Can we vote to ban a member?

I'm not going to name anyone here, but can't we have an infraction system where a repeated offender would eventually get their IP banned? It seems to me that someone/ some persons create outrageous arguments simply for the sake of arguing.

Nope.

This is a corporate-owned forum.  It is, essentially, a dictatorship.  We the people have zero power.

It is a power too great to be in the hands of the posters.

People are way too dumb for a democracy like that. But if you don't like users, you can always report them. The ORCs will ban anyone that's really doing something wrong.

Yup.  Plus aren't there potentially sticky issues with IP bans?  Like people posting from different machines or, worse, from public machines.  I dunno.  All I know is we'll never be allowed to do that cuz it will be abused.  Not maybe, most assuredly.  With the stalking/harassment I and some others I know have experienced, I just can't advocate allowing posters here that sort of power.

IP bans keep out various people you didn't want to ban and nobody that you did want to ban. They're a piece of cake to evade for anyone who really wants to evade them. Welcome to the internet, where there's no way to keep the trolls out.

The downside to anonimity Wink

There is, it's called the Report function. If someone is disruptive then report them. If it happens enough they will get banned. If they return and continue to cause trouble they can get an IP ban.

The other option is the Ignore function. Just turn off anyone you don't want to deal with. If everyone dislikes someone so much they all do it the net result is essentially the same, though there is nothing stopping them making a new account. They might even call it "Son of _____" or something, just to rub your nose in it.

And there's always the caveat that if such a system existed, it could be used on you. Imagine how disruptive a bloc of jerks could be by vote banning people simply because they have however many votes it would take to kick them.
#11

Pennarin

Nov 21, 2010 12:05:18
The banning process works on banning the username, and perhaps (I'm not sure on this) the original IP used. So the process is a powerful tool for control only because people don't like losing their usernames. If the guy is attached to it, plus all that comes with it - prize icons, numbers of posts, date joined - then he'll cool down rather than lose his username and start from scratch.

I just find it fascinating that when some people, but not all, see someone saying stuff they do not like, they jump on the censorship wagon pretty fast. Usually these are people who cannot debate in a respectful way.

Speaking solely for myself...
It's not so much what you say as it is the manner in which you say it...

Wait...

No.
It is what you say...

And you think you are the only one that disagrees with me?!

Either way...

Correct.  I do not.  It was surgically removed at birth.  They were trying to cut the umbilical cord, and instead severed my sense of humor.  While they were able to cut the cord on the second try, there was nothing they could do to reattach my sense of humor.

And so I am doomed to live the life of a humorless man.  I even have a costume.  It involves a turtleneck and a serious demeanor.

Edit: stupid cold fingers aren't cooperating with me typing right now.
