short response: tough

Most TTC drivers are complete holes. Frak, I've seen one of them reading the damned newspaper while driving! I say take as many pictures as you need to catch these overpaid wankers doing all the wrong things they do.

If I had a camera phone back when I was taking the bus, I would have sent a few pictures in to the local news stations. Some of the bus drivers down here are frightening. I've seen some texting or talking on the phone while running lightsa nd changing lanes.

“cameras in the face of operators can escalate a situation that doesn’t need to be escalated.”

Based on the picture from the article I would say that the camera was nowhere even close to being considered "in the face of the operator."

I say that if you see the drivers doing something dangerous then take a picture!  Just do it like the person did from the aforementioned picture:  From behind and to the side!  Also, do not use a flash.

From the article:
However, he said he has no problems with people snapping pictures of drivers who are texting while driving.

“It’s completely justifiable,” he said as long as patrons don’t cross the line and try to film drivers hoping to catch them in the act.

So taking out your phone and snapping a picture when a driver misbehaves is acceptable (if not their preferred method), but filming the drivers just in case they screw up isn't. Sounds fair to me.
