Various breeds do. Most rat-dogs all look the same, as do many other "pure-breed" dogs. Also keep in mind dogs are specifically bred in certain directions, whereas humans just mingle amongst themselves (unless racist bastards).

I can certainly see it reducing racial colors over time (which arguably is a good thing, though).

Yeah, dogs were selectively bred to be different.  They were supposed to be this way.  I mean, a lab serves a very different function than a daschund and they're very different looking animals.  Cuz, you know, we made them that way.  Through selective breeding.  As humans are moving (thankfully) further away from selective breeding and our planet 'shrinks' thanks to the wonders of technology, the case is hardly the same.  While we'll never all look the same, we certainly should grow to look more similar.

Also, the article isn't about people breeding into exact-sameness.  It's about which 'type' of person is currently the most common.  A Han Chinese man happens to be that 'type' and the picture is a composite image of many, many of them.  It's a neat pic for effect, not some sort of declaration.

Aside from the fact that humans are natural, there wasn't a whole lot natural about the selection process.  We bred labs to retrieve and we bred daschunds to take the fight down the weasel hole.  We chose the best of the best to carry the line.  It's not quite the same thing, IMO.

Besides, we've done all we can to stifle natural selection as far as we're concerned anyway.

First, I want to say that my computer has recently had trouble opening links on this board and so sometimes, I can't read what is linked.

Second, I have a question. Is it racist for a person of a certain race not to find members of other races sexually attractive?

I don't have a problem with people having sex with anyone they wish to, but I just don't find the other races (I'm white) sexually attractive. I mean, I can see that they are pretty but just not someone I want to lay down with.

It's not like I discount them because of their race, it just doesn't attract me but again I'm not against other people having sex, marrying, or what have you with anyone they choose to.

So again, am I racist? Or do I have to sleep with another race in order to prove that I'm not racist?

You've never seen a non-white girl you would get down with?  Never ever?  Never ever ever?  Man, open your mind, dood.  Your wang will appreciate it.

To me, that stuff don't matter.  If they're hot they're hot.  Skin tone, facial structure, height, weight, eye color - whatever - just doesn't matter when lookin' at the whole person.  It just doesn't.  I find I tend to be attracted to certain types (I like dark hair, for example) but I can honestly say I've been attracted to women of all skin tones.  Hell, I can't help it. ;)

As far as whether or not it's racist, all I'll say is 'that depends'.  I really don't wanna get more into it than that but I will say I've certainly not formed an opinion of you either way based on this brief discussion.

Racism should not be confused with personal physical preference.  But if you need some inspiration...  Zoe Saldana.  Kandyse McClure.  Halle Berry.

Doesn't have to be a "racist bastard".  It's just human nature.  Like attracts like... all sorts of studies on this.  Yes, there are exceptions, but at least today, they are the unusual.

How much of this is cultural human nature and how much of it is biological human nature... eh.  That's out of my depth.

Strangely, though, the more options you give people (particularly with internet dating and such) the more you find that people find someone that more closely matches their own appearances.  But then you also have where if the person is too close, attraction drops to almost nothing (in most people) as an incest-avoidance thing (has to do with neurochemicals and the nose, if I recall correctly).

... I guess what I'm trying to say here is that the laws of human attraction are weird and complicated and that, at least in modern American society, people tend to stick to breeding within their tribe then breeding outside of their tribe.  As cultural barriers to interracial pairings this might change, but how much it will change we don't know.

That said, I think the article was talking more just about populations then anything else.

LOL, I was going to use Halle Berry as an example. Yeah, I think she's extremely good lookin' but it's kind of like a painting that I can appreciate for its beauty but not want to go home and rub one out to.

Thanks, I was starting to get worried that my mind is not open enough. She is pretty frickin' hawt though.

The original National Geographic article just noted that China is the biggest country on Earth, so naturally someone Chinese would be the world's "most typical" person. That's hardly reason to say the Chinese are "taking over", even in jest, because we always knew China was big.

You've never seen a non-white girl you would get down with?

