#1 midnitepoison Jan 20, 2009 12:37:58	so, Im sure most people have heard the stereotype that gamers play only in their mother's basement, eat cheetos until their fingers are permanently orange, and get sugar high off of soda. But in reality, how close do you fall into this category? I'll admit to eating Cheesy chips and drinking soda. I dont play in the basement though, because the closest thing I have to that is my bomb shelter, (I live in Israel) and gaming in there would just be.....creepy
#2 baneofelves Jan 20, 2009 12:40:34	Hmm. I play at my friends house, in his living room. He doesn't live with his parents, since he's like 30ish. I don't drink too much soda, since I'm trying to lose weight. Once in a while I'll have cheetos, but it's not something I have very often. So I don't think I fit the stereotype.
#3 dirtyfrank Jan 20, 2009 12:43:00	I don't have a basement or bomb shelter. My group does play at a friends house (it's actually his mom's). We often have soda. Someone will usually get something like taco bell. I don't think my group eats chips at game at all. We a run a while back where we had pizza at the table quite a bit.

Other than that... the only time I gamed in my parents house at all was when I lived there (I moved out when I was 17 (no I wasn't all delinquent or anything, I just got married at a very young age)), and they didn't have a basement, so instead I used a huge extra bedroom on the second floor which had been converted into a sort of living room for me. I like cheetos, but I hardly ever eat them... to messy. I have an active social life, am in good shape, don't wear glasses, and only have a neckbeard when I stay home for 3 weeks with nowhere to go and I'm being lazy (so not that often). So yeah, not very stereotypical... I do have all the geek hobbies though. Video gaming, comic books, anime, pnp rpgs... but I also have a lot of non geek hobbies as well... Mostly, I just have a lot of hobbies. EDIT: Playing a modern post-apocalyptic game in a bomb shelter would be awesome.

#9 crimson_lancer Jan 20, 2009 12:57:15	All of the geeky hobbies/fetishes, not a one of the negative stereotypes. I've had more girlfriends than most of the popular people I know, do Martial Arts twice a week, and look damn good. ;)
#10 Cpt_Micha Jan 20, 2009 12:57:41	I don't really fit it, I still live with my folks but that's partly because of misfortune than desire. No basement gaming going on either. I don't eat cheetos and try to stay away from drinking too much soda. I've got plenty of geeky hobbies, though I am in good shape. (And since most geeky hobbies by nature are guess what social. I have a good social life)

#13 zombie_babies Jan 20, 2009 13:03:23	We do play in a basement. :D No chips or Mt Dew, though. Some of the guys bring fast food and have that as their lunch. I bring an Arizona Green Tea with Ginseng/Honey and the occasional candy bar (Heath lately). We don't munch a whole lot and when we do it's usually something like Cashews or smokies or something. Beyond the basement, I don't think we really fit any of the sterotypes. Well, I know I don't. :D

Does it sting less if the reason is so I can pay them rent instead of some greasy faced land lord so they can afford to provide for my niece and nephew who live with us? Plus, I've raised my niece since she was 1 and she's like a daughter to me. - OHhhh.. and I drink a lot of soda, AND I'm fat. Wow.. damn.. gotta work on breaking down these stereotypes! LOL - Of course, I game with a biochemist, a biologist, an insurance salewoman, and a chemist... who have their own homes/apartments (Okay, one lives with her parents on 100 Acres. Why leave, I say.) - I don't like Cheetos though.. I'm a pretzel guy.
#16 aardwolf Jan 20, 2009 13:04:48	Well my group and I play in my basement, I own my own house though, not my parents, and the room is about 700 square foot gamer heaven with couches gaming tables and a fridge ( my wife spoils me ) I aspire to be a fatbeard when I retire and am happily teaching my son the gamer hobby :D neither of us like cheesy chip types..more a BBQ and sour cream n onion family :D..I am looking forward to getting back there in a year :D
#17 Enlightened1 Jan 20, 2009 20:36:14	Stereotype: overweight, balding, bearded We do play in a basement, either my friends' or my brother's - but both are fully finished basements, really a lower floor of the house rather than simple basements Non-stereotype: Mother doesn't even *have* a basement, and haven't lived with her since leaving for college Drink lots of soda, but it's all diet - regular tastes all syrupy to me any more Snack foods too much, but I don't like ones that make my fingers stained or greasy; gimme cookies or pretzels, or (some kinds of) chips, not cheetos

As to sterotypes: Visually and upon meeting me, I seem more likley to fit the "belltower w/ rifle" angry and withdrawn stereo type. As for the whole mom basement thing, no. Play at a friends house at his dineing room table (It's a really nice table. It's got these randombly sized shale tiles that sit in a metal frame.) Or ocasionally in a spare bedroom in my house. Love me my soda though. I like chetos, but rarely eat them. Pretzles are always a big hit though.

QFT! The same could probably be said for a missile silo, one of our group members was in the military and he said he played sitting next to a missile back in the 80s.

Big ass book shelves, all 3 shelves stuffed full, mostly WotC products, Shadowrun, some Vampire, 3 stacks of minis (hand-painted yo!), a Hefty bag of dice, maps & cut acetates, etc. A zillion peripherals, etc., all centralized around the "hub" (gaming table). Back in the day: (grade school/high school), yeah, mom's, but even then pastor mom (no, really) encouraged us to play (that meant we weren't "out" raising Hell) rather than slander D&D. Friends loved it; plenty of food, cable, ample parking, big ass table, and of course, my budding game stax.
#23 Shiftkitty Jan 21, 2009 14:42:46	We used to play at a friend's house (his mom was usually off getting drunk), but after moving back to California it went into the basement* where Doritos and Pepsi were the common fare with a huge ol' bag of M&Ms on hand. When I got my own apartment it moved to the kitchen and snacks were whatever I had in the fridge at the time. In the summer time one of the guys would slap some ribs or burgers on the BBQ and we'd game on the patio. Now I'm in a house (a rental, ugh!) and gaming goes on mostly in the kitchen, but sometimes we ransack the living room. We have graduated from Pepsi to Bacardi as well. *This was a totally cool dug-out basement with bare wood supports, a dirt floor with pallets on it, a battered up card table and makeshift chairs. No fancy lighting, we'd rigged a lightbulb to hang from the center. We made a stereo out of some old junk we'd found, had the houserules stabbed into one of the supports with an old Ka-Bar combat knife. It was sort of "Rambo Meets the Sex Pistols".
