I'm fairly new to 'pen and paper' D&D, I get some of the mechanics since I've played Neverwinter Nights avidly for a few years. Although, I never did quite grasp everything the game had to offer in some cases, but I get the idea ... I'm having to DM for some family members, a friend and me 'cause we wanna play, buuuuut, I'm abit intimidated, and think maybe it would be easier to get the barrings down online and work that out before moving onto real life, or perhaps this is the wrong method ...

I'd say that the best way to start is with a low-level premade adventure. If you are starting in 3e there is starter kit, but I'm not sure about 4e. Going right in to playing online is probably a bad idea as you will be playing with more experienced people who may not appreciate the game being slowed down by inexperienced players. Good luck starting your game.

Force your friends to play with you in real life!

And if you want to roleplay a bit there's always my Edition War thread.

We -did- do a game, but I didn't have anything prepared, so I winged it, and it was horrible ... the adventure consisted-- well since I asked for a theme to start out, my aunt picked a jungle theme, so I winged it from there, I chose one of the characters as to be a character lost in the woods, and had the other two playering at the time as the search party since the woods weren't that dangerious, and had them go and find her ... They found her but were attacked by a dire rat-- Anyways, they defeat it, get diseased by a mysterious disease out in the middle of the jungle, knowing that there is a small tribal village pay visit to it in search for a cure for their mysterious ailment, go through alot of moral filled decisions in which sometimes I felt iffy-- infact, in the end they savagely beating the witch doctor who was forcing them to do some unmoralistic things-- such as taking the villages only chicken for his own devices, eventually after the players intimidated him settling with a wild kobold ... Buuuut, I -could- find ways of netting storyline, ect. ect. into it ...

The characters are: an Eladrin Warlord (My aunt's char), a Half-Elven Wizard (Mum's), and a Dwarven Paladin (Step-dad). Depending on availability I might make up excuses from time to time as to why the character is gone ... Also to include more I can find reasons, I was thinking for the next one to introduce my PC character ... he'll simply be an escort but might accompany the group later on ... Of course I have more people wanting to play that weren't available, I can find reasonable ways to twist them into the story as well ...

As for planning ahead to the next story, I was thinking since it was her brother (originally her dad, but I thought that wasn't going to work, Warlords work in their family I guess), the brother thinks his baby sister is too weak and forces them to head back to the large city since it's safer there ...

But the major faults were my delivery, nothing prepared, and fluidity of the entirity of the game. I had to flip around several times to make sure everything was up to smuck because I didn't know the HP of the enemy, and I didn't knwo what this skill did, and that skill did-- My Aunt bought a few notecards that shes going to put her stuff down on ... so that'll help out her-- Oh and we're all sharing the same Player Hand Book so that's irksome as well .. XD I'm poor sadly, and so is my family, soooo ... yeah ... I chucked a shiny penny into this and I don't want it to be ruined on a bad run ... Maybe I can do a session with my cousin and best friend ...

OH, and is it cool to DM and play as a 'player'. I guess technically my character would be a 'NPC' ... but ah well ... INFACT, I was thinking of somehow making him a great/main villian down the line .... Betrayel and the what not ... good fun, good fun.