There are lots of lovely ladies of all races and colors.

However, what a woman of any race wants and deserves is respect. She looks for a man who is serious about her, someone who really cares.

This is why I wouldn't date a woman of another race who I didn't know well beforehand.

Because being of another race doesn't affect a woman's attractiveness to... embrace. But it does affect how much most men of any given race would find her attractive as the mother of their children. If a white man marries a black woman, their kids won't be white - and so they'll face serious obstacles and problems in their lives that he won't know how to help them deal with.

Given that, a woman of color would rightly be more suspicious of a white man than a man of her own color for being a trifler without honorable intentions.

But this only applies to casual dating. Just as a woman of another color can be attractive, because she is a human being, she can be the one you love. So if it should happen that I had become well acquainted with a woman of another color over a long period of working together or something like that, then of course it's possible that things could proceed from there.

Yeah, that's a little more thought than I ever put into it.  It's a simple 'am I attracted to this person' situation.  When you meet someone, you aren't about to embark on a life long love affair.  There's no need to complicate matters with what ifs when there's no what to if.  Enjoy the moment, deal with whatever comes when it does.  You can't plan happiness.  All you can do is recognize it when it happens.

By the way, if 'they'll face serious obstacles and problems in their lives that he won't know how to help them deal with' is reason enough to consider not having children with someone, you shouldn't consider having kids period.  You're a man.  You may have a daughter.  How will you deal with those uniquely female troubles?  The physical stuff, the different school dynamic, etc?  So, to me, this is hardly a cause for concern.  As troubles come, you handle them.  If you can't, you seek help.  Otherwise known as 'how to live life'.

No more than it's sexist to not find members of the other/same sex sexually attractive.

Also, I second/third the comment that the example with dogs is flawed due to them being bred specifically to be different.

Only slightly.  One is the product of centuries of artificial selection, whereas the other is due to 200,000 years of natural selection and geographic reproductive isolation.

Only slightly.  One is the product of centuries of artificial selection, whereas the other is due to 200,000 years of natural selection and geographic reproductive isolation.

I know that, the point is that different breeds of dogs have often only been allowed to breed between themselves, mimicking natural selection and genetic drift. If they were to run free between each other and mate freely, they would start looking more like each other with each generation, not less as is the case now (also, I think the breeding of dogs go back at least a millennia).

The reasons this hasn't happened to humans yet is partly isolation and partly that they tend to prefer mating with someone similar to them. But remove the isolation and have people of different ethnicities live in the same area, and the number of hybrids increases rapidly (I only have to look at the difference between the US and my own country to see that). Not as fast as some people predicted, since there's still preference, but it will happen. And it's not the catastrophe some people make it out to be.

I don't know so much.  If we keep up the dog breeding, there'll be a point when they're so genetically different, that they'll no longer be able to interbreed.  There are also mechanical zygotic barriers (tab A doesn't fit into slot B, if you catch my drift).  As far as the genetics, I don't know how long that'll take, but you already have breeds that mechanically can't interbreed.  However, there is also Dollo's law, which states that they won't revert back.  I think at this point that there are so many breeds, that it would be a hopelessly long time before they would actually begin to look alike.  However, mating preferences might also form between them to where breeding back into a single hybrid organism might not happen across the board.

The reasons this hasn't happened to humans yet is partly isolation and partly that they tend to prefer mating with someone similar to them.

Well, that's pretty common in nature actually.  Humans aren't the only organisms that do it.  It's how sympatric speciation takes place.  Usually, the most speciation takes place when there are geographic barriers between a sub-population and a parent population (allopatric speciation).  However, on occassion, reproductive isolation occurs within the parent population, due to mating preference.  It's harder to notice at first, but it happens.

But remove the isolation and have people of different ethnicities live in the same area, and the number of hybrids increases rapidly

Well, just like with the dogs, there's no guarantee that would happen, for the same reason.  Sure, some people will interbreed with people of different ethnicities, but it won't be across the board, unless a mating preference is formed for the hybrids.

You are forgetting all of the invesments they are making in Africa.

No I'm not.
In order to protect their interests in Africa, they need a capable Navy and bases. The most likely place to project naval power right now, and to build bases, is in the Pacific, near China itself... and to a lesser extent, the Indian Ocean. Also, China has a lot of unfinished business in Asia with Taiwan, as well as making claims on islands also claimed by others like Japan and Russia. China has to become a regional power before it can really project its power further abroad (in Africa).
But let's not forget India. India now considers China to be their main adversary, even before Pakistan. India and China have issues with the border between their countries in the Himilayas, and have even fought wars over it... with the Indians getting beat the last time. One of the reasons that India is striving to build a capable Navy is becasue of Chinese attempts to do so and because more Chinese ships are being seen in the Indian Ocean.

Others have already brought up the objectections I would regarding everyone looking alike in the future, and apart from my objection with the terms artifical selection and natural selection, the only thing I have to add is that if you really want to make everyone look alike in the future it would require removing a lot of the genetic variation that currently exists. If China nukes the rest of the world that might be a significant step towards this goal.

Yes, it is always a possibility.
Do your own research and you will see that Indias military build up is a direct result of Chinas military build up. Also, you will see that they have border squabbles and have fought over it before.

Nah, I don't think so. It's just a shame that you care so much about looks that it hampers your ability to love. If someone would have trouble falling in love with someone because of their looks, that'd just be a shame. But still, their choice ultimately.

But that's a sidepoint, obviously! I don't think you're racist for not finding people with certain looks not sexually attractive. As Erato said; just like you're not sexist for not finding people of your own gender attractive.

#28

capitan_estaban

Mar 09, 2011 8:00:34
It isn't a matter of one being more dominate than another, it is a matter of there being the possibility of variation. The simpliest example I could give you is that "ear attachedness" is the responsibility of a single allele (or perhaps not). Lets say attached earlobes are recessive. So, you have 4 possible varriations depending upon your parents, (3 of which will mean you have unattached earlobes).

RR - unattached
Rr - unattached
rR - unattached
rr - attached

If you want to eliminiate the variation in the species, you need to remove some genes from the pool of all possible breeders. This means killing off 3/4ths of the population that has the gene you care about. Either all the recessive genes (Rr, rR, rr), or all the dominate genes (RR, Rr, rR). It doesn't matter which is more dominate, it matters that a variation exists.

I wouldn't presume they would revert back, as there are obviously traits have been bred in many breeds of dogs that weren't common in the ur-dogs, so to speak. But apart from the races that can't mate, they would probably start looking more alike if they had freedom to mate.

Well, just like with the dogs, there's no guarantee that would happen, for the same reason.  Sure, some people will interbreed with people of different ethnicities, but it won't be across the board, unless a mating preference is formed for the hybrids.

It's already happening. There are a lot more hybrids in, say, the USA than in countries that aren't multi-ethnic. The question is whether it would stabilise over time, with hybrids mating with each other to create a new distinct ethnicity, or mating with the ethnic group they have most in common with genetically until their offspring is no longer distinguishable from that ethnicity, combined with fewer inter-racial marriages.

Did you keep in mind that Alcohol is one of the deadliest drugs currently available? Tongue out If you're using that as a baseline between "too dangerous" and "not very dangerous" you're going to have to allow a lot.

(Of course maybe you would want a lot to be allowed, in which case fair game, but many people consider alcohol to be on the "harmless" list, where it does not belong)

[...] whereas humans just mingle amongst themselves (unless racist bastards).

But hey! I'm a right-wing conservative, what do I know?

Nah, I don't think so. It's just a shame that you care so much about looks that it hampers your ability to love. If someone would have trouble falling in love with someone because of their looks, that'd just be a shame. But still, their choice ultimately.

But that's a sidepoint, obviously! I don't think you're racist for not finding people with certain looks not sexually attractive. As Erato said; just like you're not sexist for not finding people of your own gender attractive.

#68

capitan_estaban
